From the foregoing description, the op-v eration ofthe device will be at once readily understood. When it is designed to throw the eraser block into operative position relative to the platen, this is accomplished by forcing the shaft 16 inward 'against the action of the spring 18. This inward thrust will cause the erasing surface of the eraser block to be thrown into contact with the paper atthe point at -which vthe letter to be'k erased islocated. By forcing downward'the arm of the bell crank lever to its engagement with the operating rod 23, the shaft will, through the means of the pivoted bell crank lever,' bev forced inward, thus lrotatL l ing the eraser carrying shaft 1G and, upon releasing the pressure upon `the key 24, the.
eraser block will be rotated in an l opposite direction by thev action vof the spring 21. It will be' noted that the longitudinal movement imparted to the shaft 16 carrying the eraser block may be accomplished either by an inward pressure applied 'to the button or handle upon the outer end of theshaft or by means of the lever 26.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An erasing attachment for typewriters, embodying a supportingI member, ashaft supported therein, nanerasing block'disposed for end engagement with the paper on the platen, and means'for rotating the block from said shaft said block being so disposed that the outer portion only of the end sur- `40 face of the'block-is utilized lfor erasing purposes.
2. An erasing attachment for typewriters,
embodying a supporting` member, a shaft supported therein, a tapered erasing block disposed for end engagement with the paper on the platen, means for rotating the block from said shaft said block being so disposed. that-.the outer portion only' of the end surface of the block is util-ized for erasing purposes, and means for reversing the direction of rotation of said block to withdraw it yfrom engagement with the paper.
3. An erasing attachment for typewriters comprising .a supporting member. for at- A tachment to a typewriter frame, a shaft longitudinally movable in bearings on said member, a 'transversely disposed rotatable shaft mounted in said member, a polygonal erasing block carried by the last-named shaft, and interengaging means on the two 60 shafts for causing the rotation Iof the last-` v named shaft by the yreciprocation of .the'

6. Ina device of the character described, the combination with a typewriting frame, of an eraser block holder and an eraser block of polygonal form carried thereby for end engagement with ythe paper, means' whereby the shaft of theeraser holder ycan be rotated in one direction by the depression of an operating lever and in its opposite direction automatically rotated spring action, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a device of the character described, 100. the conibinatio11-with a typewriter of a'movy able eraser holder adapted to be moved'inward to position an eraser block of polygonal form in end contact with thevplaten of a typewriter, means for rotating the eraser block holder, andl means for automatically retracting and withdrawing the eraser block from its operative position, substantially as shown and described.
