Description

IIEII s MI,
FREDERICK E. GOLDSMITH, 0F HAMILTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO CERAMIC MACHINERY COMPANY, OF HAMILTON, OHIO, 'A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
PROCESS OF COATING TILES AND SIMILAR OBJECTS.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. GOLD- SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Process of Coating Tiles and Similar Objects, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a process for applying coating to vitreous tiles and similar objects. 1
More particularly, it consists in first ap plying to the tiles or similar objects a moist or adhesive coating and then applying pulverized coating material to the moist or adhesive surface.
Further, the invention consists in primarily coating the tiles in the manner above described and then secondarily coating them, and handling them between the two dusting operations in a proper manner so that the first application will not be destroyed or damaged.
In carrying out my process, I first apply to the proper surface of a tile or similar object, usually in the form of an atomized spray, suitable fluid size or other adhesive material. I then dust upon the moist or adhesive surface of the tile, pulverized coating material which adheres to the moist or adhesive surface in considerable quantity. In this way a heavier coating can be applied to the tile for glazing than by previous methods and the glazed product is a moisture-proof or non-adhesive tile of superior quality.
In many cases, a single application of size and coating is not sufficient. In these cases the tiles are conveyed after the first coating steps as above described for a suitable distance or for a suitable length of time, or else they are exposed to heat for a sufiicient time to cause the first application to properly set, and then size is again spread upon the coated surface and another appli- Specification of Letters Patent.

cation of powdered coating material is made to the freshly moistened surface of the tile.
The process may be carried out by hand or by machines differing greatly in construction, and I do not consider it necessary to illustrate any particular form of apparatus.
Reference is here made to applicants copending application, Serial No. 687,295.
I claim:
1. The process of applying to separate, flat objects such as tiles, a fusible coating, said process consisting in presenting tiles successively in horizontal position, in depositing downward upon the upper surfaces of the tiles an atomized fluid and then depositing by gravity upon the moistened surfaces a uniformly distributed pulverized, fusible coating material.
2. The process of applying to tiles and the like a fusible coating, said process consisting in first depositing downward upon the surface of the tiles an atomized fluid, then depositing by gravity upon the moistened surface a suitable quantity of pulverized fusible coating material, then permitting the atom ized fluid to fall upon said surface without disturbing the coating already placed and finally dusting additional pulverized fusible goating material upon the remoistened surace.
3. The process of coating tiles and the like, consisting in first applying to the sur? face of the object atomized fluid, then dusting upon the moist surface a suitable quantity of pulverized coating material, partially drying the coated surface, then permitting atomized fluid to fall upon said surface without disturbing the coating already placed, and finally dusting additional pulverized coating material upon the re-moistened surface.
