To all whom it may concern I lie it known that I, CARL R. F. PALM, a citizen of the United States of-America, and a resident of Elizabeth, Union county, State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Locking Device for Jail- Doors and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in locking devices for jail doors and the like, particularly groups or series of doors, such as those of a cell-corridor, and comprises improved means for selecting and operating, by means of a single operating device, the latches or looks of any one or all of a series of doors, together. with means for opening, by a single actuation of a single operating device, the particular door, or all of the doors, the latch mechanism of which have been so operated.
Other features of my invention will be pointed out hereinafter.
The objects of my invention are to improve and simplify locking mechanism and door opening mechanism such as are employed in connection with jail or prison doors; and to provide improved and simplified means whereby the latch mechanism of any particular door, or all of the doors, of a series, may be operated by a single operating device, and whereby the particular door, or all of the doors, the latches of which have been so operated, may be opened and closed by the operation of a single operating device.
Other objects of my invention will appear hereafter.
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, and will then point out the noval features in claims.
In said drawings: Figure 1 shows a side elevation, looking from the bottom of Fig. 2, or left of Fig. 3, of door locking and dooropening mechanism embodying my invqntion, the view showing one door only of a series. Fig. 1 is a detail top view of one of the'transverse pivoted members of the looking mechanism, the support for that member being shown in horizontal section. Fig. 1 is a detail side view and partial section of a portion of the snap lock mechanism. In the drawings, 1 designates a sliding door of ordinary construction, supported by rollers 2 running on a rail 3 in the ordinary manner. .1 designates a vertically movable latch bar mounted to slide vertically in a channel formed in one side of the door, and
having in it slots 5 adapted to receive when said latch bar is in raised position, stationary latch-bolts 6 projecting from the frame of the doorway. When the latch bar 1 is in its lower position it engages the heads of these latch-bolts 6, and so prevents the opening of the door.
For raising any selected latch-bar 4 I provide a pivoted transverse latcliopei'ating member 7, (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) pivoted to any suitable support 8 and one end of which, in the construction shown, is between lugs 9 and 10 projecting from the latch-bar 4. The other end of this pivoted member 7 carries an anti-friction roller 11, Fig. 1. working 'within a groove 12 of a cam plate 13 or 13". etc.. mounted upon a longitudinally movable actuating bar 14 connected by a link 15 to a pivoted actuating lever 16. There may be a number of these longitudinally movable bars 14. In Fig. 3 I have shown one such bar in full lines and by dotted lines have indicated that there may be other such bars. Bearing rollers 17 are commonly provided for these bars 14, so that said bars may slide freely. Each bar 14, and the operating lever 16. connected thereto. commonly control the latch mechanisms of a number of doors, and each bar 14 therefore carries a number of cam plates 13?, 13", etc., of designs differing slightly one from another, as hereinafter shown, each cam plate being located upon the bar 14, ad jacent to its corresponding door andin proper position to actuate the transverse pivoted member 7 of the latch mechanism of such door, when the bar 14 is moved longitudinally. It is desirable that by the hand lever 16 it may be possible to release the latches of all'of the doors controlled by that hand lever, and also, at will, to release the latch of any particular door of the set controlled by' that hand lever, without releasing the latches of the other doors of that set or series. Fig. 4 shows, side by side, a number ofdifferent' .cam plates constituting a set which may be mounted upon a single operating bar 14. The hand lever 16 operates in connection with a toothed sector 18, and-is provided with a latch-dog 19 operated by grip lever 20, whereby various positions of the lever 16 maybe determined precisely. As will be seen from this figure, the cam groove 12 of each 'of these cam plates has,
near its left hand end, a drop 21 corresponding in position to the second notch 21*, of sector 18. Each of the cam plates'13, except the first of those plates, 13", has a furtherdrop 22 separated from the drop 21 by a rise 23, and then, beyond such drop 22,
