Application med August 22, 1914. Ysve'ria1 No. 855;,105.A
To @ZZ/whom t may concern. Y d
Be it known that I, GEORGE lALFRED RATH- BUN, a citizen of ther-United States, fresiding at Coalinga, in the county of lFresno Yand State ofv California, have invented a newand useful Glass Pump, ofV which the following is aspecilication. A
Thedevice forming thek subject matterof this application is a pump adapted to` be employed upon Artesian and oil wells.
- One object of the present inventionzis to provide ya pump of the ltype described in 'whichthe liner of the barrel and `thefjacket of the pistonv or plunger are fashioned from glass. Y y Y t Another object of the invention is to provide a pump Vembodying a construction which Vwill makey possible the usefof glass in the formation Vof the elements above `mentioned.
Another object'iof the invention is to provide/.a pump embodying means vwhereby an increment yof the material handled by the 4 'pump vmay be permitted to enter between the vcasing and the liner 'of' the pump barrel, thereby to form a sustaining cushion.
Itis within the scope of the invention to vimprove generally and to enhance the utility yof devices of that type to which the present invention apperta'ins. i
Withl the aboveand'other obJects in view,
which will appear'as the description prolc'eeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details ofv construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed` without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the accompanying drawings -Figure v1 shows in vertical longitudinal section, a
pumpembodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is across section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a fragmental longi- Y tudinal sectional vdetail enlarged from Fig.
1; Fig. 5 is across section on the line'5-r5 ofFig. l. Y
The barrel of the pumpl herein disclosed comprises a `casing 1v which'v preferably is made ofmetal. The casing 1 of the pump barrel is of tubular'construction and located in the casing is a tubular liner 2 which preferably is made of glass. rThe liner 2 is -made of glass.
spaced from the casing l, as indicated at 11.v Threadedor otherwise secured to the vlower end of thecasing 1 is a cap 3, comprising an'upstanding flange 4 toV which the casing 1 is immediately secured. The cap 3 lncludes a depending flange '5. The cap is centrally open vas indicated at 6. The lower yendzofvthefliner 2 abuts against the cap 3 and thus the cap 3 forms a closure for the lower end of the space 11 existing between the casing andthe liner. An upper cap 7 is provided, the cap 7 being equipped intermediate its ends with an inwardly extended AH ange 8 against which the upper end of the 'liner 2. abuts,` the cap being shouldered as ylndicatedlat) tov receive the upper end of the casing l.k vThe cap v7 embodies adependlngflange 12 to which the casing lis threaded, the cap including an upstanding iange 14 having a threaded connection with the tubing 15 ofthe well. In the transverse flange- 8 ofthe cap 7 are formeda plurality of'not'ches 10. These notches 10 give access to the space 11 between thecasing 1 and the liner-2 so that, when the'piston of the pump is 1n operation, oil, sand, or other mafisc terial handled by the pump may find its 7 way between the casing 1 and the liner 2 to 'serve as' a cushion f between these"elements.- The material'thus located is' indicated bythe reference character 32.
The novelty `in the present invention resides essentially in the pump barrelv and in "the'lpiston and it will therefore be understood that any form of foot-valve may be employed. v In the present instance, and by t way of illustration, a tube 16 is threaded mto the flange 5 of the lower cap '3 and threaded to the lower end of the tube 16 is a foot 17 into which is threaded a cage 18 carrying a ball valve 19. Fixed to and upstandingfrom the cage 18 is a rod 20. However, vas hereinbefore stated, any form of Vfoot-valve may be employed. v
The plunger or piston of the pump is a composite structure and embodies a tubular core 21, preferably fashioned from metal. Surrounding the core 21 is a tubular jacket 22 embracing the core closely and preferably A washerv 23, ordinarily made of metal, surrounds the lower portion of the tubular core 21 and forms an abutment for the lower end of the jacket 22. A nut 24 is threaded onto the lower end of the core 21 and holds the washer 23 in place, theV nut 24 yhavingan opening 25 Ithrough the rod 2O passes, the opening 25l being of considerably greater diameter than the rod 20, in order to vpermit "the material which is operated upon to pass readily through` the plunger or piston when the latter dis re.
' ciprocated. The upper end 26 of the ,core 21 of the ypiston `upsta'nds above the upper end Y atransverse shoulder 28 which engages .the
of the jacket 22. Threaded ,ontosthe end portion 26 of the core 21 is a nut 27 having upper lend of .the core 21; -Threaded or otherwise secured to :the 4exterior-:of the lnut 27 is a cage 29 containing a .ball valve 80700- operating with 1a valve seat .50 bound ibetween the lnut and the zcagef v Y The lnumeral '3 1 4indicates .anywsuitable Vmeans for imparting a V:reciprocat-lng motion to the plunger or piston.
So far as the general operation of: the
pump herein disclosed is concerned, it willY be understood that wihenthe piston moves' downwardly, the valve 219 will Aclose and the valve 130 will open, and, when VV`the piston moves upwardly, the valve 13() will closeand the valve 19 will open. The function of the rod 20 is to unseat the valve 30 atthe-ex- -tremity of .the downward strokeol:l the pis- `ton, should the valve 30 be stuck in its seat.V
` cates. The jacket 22 of the piston and the liner` 2 .of the pump barrel, being made o1. glass, will not score-.or wear lrapidly, underl .the Iattrition .of vthe materialwh-ich is handled. The general construction 'is such than ments. hereinbefore referred to specically.
