APPARATUS FOR PREJPARING PAVING MATERIALS.
My invention relates to an apparatus for.
preparing asphalt or other bituminous material for paving, and has as its principal object to utilize the heat delivered from a furnace in the most eflicient manner.
A further object of my invention is to design an apparatus adapted to heat aggregates of sand or stone and, at the same time, to liquefy any bituminous materials such as coal tar or asphalt, and also furnish a supply of steam.
A further object resides in the particular arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described.
Heretofore it has been customary in preparing materials for laying pavements, to employ three separate heating apparatus, one for heating the asphalt, coal tar, or other bituminous material, a second for heating the mineral aggregate of sand stone or other material, and the third for creating steam power to operate the machinery in connection with the first mentioned apparatus, and each of the said apparatus has commonly been furnished with a separate source of heat, either by direct fire heat or steam heated coils.
In my improved apparatus I avoid the losses due to separate furnaces and produce an apparatus which is much more compact and can be operated with less labor by utilizing an internally fired or other type of boiler, over which is placed an additional drum for containing the asphalt, coal tar, or other bituminous material so that such material may come in direct contact with the shell of the boiler, the heat transmitted from which will maintain the material at a suitable temperature to allow its mixture in the aggregates of pavement or other material. The gases coming from the furnace of the boiler lead through a revolving drum or kiln adapted to receive and discharge the crushed stone and other material used as aggregates in the construction of pavements.

of an internally fired boiler incased in a tank for receiving asphalt or other material to be heated in a liquid condition. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts connecting with those shown in Fig. 1, parts being broken away and part of the apparatus of Fig. 1 being shown in section. Fig. 3 is an elevational view partly in section and parts being broken away on a somewhat smaller scale than Figs. 1 and 2 and illustrating the same apparatus shown in said figures.
In the separate views the same part is designated by the same reference character.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 is a boiler of the internally fired type provided with a flue 2 in which is a furnace 3. The fine 2 connects with a combustion chamber 4; from which fire tubes 5 are shown leading through the steam space 6 of the boiler to the stack housing 7 at the front of the boiler. from the housing 7, which connects with a separate boiler stack, (not shown) and which is provided with a damper 9. A second connection, indicated as 8 in both Figs. 1 and 2, leads from the housing 7 to an exhaust fan case 29 and is provided with a damper 9 as shown in Fig. 2. Surrounding the kiln of the boiler 1 is a tank or drum 10 provided with an inlet aperture 11 at the top, into which the asphalt or other material to be heated may be charged. Pipes such as 12-12 are shown leading from the bottom of the tank by which the asphalt or coal tar may be drawn from the tank 10.
The boiler 1 is provided with a suitable steam pipe 13 by which the steam may be withdrawn for use from the steam space 6, and also feed pipes 14 by which water may be fed into the boiler. A man hole opening 15 is shown connecting the steam space 6 to the interior of the housing 7 and in the drawing this opening is shown open but of course in practice it would be closed by a man hole plate such as is familiar to the boilermakers art.
As shown at the right hand end of Fig. 1, the rear walls of the combustion chamber 4 and the boiler shell 1 are apertured and flanged so as to provide a passage 16 through which gases may pass from the chamber 4:. As shown in Fig. 2, passage 16 is covered by a fixed flue or cylinder 17 which is provided with an opening or outlet spout 18 from the bottom. Gases coming from the furnace 3 pass through the cham- A stack connection 8 leads her 4 and passage 16, into the fine 17 and then into a revolving drum or kiln 19. The end of the flue 17 removed from the boiler is extended outside of the left end of the drum 19 and the latter is provided with an angle iron 20 which projects outwardly near the end of the flue 17, so as to prevent the escape of gases and material at the point of connection between the two. At the end of the drum 19, opposite the this 17, is a second fixed fine 21 having an inlet 22 through which material is fed into the spout 22 from which it passes into the drum 19.

