BOILER WATER-JACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1916.
Application filed July 28, 1915. Serial No. 42,282.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, GEORGE ALTIMARE and JOHN LOVELL, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Parsons, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Boiler W'ater-Jacket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to steam boilers and its object is to provide a new and improved Water jacket for such boilers to prevent cold drafts from reaching the fiues and fiue sheet with a view to prevent leakage due to sediment, expansion, and contraction.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a casing fitting onto the face of the flue sheet and having thimbles extending therethrough, the inner ends of the thimbles registering with the boiler flues, the said casing being connected by inlet and outlet pipes with the water space of the boiler to cause the water to circulate through the casing.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of the water jacket as applied to a steam boiler, the section being on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2 5 Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of a portion of the water jacket as applied.
The casing A of the water jacket is preferably made of malleable iron or steel and fits onto the face of the flue sheet B of a boiler C of usual construction and having, as shown, small flues D and larger superheating fiues D. The casing A is fastened by stud bolts ljl or like fastening devices, to the flue sheet B, the stud bolts passing through suitable holes F formed in the easing A, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3. The casing A is provided with integral thimbles Gr extending from the face of the casing to a distance beyond the back thereof, the projecting ends G fitting snugly into the corresponding fiues D and D. The casing A is connected near its upper end by a circulating pipe H with the crown sheet I of the boiler C and an outlet pipe J connects the lower end of the casing A with the water leg K of the boiler 0. Thus by the arrangement. described, the interior of the a flue sheet, fiues,
casing A is connected at its upper and lower end with the water space of the boiler C to allow the water to circulate through the said casing A. It will be noticed that the casing A covers the entire surface of the line sheet B and consequently protects the said flue sheet against direct drafts, and the thimbles G protect the entrance ends of the fines D and D against said drafts to prevent cracking of the flue sheet and leak age of the fines. In order to permit of conveniently cleanmg the casing A of any sediment that may accumulate therein, use is made of cleaningout sleeves L arranged at the sides of the casing A and access to which is had by plugs N screwing in the shell of the boiler directly opposite the sleeves L, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. Thus when it is desired to clean out the easing A, the plugs N are removed to permit the introduction of a wash-out hose connected with a suitable water supply. The wash water passes by way of the pipe J into the leg of the boiler, from which the sediment is removed in the usual manner. After the casing has been washed out the plugs N are again placed in position.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A water jacket for steam boilers, comprising a casing constructed to fit throughout its entire extent against the fiue sheet of a boiler, and provided with pipes extending from its upper and lower portions for connection with the crown sheet and water leg of the boiler respectively, and with thimbles extending therethrough, the inner ends of the thimbles projecting beyond the inner face of the casing and adapted to fit in the boiler fiues.
2. The combination with a boiler having a flue sheet, flues, a crown sheet and a water leg, of a casing having its inner face fitting throughout its entire extent against the face of the said flue sheet and having integral thimbles extending from the face of the casing through the casing and a distance beyond the back of the casing, the projecting ends of the thimbles fitting intothe said fines, and inlet and outlet pipes connecting the said casing with the said crown sheet and the said water leg.
3. The combination with a boiler having a crown sheet and a water leg, of a casing having its inner face fitting throughout its entire extent against the face of the said .flue sheet and having intergral thimbles extending from the face of the casing, through the casing and a distance beyond the back of the casing the projecting ends of the thimbles fitting into the said flues, inlet and outlet pipes connecting the said casing With the said crown sheet and the said Water leg, Wash-out sleeves at the sides of the casing and plugs at the sides of the boiler opposite the sleeves.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
