HENRY C. MILLER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
E-LEXIBLE BINDER-POST FOR LOOS-LEAF BINDER/S.
Application filed' November 5, 1915.
17 o all 'whom t may concern 13e it known that l, lil-:NKY C. Minnen, a
citizen of the United ltitates, and resident ot' Milwaukee, in the'county or' Milwaukee and State of v\\"'isconsin, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Flexible vlinder-Posts for Loose-Leal Binders; and
fnent .ndit is therefore the object of the present invention to' provide a means for adijusting the relative positions of the binder headsfin a manner independent of the adjustment procured by moving the posts into one of the heads, whereby an exceedingly Wide scope o' adjustment may be had, it hcing more particularly an object to provide this larger degree ol adjustment without intert'erence with the retraction of the flexible posts to procure desired finer degree of ad` justrnent and to procure the aforementioned clamping function of the leaves in the head.
It is further an object of the present invention to provide means facilitating thev movement ol the flexible post sections from the respective binder head in which they are disposed to thus permit expulsion of the post sections from the head by means d1sposed within the head. i
Vvlih the above and other objects and ad-y Vantages in view, the invention U particularly in the novel combination', ar-
rangement and formation of parts more par-- hereinafter described and partiout in the appended claims. had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectionalvievv taken through the head portion of the loose leaf binder and embodying in the present invention.- Fig@ is a horizontal sectional view ticularly cularly pointed Reference is taken on the'iine 2-2 of lFig. 1, through the' base head member and showing the adjust- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing mechanism. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 andt designate respectively the upper and lower binder heads which are in the form ot' elongated caslngs substantially oblong in cross-section and closed at their ends by the solid end blocks, 7. The upper clamping head 5 is provided With a hinge top 8 which is normally held in closed position by the locking rod f), passed longitudinally into the casing and engaging alined ears 10, carried within the casing and secured thereto and to the cover, this being the usual construction to permit adjustment and manipulation of the binder posts.
For receiving the binder posts, the inner side of the upper head is provided adjacent its ends with bearing sleeves 11 extending ther-cinto, and the corresponding portions o't' the base head member having outwardly termed sleeve portions 12. The binder posts ot the present invention are 'l'ornied each ot a'series of short metallic links 123 each formed of-a cylindrical section havingv a slot in one endand a lug on its other end engageable in the slot of the adja cent linlc whereby a continuously cylindrical body structure is provided. The inner end portions of the bodies and lugs are rounded to permit the posts to flex n one diret-tion only, and the posts are passed through the sleeve 12 and'bent inwardly to extend in the base head 6. Each of the flexible post bodies terminates at its end adjacent the upper head 5 in a cylindrical porthe liexible body portions may operate to provide linger room in manipulating the leaves and to provide forattaehments Within lesser limits. Disposed within the head 5 is a. securing member includin a knurled head 17, resting against the s eeve 11 and a threaded shank, engageable in the socket of the section 16, or in the section lftif no extensions 16 are provided. i
The means forretracting and extending the flexible post bodies comprises a feed loo ilo i screw 19, extending longitudinally in one side of the base head and-bearing at' its ends in the end blocks, of .the head, this f screw being provided with oppositely inclined series of threads with which are s engaged carriageblocks 20,01 oblong shape Y whereby they areheld against-.rotation and f for sliding'movemen't by' abutment with adjacent sides of the head casing.` The inner ends of the4 flexible post bodies terminate in cylindrical sections'21',which are engaged in the'blocks and secured. Thus by rotating theeed screw in either direction, the llexible posts will be extended from or retracted into the head. For manipulating the feed screw, the end plugs 7 of thebase head are provided with sockets 22 into which extend secured extremities of the lfeed screwwhich are engageable by the usual Vsectional Hpost binderkey. Proper movement of the exible post, sections in moving outwardly ot' the binder head through the openings 12 is insured by a guide Shield 23 in the shape of al1 elbow channel member which is seff cured in the head fd at the outer sides of the 25 sleeve 12 and Jwhich curves inwardly to the A opposite wall of the head. This movement of the post sections is also'facilitated by the, iorniation of the end portions of the linksand of the said lugs thereof, it being noted that the outer side of each of the lugs `and the end of the adjacent link is each curved coincident with the arc of a circle having the pivotal connection of the link i as its center whereby a continuous outer N5A curved 'edge is provided upon bending of f the links. y"An exceedingly simple, readily operated, arid compact structure' is thus provided as the .link of the post between the -heads may loe-adjusted to any degree, a'djustlrment ofsaid posts may thus provide the vclamping means for the leaves between the heads and thus obviates the necessity of a '.sprin clamping plate suchas is usually rovi ed. Finger room between the eddsto facilitate insertion or removal of theleaves, may always be had irrespective A of the number of leaves held in the binder by means of the provision of the extension sections 16, which will be' used in connection with relatively eat variation in the width of thee-leaf bo ies held, minor variations being provided for bythe flexible adjust ment of the posts. v f Although theposts have been described 5 5 fas comprising a` series of links, I do not desire to limit m self to this structure as it is y obvious that the posts could be formed in f any manner and of any material to insure desired lexure.` It is also obvious that vari- Wous meanscould be provided in the base l. A"head for adjustingthe posts without departing from the spirit of the invention in any manner. f-lj, lhile I 'have/shown and described the @il binder al crossing a single head wherein the ing the same, thus increasing t 'jutment of the posti; c v
' vtieners exible posts are adapted to travel back and forth for-the purpose o f extendingv or retracting thedevice, it is obvious that I may, in some instances, Without departing from the s irit of m invention, provide both of the inder hea s with means for reeeiving the movable ends of the post members and means for extending` and retrat ic scope of ad- .1. A loose leaf binder comprising binder heads, and post members each formed of a l Hexible body having a socketed end to receive extension links and means associated 30 with the other ends of the post members or extending or retracting the` posts.
