Description
DAVID E. .BO'WN, OF CRAFTQN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ELECTRICAL PLUG.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, DAVID E. BowN, a citi- 'zen of the United States, residing at Crafton, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electrical Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electrical plugs and more particularly to electrical plugs wherein the plug body is surrounded with a metallic. screw shell for insertion within the socket for engaging the necessary contact connected to the supply of electric current from the line.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, imple and efficient form of electricalplug, wherein the screw shell which is used for fostering, may be quickly and conveniently attached or detached from the socket into or from which said plug is intended for use. Thus,.my invention is designed for use, either as a connecting plug or as a fuse. plug, as its principles are .ap-
I plicable to either.
sleeve in section, and my invention applied A further object of my invention is to provide a plug, either attachment plug or fuse plug, wherein the screw shell surrounding the same may be quickly removed or attached to provide for connecting the terminal wires, or to provide for renewin the fuse wire, provided the same has been b own out.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the no vel arrangement, construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described, and par.- ticularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct, use,
and install any improved electrical plug, '1 willdescribe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of any attachment plug, showing the screw shell and insulating thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of the attachment plug, shown in Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow 'A, in Fig. 1, and with the screw shell and insulating sleeve in section. Fig. 3 is a similar view looking in the direction of the arrow B in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the same on the line'4-4 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow C, injsaid figure and with the screw shell and the 1n- Specification of Letters Patent.

sulating sleeve removed. Fig. 5 is a side view of a fuse plug with the screw shell and nsulating shell shown in section, and showing anyinvention applied thereto, also having the top portion of the body invention in,
section to show the construction thereof. Fig. 6 1s a perspective view of the insulating sleeve as used with the fuse plug shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the spring ring employed to secure the screw shell, 1n position as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 lnclusive.
Like symbols of reference herein, indicate like parts meach; of the figures of the draw- 1 ment plug shown in Figs. 1 to 4, consists of a body member 1, which has a head or top portion 2, attaching portion 3, and base portion 1. This main member 1 is formed of any suitable material such as fiber, hard ng- As illustrated in the drawing, the attachrubber or condensite and the attaching portion 3 extends diametrically from the periphery of the base portion 4 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The top portion 2 is provided with a suitable recess 5 for receiving the wires 6 and 7 for connection, to the several terminals provided on said attaching portion 3, leading from-the recess 5 are two holes 8 and 9 through which the'wires 6 and 7 are adapted to pass and said wires after passing through said holes are knotted as at 10 in order to relieve the binding posts of any strain as later explained.
On the side face 11 of the body member 1 is a contact plate 12 which is secured in position by means of-a screw 13 and said contact plate extends around the side of the base portion 4 and is provided with a small semi-circular end 14 which fits into an annular groove 15 as later explained. The side face 16 of the body member 1 is also'provided with a contact plate 17 which is secured in position by means of the screw 18 and said plate extends through a small opening 19 in the base 4 of said body portion and is turned at right angles in order to form the contact 20 for making the necesits in F ig. 1, is provided with the usual metallic screw shell 23 connected at its upper end to a fiber or other ring 24 while the lower end of said shell extends slightly above the upper end. of the annular groove 15 and when said screw shell has been placed around said body member 1 a spring ring 25 is sprung into said annular groove and thus the said screw shell is prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged. This spring ring also engages with the contact plate 12 by passing over the semi-circular end 14- thereof and as the screw shell when screwed intotact plate 12 to pass therethrough to con-' nect with the spring ring 25.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a-fuse plug 29 embodyingmy invention, said plug having a body member 30'which is composed of glass or some other transparent material and such bodymember consists of the observing portion 31 having a heavy flange member 32 around the same and suitable notches 33 on the lower face of said flange for fitting into recesses 34: on the upper end of the screw shell 35 to; prevent said shell from turning upon said body member. The attaching portion 36 of said body member 30 is provided on its-attaching face 37 with a spring contact plate 38 which is secured to said face by the screw 39 and the outer spring end of said contact is adapted td extend through the slot 40 of the insulating sleeve 41 and engage the screw shell 35 at all times. The attaching face 120f said portion 36 is provided with a contact plate 43 which is secured to said face by means of the screw 44 and extends through the opening-45 in the base portion 46 and is turned at right angles against the lower face of said base in order to form the contact 47. The contact plates 38 and 43 are provided with the binding posts 48 and 49 respectively and a fuse wire 50 extends through a hole 51 in the attaching portion 36 and connects by its ends with the said binding posts. The screw shell 35 is secured in position by means of the spring ring 52 which fits into: the annular groove 53 as in the form of i ms aais said groove. It will also be apparent that the chances for short circuits will be mimimized by the construction of the body member as the central attaching portion prevents any electrical connection between the two circuits. i
In the case of the fuse plug shown in Fig. 5 the burnt out fuse can readily be removed and renewed and the parts put 1 together without any great loss of time.
It will, readily be seen that when attachment plugs of the non-swivel type are used,
the contact plate 12 of Fig. 1, may be omitted and the spring contact 38 shown in Fig. 5 may be used in its stead, thereby eliminating the semi-circular end of the contact plate 12, connecting withthe spring ring 25.
Various modifications and changes in the design and construction of my improved plug may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. .A plug for electrical. uses comprising a single integral main member, an annular groove therein, a removable screw shell fitting around said body portion; and means fitting into said .groove and against said shell to prevent the removal thereof.