has a further continuous rise 24. In cam plate 13 the drop 22 is continuous with the drop 21, this drop 22 of cam plate 13 corresponding to the third notch, 22, of sector 18, while the drop 22 of cam plate 13 is positioned on that cam plate to correspond 'to the notch 22 of sector 18; the drop '22 of cam plate l3is positioned to correspond to notch 22 of sector 18; and so on. It will be seen that by moving the lever 16 so that its dog 19 is in notch 21 of sector 18 the drops 21 of all of the cam plates 13 13", etc., will have depressed the corresponding ends of the transverse pivoted members 7, and so' will have raised the latch-bars 4 of all of the doors of the series or group controlled by that particular lever 16 and actuating bar 14. Therefore, with the dog 19 in the second notch of sector, viz :n0tch 21 all of the latch mechanisms of the doors of the group controlled by lever 16, will have been operated to release'said doors. If the lever 16 be moved until its dog 19 is in the third notch, viz :notch 22, then all of the cam plates except cam plate 13 will have actuated their transverse pivoted members 7 to drop the corresponding latch-bars 4, while cam plate 13 will retain its latch plate 4 in raised position; the latch mechanism of the first door of the series being therefore in position to permit the opening of that door. correspondingly, by moving the lever 16 until its dog 19 is in notch 22*, the latch mechanism of the first door will hold its door locked, and the latch mechanism of the second door of the series will be in condition by, moving the lever 16 until its dog 19 is in or opposite the .notch of the sector 18 corresponding to a particular selected door, the latch mechanism of that door will be operated to permit the opening of the door. Also it will be apparent that the latch mechanisms of all of the doors of the series are actuated to release those doors, by movement of the lever 16 until its dog is opposite the second notch of the sector 18. However, the operation of the latch mechanism of any particu- I lar door in such manner that such door is released by that latch mechanism, does not completely unlock the door. For the complete unlocking of the door and for the opening of the door, a further hand operated master lever, 25, is provided; said lever being connected by a link 26 to another horizon'tally movable master actuating bar 27. One bar 27 may operate all of the doors, or any selected door, of a. plurality of groups or sets of doors, the latch mechanism of each of which sets is controlled by a separate hand lever 16; there being one lever 16 for eachof said sets of doors, as previously explained. The actuating bar 27 is provided for each door which it is to control and open, with engaging means, such for example as the lug 28 whereby such bar 27 niay be thrown into engagement with door opening thatmember 7 is operated to raise the latch bar 4, the link 32 is also raised into engagement with the engaging means 28 of the actuating bar 27. In the construction shown the link 32 has a notch 34 which engages the lug 28 of the actuating bar 27 when the link 321,.is raised as described. In' the construction shown the pivoted member 7 has a forked end 35 embracing the link 32 (see Fig. 3) and when the door is in the closed position, shown in Fig. 1, the link 32 extends beyond member 7, to the left, a distance such that as the door opens, the link 32, sliding through the forked connection 35 of member 7, will remain in engagement with member 7 throughout the opening movement of the door.
. It will thus be apparent that when, by the lid actuation of hand lever 16, the latch bar -l of any particular door has been raised, the link 32 corersponding to that door will also be raised into engagement with the engaging means 28 of the actuating bar 27; and if hand lever 25 be then pulled out, and the actuating bar 27 moved horizontally, this bar will transmit motion through its engaging means 28 to the toggle mechanism 29 of that door, thus opening the door. It will be obvious that if the latch bars 4 of a. plurality of doors, (for example, all of the doors of a series or all of the doors of several series, or certain selected doors of several series) are raised and then the master lever 25 is oper ated, all of the doors whose latch bars 4: have been so raised Will be opened, all of the other doors, if any, remaining locked. It
will be obvious that if the lever or levers 16 which have been operated to select certain doors, remain in'the selecting positions corresponding to those doors after the doors have been opened in the manner described, return of the lever25 to the position shown in Fig. 1 will close those doors. It will also be obvious that with certain doors opened as described, if the selecting lever or levers 16 by the operation of which one or more of those doors was selected for opening, be returned to first position, the door or doors may be closed by hand, independent of the lever It will further be obvious that after a door or doors have been selected for opening by operation of one'or more of the levers 16, and then such door or doors have been opened by means of the lever 25, if all of the levers 16 which have been so operated are returned to first position, the lever 25 may be returned to first position without closing any of the doors so opened, and thereafter the lever or levers 16 may be operated to select for opening another door or doors not theretofore opened, and then, by operation of the lever 25, such further selected doors may be opened; and so on.
The lever 25 is provided with a grip-dog 36 normally engaging a keeper 37. So long as the dog. 36 is in engagement with the keeper 37 none of the doors may be forced,
open, even though the links 32 of certain of those doors may have been raised and even though the latch bars 4 of certain of those doors may have been raised; for raising of the links 32 merely brings the notches 34 of those links in engagement with the lugs'28 of the master bar 27, and so long as the master bar is stationary the doors cannot be opened. Therefore, as above stated, the operation of the latch bar 4 of any door does not completely unlock that door; the dog 86 of the lever 25 must, in addition, be disengaged from the keeper 37, and then the lever 25 operated, to open any door.
