To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE B. KorILER, a'citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Means for Operating- Doors, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective means for opening and closing doors, particularly those of passenger cars, which are usually located at the side of the car at either end, or at the middle, and which are generally arranged in pairs.
Another object of the invention is to so construct and arrange the mechanism that either one of the doors can be opened or closed independently of the other, or both doors can be opened in unison.
A further object of the invention is to construct the mechanism so that it can be located at one side of the platform, the operating elements being arranged on a horizontal pivot.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional plan view illustrating one end of a passenger car and platform with the two sets of doors in the closed position and the steps raised; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation looking from the interior of the platform toward the doors and showing the doors and steps in the same position as illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line aa, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of a part of the mechanism similar to that illustrated in .Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line b?), Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a detached perspective view,
9 which is provided with a pin 9", which enters a slot in the handle 10 so that the spindle will turn with the handle. Located between the bracket 8 and the plate 7 and secured to the spindle 9 is an arm 11, which is connected by a rod 12 to an arm 13 of a three-armed lever 14 mounted on a stud projecting from a bracket 15 secured to the car frame structure under the platform. The arm 16 of the lever 14 is connected by secured to the inner section of the door '5 so that, when the operating lever is turned, the door will be opened andclosed. The arm 21 of the lever 14k is connected by a rod 22 to a bracket 23 on the step 24, which is pivoted at 25 to a bearing plate 26 which is, in turn, secured to the framework of the car so that when the doors are opened the step is lowered and when the doors are closed the step is raised.
The bracket 8, as illustrated in Fig. 5, has an extending hub 27 in which the shaft 9 is mounted and this hub also forms the bearing for a sleeve 28 on one end of which is the handled operating lever 29 and which has a slot to receive the pin 28 on the said a rod 17 to an arm 18 on the lower pivot' 19, which is firmly attached to a bracket 20 showing the elements for connecting the sleeve. In order to lock the two levers 10 and 29 together, when it is desired to open the doors 5 and 6 simultaneously, pivot a locking lever 40 at 41 on the operating lever 29 and one arm of this locking lever is in the path of a spring push pin 42 in the han vers at the side of the platform, as indi-- cated, so as to be within easy reachof the conductor, whose station is at the platform, these levers may be located at any predetermined point, according to the station of the conductor, or it can be located so that the motorman can operate the doors, as in some types of cars this duty is performed by the conductor and in other type it is performed by the motorman.
In order to counterbalance the steps 24, 1 preferably mount a spring 45 on a rod 46, which is pivoted at 47 to a bracket 48 which carries the step pivot pin 25. This pin passes through an opening in the bracket 48 and through openings in the casing 50, which is secured to the step and is made as illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9. forms a slot for the block 51,'in which the end of the rod 46 is mounted. The combination inmeans for operating doors, of a plate having a bearing thereon; said bearing having a tubular extension a spindle mounted in the tubular bear ing; an arm secured to the spindle at one end; an operating lever secured to the spindle at the other end; a sleeve loosely mounted on the tubular extension and having an arm at one end; an operating lever at the other end; and a latch on the last mentioned operating lever arranged to engage the other operating lever when it is desired to turnthe shaft and the sleeve in unison.
