Be it known that I, GEORGE B. KoHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Door and Step the doors.
These objects I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a sectional plan view of one end of a passenger car, illustrating my invention and showing a portion of the platform broken away; Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view on the line a.-a, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a side view of a portion of a car showing the steps in the raised position; Fig. 4, is an enlarged sectional View on the line -b-Z Fig. 1; Fig. 5, is a sectional View on the line c-c, Fig. 4; Fig. 6, is a sectional view on the line dd, Fig. 1; Fig. 7, is a view of a modification of the invention; Fig. 8, is an enlarged side view of the operating handle; and Fig. 9, is a sectional View on the line e--e, Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the body of the car and 2 is the platform.
3 and 1 are the doors, in the present instance mounted on vertical pivot rods 5 and 6, respectively. The doors are made in two parts and rods 7 are connected to the outer section of each door and to a fixed point at the roof of the platform, so that, when the doors are opened, the outer section of the' door will be properly guided into the open or the closed position, but the ordinary rail may be substituted for the bars without departing from the essential features of the invention.

bearing 12 located in the floor-l3 of the platform. Adjustably secured to the shaft under the floor are two cams 1e and 15, and at the upper end of the shaft is an operating handle 16. Each cam has a single slot therein, and 18, 18 are two rods, one rod extending over the cams and the other rod under the cams. Both rods have slotted heads 19 and the shaft 9 extends through the slot in each head and acts as a guide for the inner end of said rods.
Secured to'the lower end of each pivot rod 5 and 6 is an arm 8. 'One rod 18 is secured to one arm 8 and the other rod is secured to the other arm 8. The upper rod 18 has a pin 20 which extends into the groove in the upper cam 14, and the lower rod has a pin 21 which extends into the groove in the lower cam 15, so that, when theoperating shaft is turned, the doors are opened or closed. The cams are so formed, in the present instance, that the pins, when the doors are closed, are located in the concentric portion of the groove and, when the cams are turned in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, the door 3 will be opened first, followed by the door 4. If the direction of movement of the shaft is reversed then the door 4 will be opened first, followed by the door 3. This construction enables the operator to open either one of the doors or both of them with one operating handle.
By mounting the cams independently on the shaft, I can mount the shaft at any point on the platform, or pivot the doors at either edge and the cams can be set at the proper position after the shaft is located.
The present invention relates particularly to the means for operating the step in connection with a door, which I will now proceed to describe. Located at the side of the platform, under the door 3, is a step 22 and located under the door 4.- is a step 28-. These two steps are independently operated and are moved with their respective doors. Each step is pivoted at 2 1 to a bracket 25 secured to the framework of the platform;
the brackets also form the risers of the steps. The step 22 has a diagonallyprojecting pin 26 which extends through a slot 27 in a curved arm 28 rigidly securedto the lower end of the pivot rod 5 of the door 3. A similarly curved arm 28 isattached to the pivot rod 6 of the door a and a diagonal pin'26 on the step 23 projects through the slot in this arm. Each arm is curved both in a horizontal and a vertical plane and the .form of the slot is clearly shown in Figs.

Either door-and its step can be actuated first, according to the direction in which the operating shaft is turned. In some instances, where it is desired to operate the step independently of the doors, or by means of a vertical shaft controlled from the oper- 'atingshaft through independent means, this can be accomplished and the door or doors opened by other means, without departing from the essential features of the invention.
Instead of the slotted arm illustrated in Figs. '5 and 6,1 may use the arm shown at 29, Fig. 7, adapted to a slotted projection 80 on the step, but I prefer the construction illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. By using the rods 7 r to control themovements of the outer sections of the two-part doors, I am enabled to'dispense With the usual rails and rollers. In the-present instance I have shown an improved latch for locking the handle 16 to the rail, inorder to lock the doors and steps in the closed position. On the handle 16 are two latchess32 arranged transversely, being pivoted to the outer edges of the lever and these latches engage opposite sides of a keeper 33 on the rail 11. A lever 17 pivoted to the under side of the handle 16 projects under the extensions of the two latches and a-pushpin3l in the vertical portion of the ha-ndlearests on the opposite end of the lever from the latches so that when the push pin is depressed the'latches will be raised clear of the keeper so that the handle can be turned in either direction and when the latchesarereleasedone acts as a stop for the vent the handle from moving in either direction.
I claim lpThe combination of a step; a pivot therefor; a'vertical operating shaft; an arm secured to the lower end of the shaft; and a projection on the step engaging the arm so that as the shaft is rotated the arm will turn the step on its pivot.
2. The combination of a door; a pivot rod therefor; means for turning the pivot rod to open or close the door; a curved arm on the pivot rod; a pivoted step below the door and having a projection engaging the arm on the pivot rod so that, as the rod is turned to open the door, the step will be lowered and, when the rod is turned in the opposite direction to close the door, the step will be raised.
3. The combination of a platform; a door closing the passageway at the edge of the platform; a vertically arranged pivot rod to which the door is secured; means for turning the rod to open or close the door; a slotted curved arm secured to the rod; a step pivoted to the platform under the door and having a projection extending into the slot of the arm so that, when the rod is turned to open or close the door, the step will be lowered or raised.

The combination of a. platform; two doors arranged side by side and closing the platform; a pivot rod for each door; an operating shaft common to both doors; cams on the operating shaft; rods connected to the doors and actuated by the cams wherebv. on the turning of the shaft, the doors will be opened or closed; a step mounted at the edge of the platform under each door; a
diagonally projecting pin extending from each step near the pivot; a slotted curved arm secured to each pivot rod below the platform; and a diagonal pin on each step proiecting through its respective slotted arm so that, when the pivot rods are turned. on the operation of the shaft, the steps will be moved on their pivots.
6. The combination of a step; a pivot therefor; a vertical operating shaft; a curved arm secured to the lower end of the operating shaft; a projection on the step engaging the arm so that as the shaft is rotated the arm will turn the step on its pivot; and means for looking the shaft in a predetermined position. p
