To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WAREN M. TIPPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carbon Hill, in the county ofWalker and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Washers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in coal washers and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby water is intermittently forced through the coal. to separate the rock therefrom, and whereby the separated coal and rock are separately discharged.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide-a'device of'this general character including a perforate member upon which the coal to be separated. is initially delivered together with means for causing an, even distribution of the coal upon said member in order to facilitate the separation thereof by water forced through the perforate member. A still furtherobject of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the quantity of water intermittently forced through a perforated member for separating the coalmay be readily regulated in accordance with the quantity or size of the coal to be separated.
The invention also has for an object to provide a device of this general character whereinwater is employedfor the separation of the coaland stone and wherein the separated coal and stone are delivered into difl'erent discharge chutes, together with novel'and' improved means whereby a predetermined amount of rock is automatically delivered to the rock chute. I p 1 I It is also an object of the invention to provide novel andimprovedmeans whereby the coal and rock may be forced outwardly relative to their respective chutes, said means being preferably operated through the medium of the means, whereby the water is intermittently forced through the perforate element upon which the coal to be separated is initially deposited.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved coal washer whereby. certain impor;
tant advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the -better understood, I will now. proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through a washer constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the coacting bin being shown in elevation; Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1, with the bin removed; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view illustrating the inlet ports coacting with the cylinder as herein employed; Fig. 5 is a detail view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating certain features of the crank as herein included; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken through the upper end of Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is a detail view in perspective illustrating certain features of the rock gate as herein embodied.
As disclosed inthe accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a tank of predetermined dimensions and configurations and adapted to be substantially entirely filled with water, the normal level of the water being in- .dicated by the dotted line a, and disposed longitudinally of the tank 1 from one end thereof and suitably spaced from the bottom sides and top of the tank is the cylinder 2, preferably rectangular in form having its inner end closed, as at 3, and provided with the ports 4 with which coact the check valves 5, whereby retrograde flow of water through said ports 4 is prevented. The ports 4 are in communication with a hopper 6 in longitudinal alinement with the cylinder 2 and having the inclined bottom 7 disposed upwardly in a direction away from the inner end of the cylinder 2, so thatthe water forced within the'hopper 6 through the ports 4' will be directed upwardly through the perforate partition or member 8, intersecting the hopper 6 at a point above the cylinder 2, and disposed on an incline reverse to the inclination of the bottom 7.
Discharging upon the perforate partition or member 8 is a bin 9, the discharge opening 10 for the bin being in a side face thereof and under control of the vertically movable valve or gate 11, said gate being of such a weight as to normally remain in a closed position by gravity, and intermitte'ntly and automatically adjusted into an open position in a manner to be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
Disposed transversely of the hopper 6 adj acent its upper end and in a predetermined spaced relation relatively to the partition or perforate member 8, is an inwardly bowed member 12 which serves to evenly distribute the coal discharged from the bin 9 upon the partition or member 8, so that more effective separating action may be afforded by the water as forced upwardly through said partition or member 8. I The forward end of the hopper 6 has in communication therewith the transversely disposed chute 14 into which the coal as floated by the water is discharged, said chute being arranged on a predetermined incline in order to deliver the coal to the longitudinally disposed delivery chute 15, with which coacts the ram 16 for forcing the coal delivered to the chute 15 outwardly thereof so that said coal may be properly discharged.
The inclined partition or member 8 delivers the rock or slate upon the rock' gates 17 normally maintained in a closed or vertical position through the medium of theweights 18, said weights, as herein embodied, being secured to the flexible members 19 passing over suitable guide rollers 20 and terminating in the branches 21, se-
cured to each ofthe gates 17, whereby it will "be perceived that as the quantity of rock or slate delivered upon the gates 17 is of a weight in excess of the weights 18 and its coacting parts, the gates will automatically open and discharge the collected stone or rock upon the lower end of the upwardly and forwardly directed chute 22, said rock or slate being forced upwardly of the chute 22 through the medium of the ram 23 reciprocated in a manner to be hereinafter more 42 the outer end of the-rod being operatively engaged with the cross head 28 operating in suitable guides 29 and with which is pivotally engaged the pitman 30 having its outer end operatively engaged with the driven shaft, 31, coupled with any desired source of power.
