NON-BEFILLABLE CIGAR-BOX.
Application filed. November 13, 1915.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Gnrrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvement in Non Refillable Cigar- Boxes, of which the-following isa specification.
This invention is an improved cigar box which is non-refillable and which is adapted to automatically dispense or deliver cigars therefrom, one at a time, by turning the box over endwise, the object of the invention being to provide an improved cigar box of this character which is light, strong, which may be readily manufactured at slight cost and the dispensing mechanism of which is simple in construction and is not likely to get out of order.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a non-refillable and self-dispensing cigar box constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same arranged in initial position. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line b-b of Fig. 1. Figs. 4156 are detail longitudinal sectional views, each of the dispensing end of the box and showing the box in different positions and illustrating the passage of a cigar through the dispensing mechanism by the turning of the box.
The box 1 which is of the usual oblong rectangular form may in practice be made of tin or other suitable material and its cover or top 2 is preferably, in practice, soldered in place or otherwise fastened after the box has been filled with cigars. In the bottom of the box is a regulating tray 3 which is also preferably made of sheet metal and which is transversely corrugated providing regulating chambers 4 into which the cigars of the bottom layer individually fit and which regulated tray or bottom, while the box is being turned over endwise, causes the cigars to move, one at a time, to the dispensing mechanism which I will now describe.
At one end and near the upper corner of the box is a dispensing chamber 5 which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1916.
Serial No. 61,395.
comprises bottom and top walls 6-7, and an 1nner end wall 8 and a wall 9 which extends upwardly from the wall 7 to the cover of the box and is spaced from the approximate end wall 10 of the box to form a discharge portion 11 of the dispensing chamber. The bottom wall 6 of the dispensing chamber terminates short of the end wall 10 of the box so that an opening 12 is formed and at the inner end of this opening is an inclined fender 13 which is spaced a suitable distance from the tray 3 and permits the cigars to move only one at a time from the tray or regulating bottom 3 to the wall 10.
A controlling valve 1 1 is arranged in the end of the dispensing chamber under the discharge portion 11 and next the wall 10,
said controlling valve being over the opening 12 and adapted to open and close said opening 12. A weight plate 15 which may be made of leador other suitable material is arranged in the end of the box next the wall 10, adapted to normally bear on the bottom of the box between the wall 10 and the regulating tray 3 and this weight plate is connected by a sheet metal wall or other suitable connection 16 to the controlling valve, the said wall or connecting element 16 being engaged at its ends by suitable guides 17 which are arranged in the angles between the end wall 10 and the side walls of the box, said guides permitting the controlling valve and the weight plate to move vertically and preventing them from moving otherwise. A lid 18 is provided at the outer end of the discharge portion 11 and is pivotally mounted as at 19 and in practice may be provided at one end of its pivotal axis with an operating knob 20. 'At the bottom of the discharge portion 11 of the dispensing chamber are a pair of discharge valves 21 each of which is pivotally mounted at its outer side as at 22 so that said valves are arranged to open downwardly and said valves are held in normal position by suitable stops 23.
The operation of my invention is as follows: Normally the valves 14 and 21 are closed and the weight plate 15 is in lowered position, bearing on the bottom of the box. The dispensing mechanism of the box is operatedby slowly turning the box over, complete and otherwise in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. As the box first reaches a nearly vertical position a cigar passes from the tray or bottom 3 un-' der the fender 13 and in front of the weight plate. Assuming that a cigar is also in the dispensing chamber, the last named cigar drops to a position between the valves 1421. As the box is turned to inverted position the cigar from the dispensing chamber drops, by the opening of the valves 21 into the discharge portion 11 of the dispensing chamber and the weight plate 15 and valve 14- drop so that the first named cigar is carriedinto the dispensing chamber with the valve 14. When the box is arranged in the position shown in Fig. 6 the cigar drops into the inner end of the dispensing chamber, out of line with the valves and ready to be dispensed at the next revolution of the box and as the box is restored to its initial position, as shown in Fig. 1, the weight plate and the valves 1i2l again drop to initial position. Hence my improved cigar box while enabling cigars to be singly dispensed therefrom merely by turning the box completely over prevents the refilling of the box, the valves 1d21 closing against any attempt to put cigars in the box through the dispensing mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A box of the class described having interiorly arranged walls forming a dispensing chamber, said dispensing chamber having an entrance opening on one side communicating with the interior of the box and having a dischar e portion leading from the other side, an outwardly opening valve in the discharge portion, an inwardly opening controlling valve to open and close. the entrance opening and a weight to operate said controlling valve.
2. A box of the class described having interiorly arranged walls forming a dispensing chamber said dispensing chamber having an entrance opening on one side communicating with the interior of the box and having a discharge portion leading from the other side, an outwardly opening valve in the discharge portion, an inwardly opening controlling valve to open and close the entrance openings and a weight to operate said controlling valve, the box being also provided with means to cause articles to be fed singly to the controlling valve.
3. A box of the class described having interiorly threaded walls forming a dispensing chamber said dispensing chamber having an entrance opening on one side communicating with the interior of the box and having a discharge portion leading from the other side, and inwardly opening controlling valve to open and close the entrance oaenin and a wei ht to o erate said con- D trolling valve, said weight being normally arranged in the bottom of the box and con nected to the controlling valve, a regulating device providing substantially semi-circular transverse channels in the bottom of the box, said weight comprising a plate normally located at one end of the box and between the same and said regulating devicv, and the dispensing chamber having a fender extending from one side of the inlet opening toward the re ulating device.
In testimony whereof I aihx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
