Description
UNITED STATES LEWIS J. ATW OOD, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TC THE PLUME PATENT OFFICE.
& ATWOOD MANUFACTURING COlWPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,421, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEwrs J. ATwooD, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented and .made an Improvement in Lamps 5 and the following is declared to be a correct description thereof:
This invention is an'improvement upon that for which Letters Patent were granted to me April 18, 1871, No. 113,833.
The present improvement relates to a cylindrical barrel containing the screw that operates the wick-raising Wheels, and which barrel is sustained by and revolves upon a :flange around the wick-tube. To this barrel the removable chimney-holder is applied so that the two can be revolved together.
In the drawing, Figure l is a vertical section of the lamp-burner complete. Fig. 2 is a plan ofthe same, with the chimney-holder and barrel removed. Fig. 3 is a plan of the base of the chimney-holder. Fig. 4 is a section, and Fig. 5 a sectional plan of the barrel separately. Fig. 6 is a section, and Fig. 7 a plan lof the screw detached; and Fig. 8 is the ring-ange of the wicktube separately.
The wick-tube a, air-tube b, lateral inlet c, wick-raising wheels d, large screw-collar e, small screw-collar j' are substantially the same as in the aforesaid patent, and do not require further description. Thel cylindrical barrel It is contracted at the upper end to set arromid the wicktube a, and said barrel surrounds a flange, i, that is attached permanently to the said wiektube a. The sheet metal of the barrel h is cut and pressed inward to form the fingers 2 2 that rest upon the ange t to sustain the same in position, and the fingers 3 3 can also be pressed in beneath this lange after the parts are in place to prevent the barrel lifting off, but at the same time it is allowed to turn freely and operate the wick-raising wheels by means ofthe screw that is affixed to the inside of the tube or barrel h. This screw l is preferably made of triangular wire wound into a coil, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and then inserted into the barrel h and secured by solder. The chimney-rest m is made with corrugations, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, so that there will be inlets for air between the chimney and its rest, and upon this rest is the springholder u for receiving the chimney. This chimney-rest and holder are supported by the air-distributer r and surround the barrel h, and can be lifted oft' to give access to the wick for trimming or lighting. There are ribs 5 5 upon the barrel h, and notches 6 G in the chimney-rest m, so that the barrel h can be revolved for raising or lowering the wick by turning the chimney-rest and holder.
This lamp is easily constructed, strong, cheap, and durable.
I claim as my invention- 1. The barrel h, containing the screw Z and supported by the ring-flange i around the wicktube a, substantially as set forth.
2. The corrugated chimney-rest surrounding the Vbarrel h, but removable therefrom, in combination with the wick-raising Wheels d, screw l, and barrel h, substantially as set forth.
3. Thev screw Z made of the triangular wire coiled and soldered within the barrel h, as set forth.
Signed by me this 6th day of June, A. 111871.
L. J. ATWOOD.
