To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAsMUs NIELSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lemon-Squeezers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to improvements in lemon squeezers.
The object of the invention is to provide a convenient, simple, and economical portable lemon squeezer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a'structure which will squeeze a lemon with as littleapplied effort as possible.
The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of a lemon squeezer constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a transverse section taken through the plunger and cup.
1 indicates a base on which is fastened a frame 2, comprising a top 3, and two sides 4:, the lower ends of the latter being fastened to the base 1. In the top 3 is formed an opening 5, and fitting therein is a cup 6. On the periphery of the cup is an annular flange 7, which rests on the top 3, surrounding the opening 5, while the bottom of thecup is conveXed and ribbed, and is also perforated. On the top 3, inrear of the cup, is a projection 8, formed on its front edge with a hook 9. The projection 8, acts as a guide for the cup when placing the latter in the opening 5.
Located under the top 3, and below the cup, is a spout 10. The spout is formed of sheet metal and comprises an inclined bottom 11, beveled at the front end, and 1s provided with upturned side and end'portions 12 and 13. The front of theside portions 12, are bent inwardly and forwardly to form a restricted outlet, and the top edges of said sides are straight to engage the under side of the top 3.

will be noted from the drawings, the spout 1s confined between the support 17 and the under side of the top 3. When the spout is forced rearwardly on the support 17, and the operator fails to push it far enough in, to properly seat it, in fitting the cup in its opening 5,'the outer edge will contact with the rear end 13, and move the spout until the latteris in its proper position under the cup. This action insures the spout being in place to catch the juice when squeezing a lemon.
Pivotally mounted on a rod 18, supported in the sides 4:, of the frame 2, are the forwardly projecting side bars 19, of a bail 20, the cross bar 21 of which forms a support for a hand grip 22. The side bars may be held on the rod by cotter pins or like devices 24.
Pivoted to the side bars 19, at 25, forwardly of the rod 18, are two upwardly pros jecting links 26. Connecting the upper ends of the links 26, is a rod 27, and pivotally supported thereon, adjacent links 26, are two links 28, the rear ends of which are pivoted to the sides 4, at 29, above and in rear of the rod 18. i
Loosely supported on the rod 27, is a plunger 30, concaved on its under side and provided with ribs 31, to assist in grasping and holding the lemon in the squeezing operation. Extending "upwardly from the plunger is a horizontal rib 31, and extending upwardly beyond the central portion of the same are two lugs 32, which loosely embrace the rod 27, and which afford means for the insertion of a cotter pin 32 to conbottom of the plunger will not quite contact with the bottom of the cup. Hence the skin of the lemon will not be squeezed, the sleeves being provided to limit the downward movement of the plunger forthis' purpose. i
When the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 3, a lemon is placed in the cup, and
the head grip is pressed down. The downward movement of the bail exerts a pull on the links 26, hence the rod 27 acts on the plunger to lower same into the cup. The links 28 simply act to cause the rod 27 and the plunger to travel in a curved path, as
cup, the whole lemon has been thoroughly subjected to a squeezing action, and consequently all the available'juice is extracted. In this connection it may be stated that the rib 31* extends entirely across the plunger to aflord an extended bearing surface for the rod to thereby obtain all possible power and to extend this power throughout the transverse area of the plunger in the squeezing operation. When the bail 20 is raised, the plunger will also be raised, and in order to prevent the latter, assuming a position which would preclude it, fitting in the cup upon the next operation, the hook 9, of the projection is so disposed that it acts as a stop, as shown in Fig. 3. By this means the lower edge of the plunger, when the parts are in open position, will be inside of the inner edge of. the cup, so that when the device is subsequently operated, the path of the plunger will be unobstructed.
From the foregoing. description it is evident I have provided a simple and eflicient device for theipurpose described. The arrangement of the parts is such that great leverage is obtained, and therefore the I lemon is effectually squeezed and all the available juice is obtained. The spout will support the pulp in that the forward edges of the spout will prevent the pulp following the juice, should the latter be suflicient to move it. i I
It is obvious the cup plunger and spout may be conveniently removed for cleaning purposes.
What I claim is 1. In a lemon squeezer, the combination ofa frame having a top formed with an opening,.a perforated cup mounted in the opening,a plunger cooperating with the cup,
a bail pivoted to the frame, a; pair of links pivoted to the sides of the bail, a rod extending through the upper ends of the links and across the plunger, means for loosely mounting the plunger on the rod, a second pair of links mounted on the rod adjacent the first mentioned pair of links, the second mentioned pair of links being pivoted to the frame in rear of and above the plane of the pivots of the bail, and a spout supported under the top of the frame and held in position by the cup. 2. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame having a top formed with an opening, a perforated cup fitted in the opening, said cup having a flange which is supported on the top, a spout mounted under the cup, a support secured to the frame to receivethe cup, said spout being held in position by the cup, a plunger cooperating with the cup, a system of levers and a rod for op erating the plunger, means for loosely connecting the plunger to the rod, and means for limiting the movement of the plunger in both directions.
3. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame formed with a top having an opening, a perforated cup mounted in the opening, a spout supported under the perforated cup, a bail pivoted to the frame, a plunger cooperating with the perforated cup, said plunger having a rib extending substantially across the whole of its transverse area and having av pair of lugs extending upwardly beyond the rib, a rod supported on the rib and confined between the lugs, means for retaining the rod in position, two pairs of links pivotally mounted on the rod, one pair of links having its rear end pivoted to the frame and the other pair of links having its lower ends pivoted to the bail, and means for limiting the movement of the plunger when in raised position to position its lower edge inside the plane of the edge of the cup. 7
4. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame, a bail pivoted to the frame, a pair of links pivoted at theirlower ends to the bail, a rod mounted in the upper ends of the links, a second pair of links pivoted on the rod and having their lower ends pivoted to the frame, a perforated cup supported on the frame, a plunger loosely. mounted on the rod and cooperating with the cup, sleeves mounted on the rod, said sleeves being confined between the links and the plunger and engaging the upper edge of the cup when the plunger is operated to prevent said plunger contacting with the bottom of the cup, and means on the frame for limiting the movement of the plunger'when the latter is in raised position.
5. In a lemon squeezer, the combinatioi'l of a frame, a perforated cup supported by the frame, a plunger cooperating with the plunger cup, a bail pivoted to the sides of the frame, a pair of links pivoted at their lower ends to the bail in advance of the pivotal connection between the bail and frame, a second pair of links having their lower ends pivoted to the frame in rear and above the plane of the pivotal connection of the bail, a rod to which the upper ends of all the links are pivotally connected, means for loosely pivoting the plunger to the rod, and l means for regulating the movement of the plunger in the cup in the squeezing operation.
6. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame formed with an opening in its top, a perforated cup mounted in the opening, said cup having a flange which rests on the top of the frame, a support secured to the underside of the top, a spout having an inclined bottom resting on the support, said spout having flanges at its sides and rear, the cup engaging the rear flange to hold the spout in position under the cup, a plunger cooperating with the cup, a rod extending across the plunger, means loosely supporting the plunger on the rod, a bail pivoted to the frame, a system of levers between the bail, frame and rod to raise and lower the plunger, and a projection on the top of the frame against which the plunger contacts to position it inside the plane of the edge of the cup when said plunger is in raised position.
7 In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame formed with an opening, a perforated plunger cup mounted in the opening, a spout detachably mounted in the frame below the plunger cup, a plunger cooperating with the plunger cup, a rod extending across the plunger, means for loosely connecting the plunger to the rod, links pivoted to the rod and to the frame, a system of connected levers for operating the links to raise and lower the plunger, certain of said levers being pivoted to the frame,and means for limiting the movement of the plunger toward and away from the plunger cup.
8. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame, a plunger cup having an outlet opening and supported in the frame, a plunger cooperating with the plunger cup, a rod loosely connected to the plunger, a pair of links pivoted to the rod and to the frame, a pivoted operating handle, and means between the operating handle'and the pair of links to raise andlower the plunger in the plunger cup.
9. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame having a plunger cup formed with an outlet opening, a plunger cooperating with the plunger cup, said plunger having a bearing surface on its upper side, a rod engaging said bearing surface, means for loosely connecting the plunger to the rod, links pivotally connecting the rod and the frame, limiting stops on the rod between the plunger and the links, and a system of levers for operating the rod to raise and lower the plunger in the plunger cup.
10. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame, a plunger cup having an outlet opening and supported in the frame, a plunger cooperating with the plunger cup, a rod loosely connected to the plunger, means for supporting the rod to cause the plunger to travel in the arc of a circle toward and from the plunger cup, means for operating the first mentioned means, and means for limiting the movement of the plunger in two directions.
11. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame, a perforated plunger cup supported in the frame, a plunger cooperating with the plunger cup, a rod loosely connected to the plunger, means for supporting the rod to cause the plunger to travel in the arc of a 'circle toward and from the plunger cup, means for operating the first mentioned means, a detachable spout supported in the frame below the perforated plunger cup, said spout being held in position in the frame by said cup, and means for limiting the movement of the plunger in two directions.
12. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame, a plunger cuphaving an outlet opening and mounted in the frame, a plunger cooperating with the plunger cup, a rod at the top of the plunger cup, means for loosely connecting the plunger to the rod, a swinging support pivoted to the frame and connecting with the rod whereby when, the swinging support is elevated the lower end of theplunger will be in position to engage the cup when said plunger is operated, and means for operating the swinging support.
13. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame, a perforated plunger cupmount ed in the frame, a plunger cooperating with the plunger cup, a rod at the top of the plunger cup, means for loosely connecting the plunger to the rod, a swinging support pivoted to the frame and connecting with the rod, whereby when the swinging support is elevated the lower end of the.
plunger will be in position to engage the cup when said plunger is operated, a bail pivoted to the frame, and links pivoted to the bail and connected to the rod.
14. In a lemon squeezer, the combination of a frame, a plunger cup having an outlet opening and mounted on the frame. a plunger cooperating with the cup, a swinging frame to which the plunger is loosely connected, an operating lever, a pivoted connection between the swinging frame and the operating lever, and a guide to limit the upward movement of the plunger and cause same to enter the plunger cup when said plunger is lowered.