H As herein disclosed, the shaft 31 comprises two sections, A and B, having their.
adjacent extremities angularly disposed, as at 32 said portions 32 being parallel and in predetermined spaced relation and provided with the longitudinally disposed slots 33 of a length substantially equal to the length of the extensions 32. Each of the slots33 has its longitudinal walls provided with the i transversely alined recesses 34,'each series of recesses being spaced apart a predete'rmined distance longitudinally of the ex tensions 32 and is adapted to receive a bearing 35' for the cross pin 36, whereby it will be perceived that the extensions 32 and cross the requisite thrust to the pitman 30, it being understood that said itman 30 is loosely engaged with the cross pin 36.- It will be readily perceived that the recesses34 permit an adjustment of the cross pin 36 relatively to the extensions32, whereby the length of the stroke of the pitman '30 may be varied in accordance witlrthe quantity or size of the coal delivered upon the partition or member 8. j
Suitably fixed to the rod 27 within'the cylinder 2 is the head 37 provided with the i pin 36 afford a crank member for imparting ports or'o'penings 38 therein, with which 00- 1 act the check valves 39foperating in'a similarmanner as the check valves 5 'hereinbeif fore referred to, and whereby it will be perceiv'ed that as the rod 27 is moved inwardly, water within "the cylinder 2 will be forced through the ports 41and upwardly through will also beperceived that upon the inward stroke of the rod 27 water will be drawn within the cylinder 2- through the ports 40 arranged at the outer end of the" cylinder 2 the perforated partition or member 8. It 1 in the opposite sides thereof and adjacent the bottom thereof, said ports 40 opening into the laterally directed boxes 41 carried by the side walls of the cylinder 2 and having produced in their upper faces the ports Mounted within each of the'boxes' 41*is a flat valve 43 which opens inwardly during the inward movement of the h'ead37 and permits water to be drawn within the cylinder 2 and closes upon the outward move ment of the head'37. It will be perceived that u on the outward movement of the head '3 the valves 5 will be adjusted into 1 closed position and the valves39 carried'by the head 37 will permit unobstructed travel of the head 37 during its return movement.
The inner end of the rod 27 has ivotally engaged therewith the link 44 whidli is disposed throu h a suitableslot 45 producedin the bottom 7 of the hopper 6, and said link 44 is'also pivotally engaged to the inner end 1 30 of the ram 23, whereby it will be perceived that said ram is reciprocated in unison with the rod 27 The cross head 28 is provided with an extension 4=6 to which is aflixed an upstanding arm 47 having pivotally engaged therewith the rod 48 which is also pivotally engaged with the inner end of the coal ram 16, whereby it will be perceived that the requisite reciprocation will be imparted to the ram 16. As herein disclosed, the ram 16 is mounted within the inner end of the chute l5 and it is to be noted that the head 37 coacts with a track 49 positioned longitudinally of the cylinder 2 at opposite sides thereof, said head being cut away, as at 50, to receive said tracks.
The rod 48 has affixed thereon at a predetermined point intermediate its length, the collar 51 to which is secured an extremity of a flexible member 52 which passes over the suitably positioned guide rollers 53 carried by the bin 9 and secured to the upper margin of the gate or valve 11, whereby it will be perceived that during the inward stroke of the rod 27, coal will be discharged upon the partition or member 8 and that upon the reverse movement of the rod 27, the gate or valve 11 will close, whereby it will be perceived that the coal is intermittently discharged upon the partition or member 8 during predetermined periods.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a coal washer rangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a bin, a substantially horizontally disposed perforate partition intersecting the bin, a discharge chute coacting with the hopper, a ram coacting with the chute, means for reciprocating the ram, a bin discharging within the hopper, a valve for controlling the discharge from the bin, and an operative connection between the valve and the ram whereby the valve is adjusted into open position during the outward thrust of the ram.