When any door which has been opened is W closed by hand, the upper lug 9 of the latch bar 4: of that door (which lug 9 has a beveled front face as shown particularly in Fig. 1") will encounter the transverse member 7, if that member be in an elevated position, and so will raise the latch bar t so as to bring that latch bar into proper engagement-with the member 7. If the member 7 be in its lowermost "position, when the door is closed, the beveled front faces of the locking bolts 6 will raise the latch bar l permitting such bar to engage such latch bolts.
It will be understood that the various levers 16, and the lever 25, are commonly located. in a protected space to which access may not be gained by the prisoners and from which such levers may be operated with security.
As shown in Fig. 6, the latch bars 4 may be mounted in one side of the doorway, in stead of in the door itself, in which case the latch bolts 6 are mounted on the door.-
lVhat I claim is:
1. The combination with a plurality of sets of doors, each set comprising a plurality ofdoors, of door locking and door opening mechanism therefor comprising'a mo"- able master door-opening member common to all of the sets of doors, and separate selecting means, one for each set of doors, for operatively connecting the several doors of that set to said master member, each such selecting means comprising a movable selecting device, for all of the doors of that set, and means operated thereby arranged to be positioned in one or another of several positions, and thereby to place one or an 'other of the doors of that set in operative connection with said master member.
2. The combination with a plurality of sets of doors, each setcomprising a plurality of doors, of door locking and door opening mechanism therefor comprising a movable master door-opening member common to all of the sets'of doors..a1'1 d separate selecting means, one for each set of doors, for operatively connecting the several doors of that set to said mastermember, each such selecting means comprising a movable selecting device, for all of the doors of that set, and means operated thereby arranged to be positioned in one or another of several positions, and thereby to place one or another of the doors of that set in operative connection withsaid master member, such selecting means each having one position at which all of the doors of its set are operatively connected to said master member.

prising a plurality of slide cams. one for each such door. cach cam of different contour from the others, a plurality of transverse pivoted members. one for each such door, and each operatively engaging the cam corresponding to that door. a separat door moving means for each door comprising a movable operating member engaging the transverse pivoted member 'for that door, each such operating member andthe master member having corresponding engaging means whereby the master member and such operating member may be brought into and outv of operative engagement at will, the latch bar for each door having means for engaging it with the corresponding transverse pivoted member, whereby when operated, mayraise such latch bar.
l. Door locking means comprising a longitudinally movable master member, means for moving the: same, a longitudinally movable selecting member arranged generally parallel to said master member and provided with a plurality of slide cams each of different contour from the others, a plurality of door moving means each comprising a movable operating member adapted to be moved into and out of driving connection with said movable master member, and a pivoted actuating device for each such operating member, arranged generally transversely to said master member and selecting member and engaging and arranged to be actuated by the corresponding cam and also engaging and arranged to actuate the corresponding operating member.
Door locking means comprising a longitudinally movable master member, means for moving the same, a longitudinally mov able selecting bar arranged generally parallel to said master member and having secured to it, at appropriate points, slide cams, each of different contour from the others, a plurality of door moving means each comprising-a movable operating member adaptable selecting bar arrange ed to be moved into and out of driving connection with said movable master member, and a pivotedactuating device for each such operating member arranged generally transversely to said master member and "selecting member and engaging and arranged to be actuated by the corresponding'cam, each opcrating member having a sliding engagement with its corresponding pivoted actuating device and arranged to be moved by that actuating devie, under the influence of the corresponding cam, into and out of engagement with the master member.
6. Door locking means comprising a longitudinally movable master member, means for moving the same, a lon itudinally movgenerally parallel to said master member, and having secured to it, at appropriate points, slide cams, each having a cam groove on one side face, th cam groove of each such cam of different contour from the cam grooves of the other cams, a plurality of door moving means each comprising a movable operating member adapted to be moved into and out of driving connection with said movable mastermember, and a pivoted actuating device for each such operating member arranged generally transversely to said master membe' and selecting member, and having an anti-friction roller worliing in the cam groove of the corresponding cam and arranged to be actuated thereby, each operating member having a sliding engagement with its corresponding pivoted actuating device and arranged to be moved by that actuating device, under the influence of the corresponding cam, into and out of engagement with the master member.