A fan 31 is indicated within the casing 29 in dotted lines and a small steam turbine 32, or other suitable driving means is provided for running the fan 31, the steam pipe 33 of the turbine or other motor being preferably connected to the steam pipe 13 of the boiler 1. A damper 34 is provided between. the flue 21 and case 29 and'serves to regulate the flow of gasesthrough 21*. It will be apparent that becausebf the suction produced bythe fan to pass out through the-outletv 18 or the-inlet 22 for the aggregate material; r
It will bennderstood that in the operawhich is driven by steam derived from the boilerl and the fan 29 is also driven by steam from the same source. Crushed stone, sand and other material for use in the pavement is fed into the apparatus at 22 and passing through thedrum 19 is heated by the gases from the furnace 3, being withdrawn from the apparatus at 18. Said aggregate forming material is fed into the inlet 22 from time to time as desired, and liquid is withdrawn from the tank 10 to mix therewith when needed. The dampers 9 and 34 are-then regulated as designed so as to maintain a proper supply of steam in the boiler and also heat the material for the aggregate to the desired temperature. It
will be understood that if no material is being fed through the drum 19, the damper 34 may be closed and all of the gases sent through the connection 8 on the way to the,
stack whereby a high pressure of steam and a large supply of hot Water may be accumulated and then when the material is to be heated by the drum 9, the dampers may be manipulated so as to send the majority of the gases from the furnace through the drum 19 and the heat stored in the boiler may be drawn upon to maintain the operation of the drum and fan. Of course, it will be understood that when the material is being passed through drum 19 in practically continuous succession, the damper 9 will need to be adjusted to maintain the average flow of gases through the tubes 5 needed to maintain the required steam pressure, but frequently the operation of the drum 19 is more or less'intermittent. Thus it will be seen that by my apparatus I am able to furnish steam for operating the revolving kiln or other necessary apparatus for the preparation of paving material, and, at the same time,'heat asphalt and the materials being prepared by the use of only one furnace. Consequently, the entire operation requires the service of only one attendant to oversee the apparatus.
It will also be evident that my improved apparatus may be applied to either the construction of sheet asphalt, bituminous concrete or any other form of pavement wherein asphalt, coal tar, or any other form of bituminous material is used in connection with sand, carbonate of lime, stone, or other form of mineral aggregate, and that my apparatus has many advantages of economy in construction and in the production of the pavement.
It will be evident that my apparatus can be applied to other methods of operation or for'tlie drying of sand in the manufacture of plaster and other purposes wherein a power and drying furnace is used in connection with the operation of the same.
It will be understood that while I have described and shown the preferred form of my invention, certain changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In an apparatus of the class described in combination, a boiler provided with a furnace and having a combustion chamber, a smoke box for said boiler, fire tubes connecting said combustion chamber and said smoke box, said box being provided with a stack connection, a damper for regulating the flow of gases through said tubes, a rotary kiln, connections between said combustion chamber and said kiln for introducing furnace gases into the latter, a stack to which said kiln is connected, and a damper for regulating the flow of gases through said kiln.
2. In an apparatus of the class described in combination, a boiler provided with a furnace and having a combustion chamber, a smoke box for said boiler, fire tubes connecting said combustion chamber and said smoke box, said box being provided with a stack connection, a damper for regulating the flow of gases through said tubes, a rotary kiln, connections between said combustion chamber and said kiln for introducing furnace gas into the latter, a stack to which said kiln is connected, a damper for regulating the flow of gases through said kiln, and a tank connected to the exterior of said boiler.
3. In an apparatus of the class described in combination, a boiler provided with a furnace and having a combustion chamber, a smoke box for said boiler, fire tubes connecting said combustion chamber and said smoke box, said box being provided with a stack connection, a damper for regulating the flow of gases through said tubes, a rotary kiln, connections between said combustion chamber and said kiln for introducing furnace gases into the latter, a stack to which said kiln is connected, a damper for regulating the flow of gases through the kiln, a tank connected to the exterior of said boiler, a motor for rotating said kiln, and a steam connection between said boiler and said motor.
4. In an apparatus for preparing paving material in combination, a cylindrical steam boiler, a furnace for said boiler, and an asphalt tank arranged on the exterior of said boiler and concentric therewith.
5. In an apparatus for preparing paving material in combination, a cylindrical return tubular boiler having a furnace therein, and an asphalt tank carried on the ex terior of said boiler and concentric therewith.
6. In an apparatus for preparing paving material in combination, a cylindrical return tubular boiler having a furnace therein, an asphalt tank attached to the exterior of said boiler and concentric therewith, a rotary kiln, connections between said furnace and said kiln for introducing furnace gases into the latter, a motor for revolving said kiln, and steam connections between said motor and said boiler.
