ST OVE-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1916.
Application filed June a, 1915. Serial No. 33,142.
'1 (d2 whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE D. OARLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county ofMonroe and State of New York, have inventeda new and Improved Stove-Cover, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stove covers and has reference, also, to the subject matter of l an application filed by me March 23,1915,
Serial No. 16,468.
tove covers of the type to whichmy invention pertains have heretofore usually been made with a channeled opening or pocket within which, and under projections extending thereover, one end of a lifter is inserted when removing" or replacing the cover. These pockets are objectionable for the reason that matter spilled from pots or pans, stove blaclri'ng and dirt accumulates operating with the lifter to insure the latter having a positive hold on the cover and which, when in normal positionyhas its top flush with the upper face of the cover, thereby givinga'better appearance to the top of the stove.
A further object is to form the'pivotal support for this swingingmember integrally with the cover, and to make such swinging member, preferably, in two sections in the manner and for reasons hereinafter set forth.
- I attain these objects in a stove cover such as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,- I V Figures 1 and-'2 are top and bottom plan views, respectively, of the cover drawn to a reduced scale; Fig. 3, a plan view of a portion thereof from the under side showing the opening in which thelifter is inserted; Fig. 4, a sectional view of the cover taken along the line w y of Fig. 1 but with the swinging member removed; Fig. 5, a sectional view similar to Fig. 4 but with the swinging member in place and shown in side view; Fig. 6, a view similar to Fig. 5 but showing I the lifter in engagement with the cover; and
Figs. 7 and 8, plan views showing, with their cooperating engaging surfaces uppermost, the top and bottom sections, respectively, of the swinging member. I

lar parts throughout the several views' A flat circular cover of the type used on a kitchen range is indicated at 1 and has on its under side andnear the periphery the usual downwardly extending annular flange A rectangular opening 3 is formed through the cover, extending inwardly from just Within the flange 2, while extending toward eachother from opposite side walls of such opening and formed integrally with the cover are two oppositely disposed studs or bearingsat. These studs divide the open ing 3 into two parts the side walls of the inner part of which are inclined so that the opening at the bottom is greater in area than at the top while those of the outer part are inclined in the reverse direction I and at a less degree.
Pivotally mounted on the bearings 4 to .swingin and to normally close the opening 3 1s a member 5 formed in two sections 6 and 7, the top section 6 being conformed to fit within such opening and which is of substantially the same thickness as the cover 2. The bottom section 7 is of greater thickness at its outer end and at its inner end has'a semicircular transverse groove 8 therein which, with the similar groove9 in the section 6, forms the opening for 1 receiving the bearings 4. The two'sections'6 and 7 are held together by heading down the end of theiprong 10 which extends downward from the section 6 through a suitable opening therefor in the section 7, and they are held against relative angular displacement by having interlocking. projections formed on their engaging surfaces, as clearly indicated.
The bearings 4 are located, preferably, a little inwardly off center of the opening 3 which, with the added weight given the V outer end of the swinging member 5 by the conformation andposition of the lower section 7 thereof, causes such member to drop by gravity from its openposition, as seen in Fig. 6, to its closed position, as seen in Fig.
.5, with'its top face flush with the upper surface of the cover.
The inclined side walls of the opening 3 prevent the member 5 from being tipped exi formed around the lower edge of the section 7 limits the'degree of rotation, such cept as shown in Fig. 6, and the flange 12 flange also closing the outer portion of the opening 3 from the under" side when the member 5 is in openpositi'on. V
In assembling the cover, the section 6 of the member 5 is inserted through the inner end of the opening 3 from the under side and placed in position, the endsof the bearings 4 being'spaced apartto permit passage therebetween of the prongYlO, after which the section 7 is placed in position Withthe position shown'in Fig. 6 and permitting the end of the lifter to engage under the i The lifter Will engage the under side V COVGI'.
The member 5 normallv lies in the positionshown in Fig. 5, but when it is'desired to raise the-cover-the end of-the lifter 13 is 20 pressed "against the inner end of the memher 5 CZIHSHIO such member to SWlIl to'the of the cover 1 and the top ofthe member 5,
in the manner indicated, while.the lugs 14,
extending outwardly, one on each side of the lifter 13, Will rest on the upper surface s of the cover adjacent the sides of theopening 3, and it Will thus be seen that the cover will be positively held and with practically When the lifter is} removed the member 5 will drop to its closed no dangerof dropping.
