To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, DAVID W. Bnoons, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding in New York city, county and State of New York, have invented an Improve# ment in Tie-Clips, of which the 4following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like The present invention relates to an im# provement in tie'clips for use in concrete construction, the objectl being to provide-a clip having wider 'adaptability than those heretofore in use, andone which is easily and economically manufactured on account of its simplicity-of construction,
' One embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the drawings Whiclt accompany this specification in which,
Figure'l is al vievs7 in perspective, Fig.`2, a
similar viewshowing the clip applied to contiguous bars, and Figs. 3 and t are views corresponding toV the above and illustrating a modified form. i
The clip shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a strip .of wire bent lto .form cooperating hook portions 1' and 2 which are adapted to engage a pair of contiguous members 3 and 4, such as structural bars for concrete. As
"the clip is applied, one hook portion en -gages the outer surface of each bar at. a
placeiadjacent to their point of contact so that when the distance between the inner contact surfaces of the hook portions is slightly less than that between the corresponding outer surfaces of the bars, the lat'- ter are held securely together. In order that the clip ma retain its proper positlon on the bars, it s further provided Withruns 5' and 6 having spring portions starting from the continuous sides on the hook portions 1 and-2 respectively.- These runs are equipped: with hooks 7 and 8 adapted to engage the bars 3 and after the runs have been sprung into operative position against` resistance of` the springA portions 9.
To attach a tie clip such aslhave here dei scribed, one of the hook portions is caught under the bar farthest from the operator.
T he clip is then swung in an arc and twistthereof and substantially at right angles to eachother, means for spacing-the lower rod ed so that the otherr hook viillengage the p near har. To complete the operation, the. runs are sprung out of normal positionandl secured to their respective bars by means of' 55 the hooks 7 and 8, except in the case of the't modilied form of,cli`p referred to below in which both o f the runs coperate with the same bar. i
I am familiar with the typeV of tie clips 50 provided with loops near-the' pointv of 'oontact ofA the bars anclwhich inclose one oi" b oth of the bars; but the present construc. tion embodies the principle of the open side clip which may be applied more readily than theloop ties.
The modification illustrated in -Ffigs. 3 and 4, shows the runs 5 and 'foi'med so that the hooks 7 and 8 upon theirends will engag the saine bar instead, of one hook engaging each 'l0 ofthe bars.v This particular form furnishes avery compact device which is convenient to .apply jand `very easy. toack forshipment'.
A further function o clips of the kind shown in the'. drawings'presentedhei'ewith 75 is tosupport the frame work of steel barsA out of contactrwith the forms in connection with which they are 'erected in order that the steel reinforce may occupy its proper position inthe concrete. This object is at 80 tained v'by providing a loop or projecting convolution in thewire, as 10, shown in Figs.
1 and 2, which `holds the bar 3 the required distance away from the surface 4of the form.
It will be understood that the supporting element here described may be formed as a part of thechook portions as Well as of the run or may be incorporated into `the device other, and means for lockingvsaid rod n- 10c y gagng hooks in' operative position. 2. A. tie clip for fastening crossed rein. forcing rods 1n concrete construction, comj prisinga central portion having rod 'engaging hooks disposed at opposite ends from an adjac'zent support or form and ns Fior locking said rod engaging himks in oping m'eans for locking them in oprative po- 1 ei'gitive position.` '4 n, sitinn.
