ELECTRICAL LAMP-SOCKET AND SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern: I Be it known that I, JULIAN H. FAw, a c1t1- zen of the United States, and a resldent of Morsemere, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Qombined Electrical Lamp-Socket and Switch, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawlngs, 1s a full, clear, and concise description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to electrical'lamp sockets adapted to accommodate electric lamps capable of bein-U detachably connected therewith, and has or its'object the provision of a self contained switch forming a part thereof which provides for the convenient control of the lighting circuit. To the accomplishment of this object, I provide a two-part casing, thevparts insulated one from the other, but adapted to be brought into electrical connection through the instrumentality of an annular ring, which is movably mounted upon one part of the casing, but adapted to be brought into connection with the other part of the casing,
thus bridging the two and forming a conductive part for the current. It will be understood that the socket 'is one wherein the shell or casing forms part of the circuit, and, therefore, must coperate with a lamp, which is provided with a casing forming one of its terminals. The other terminal of the lamp being centrally disposed of the lamp, coperates with a centrally located terminal of the socket so as to form a complete circuit when the conducting wires are connected to I the respective terminal parts of the socket.
Referring to the accompanying drawing,
Y Figure 1 isa view in side elevation of a lamp socket embodying my invention. Fig. 2.is a cross-sectional view taken on line a-a. of Fig. 1 with the switch open. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail, similar to Fig. 2 eXcepting that the switch `is shown closed.
In detail, the lamp socket comprises a shell of two-part construction indicated by the numerals l and 2. These are mounted upon a plug of insulating material 3, the part'l being held in positie-.T1 by a suitable screw 4 and part 2 by a suitable screw 5. Preferably molded within the center of the insulated plug is a tube 6, within which the resiliently mounted spring plunger 7 is held and normally pressed outwardly under the tension of the spring 8. This plunger engages and forms electrical contact with the centrally located terminal 9 of the lamp 10. The lower end of the tube 6 receives the end of a flexible'conductor, lwhich y,is held therein by means of the screw 11. The screw 11 serves the dual purpose of holding the conductor in electrical engagement with the tube 12, and also holding the part 2 of the caslng upon the insulated plug 3. In addition to this it serves Aas a conductive path for the current.
It will be understood that the lamp 10 is provided with a plug end having a conductor shell 13, which Serves as one terminal of the lamp. This plug end is provided with pins 14 diametrically opposite one another which coperate with slots-15 of the part l of the socket, so that the lamp can be brought into coperative relationshipl therewith. The. circuit then is through the tube 6, plunger electrode 7, lamp terminal 9, filament of the lamp, one end of which is grounded or in electricall connection with the casing `13` and part l of the lamp socket. Now in order to complete the circuit, the screw threaded knurled ring 16 is provided and is mounted upon the screw threaded end -17 of the part 2 of the socket. This knurled ring is rotated until it engages the chamfered end of the part 1 of the lamp socket as shown in Fig. 3. This completes the circuit so that the current will flow through the ring 16, part 2 of the lamp socket, screw` 5, tube l2 and the other flexible conductor to the battery or other source of electrical energy (not shown).
While I have illustrated one specific form or embodiment of my invention, I would have it understood that I do not wish vto be restricted to the specific details of construction, as these may bealtered and departed from without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the following claims.
Having thus described myl invention, what I claim as new herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combined electric lamp socket and switch comprising a cylindrical shell of twopart construction, an insulating plug within said shell and supporting said two parts shell, and a rotating member adapted to be brought into engagement with both parts trical connection with one of the flexible conductor members When the same is fastened to the insulating plug, and a movable conductor member adapted to connect said lexterior conductor member With the lampreceiving socket to complete the circuit through the lamp.
3. A n electric lamp socket comprising a plug of insulating material, provided with 4fastening means for flexible conductors, and al centrally located plunger conductor for engagement with the central electrode of a lamp, of a two-part shell mounted upon the meme-ee 4. A combined electric lamp casing andv switch, comprising a cylindrical shell, including two shell members of conducting material insulated from each other, one member being formed with a lamp-receiving orifice to accommodate a lamp remov ably fitted therein and forming electrical connection with one terminal thereof, the other member formingl part 0I" the electrical circuit, and a movable conductor member cooperatively associated With both members of thecasing and operating to establish a circuit through the same to illuminate the lamp. l
5. A combined electric lamp casing and switch, comprising a cylindrical shell, including two shell members of conducting material insulated from each other, one member being formed With a lamp-receiving oriice to accommodate a lamp removably fitted therein and forming electrical connection With one terminal thereof, the other member forming part of the electrical circuit, a terminal Within the casing but insulated therefrom, adapted to contact With the other terminal of the lamp, and a movable conductor member cooperatively associated with both members of the casing and operating to establish a circuit through the same to illuminate the lamp.
