Description

'n 'ATIES PATEEN SYLVESTER SPARLING, OF EVANSTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO WILBER M. KIELSO, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, .AND ONE-THIRD TO ROBERT A. AUSTIN, OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FURNACE.
Patented May 30, 1916.
Application filed January 13, 1910, Serial No. 537,943. Renewed March 20, 1916. Serial No. 85,464.
' charring and distillation of wood, and its objects are to provide a novel form of retort and a novel arrangement of supporting and deflecting wings whereby the retort is laterally supported and the flames and products of combustion are directed upon the sides of the retort.
WVith these ends particularly in view the invention consists in the construction and arrangement hereinafter described and then specifically set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference numerals indicate the same parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a view in cross-section of a furnace containing my invention; Fig. 2 is a View on the line 22 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 3 is a view showing one of the sides of the furnace in section .and a part of the retort with one of the lateral wings in position between the retort and furnace.
In the drawings the reference numeral 5 indicates the side walls of the furnace which is provided with a suitable roof having one or more chimneys 6 communicating with the interior. Extending longitudinally of the furnace and at a suitable distance from the side wall are two arches 7 having openings 7 and the fire grate 8 is arranged within the space between these arches as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Upon the arches a retort 9 is located, being set so as to incline or slope slightly toward its rear as shown in Fig. 2. The retort is provided with vertical ends, and its sides are preferably curved inwardly or concave, and its bottom and top may be of any suitable shape or contour, though preferablyI make the top convex as shown in full lines in order that the gases and vapors may be better localized and drawn off at the center, suitable pipe or' The retort is provided with a lateral wing 11 on each side, preferably in the from of a horizontally elongated and transversely arched plate, having a flange 12 along one slde secured in the wall 5 and a Vertical flange 13 along its other side secured to the side of the retort. These wings are preferably located so that they deflector direct the flames and products of combustion against the sides of the retort at or near their middle portions, and may be of any suitable form, arrangement, and material for this purpose, being provided with gaspassages or openings 14 for the flamesand products of combustion in the side of the wing adjacent the retort. The wings also support and brace the retort along its sides. The inclination of the retort causes the heavy tars to run to the rear ends of the side channels where they are drawn off through pipes 15. The interior of the furnace is somewhat greater in cross-sectional area than the size of the retort so that the flames and products of combustion passing through the openings 7 of the arches 7 will pass up around the retort and be directed or deflected by the wings 11 against the sides of the retort at or near their middle portions. By-applying the heat substantially at the middle of the sides and bottom the heat is concentrated at the center of the retort.
I claim In a device of the class described, a retort having a top, a bottom, and concave sides, a furnace having side walls provided with a firebox below the retort, an arch on each side of the fire-box upon which the retort rests and providing lateralpas'sages for the flames, a horizontally disposed upwardly arched wing connected to each side of the retort near its middle portion and to an adjacent side wall of the furnace to brace the latter and having gas passages adjacent the retort, said wing curving upwardly and inwardly from the side wall toward the retort.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
