'ADJUSTABLE LAMP- -SHADE.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patfited lvlay 16, 1916.
Application filed January 2, 1915;. Serial 110.;141.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES G. LANDnRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cement. in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Lamp-Shades; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable lamp shades of the type which are arranged to shield a portion of an electric lamp and resides in the provision of a shade which may be adjusted so that the light from a lamp may be prevented issuance at various points.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for detachably securing and ad justably supporting a shield or shade relative to a lamp, said means being adjustable relative to the lamp and having a shield or i shade adjustably secured thereto.
Another object of importance is to generally simplify lamp shades of the above mentioned character so as to render them more practical and efficient without increasing the cost of manufacture thereof.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim.
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my im proved shade showing it attached to an electric lamp, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my shade, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal'sectional view taken online 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, A designates an electric lamp mounted within a socket B of the ordinary character. A socket clamp is detachably mounted upon the socket B and comprises a preferably cylindrical body 1 which carries at its ends laterally extending spaced ears 2. The ears 2 are provided with alined screw threaded apertures to receive an adjusting thumb screw 3.
The clamp 1 carries a shield or shade supporting, frame which comprises outwardly and. downwardly extending arms 1 and 5 that are carried by the clamp 1, arranged on opposite sides thereof and preferably formed integral with the clamp. These arms are arrangedto engage the opposite sides of the bulb or globe of the lamp and at their lower ends are curved inwardly as at 6 so as to conform to the curvature of the globe.
Carried on the lower ends of the arms 1 and 5 are offset parallel and right angularly extending ears 7 which are spaced from the lower end of the bulb or globe and are formed with alined screw threaded apertures which receive a thumb screw 8. In having the arms 4 and 5 adjustably connected at their lower ends it will be seen that the frame maybe adjusted to engage upon an electric lamp of various sizes. The arms 4 and 5 are preferably formed of spring metal. v
Slidably mounted upon either of the arms 1 or 5 is a concavo-convex approximately oval shield or shade 9 that may be formed of any suitable opaque material. This shield 9 is of less transverse and longitudinal extent than the transverse and longitudinal extent of the bulb or globe of the lamp and is of such shape as to conform to the contour of the lamp. An offset sleeve 10 is carried at the upper end of the shield or shade 9 and slidably receives the arm 5. The shield 9 is adjustable vertically relative to the arm 5 or frame and is held in adjusted position by means of a thumb screw 11 which is carried by the sleeve 10 and arranged to engage the arm which is received in said sleeve.
It will be seen that my improved shade may be readily adjusted to fit electric lamps of various sizes and can be easily attached. The frame comprising the arms 4 and 5 also the clamp 1 may be rotatably adjusted rela- -tive to the socket B and lamp to bring. the.
shield or shade 9 at the desired point. The shield or shade 9 is vertically adjustable relative to the arms or frame and it will be seen that the light rays from the lamp may be prevented issuance at various points.
In use, the clamp 1 is secured to the socket B and by adjusting the arms 4: and 5 an electric lamp of any size may be turned in the socket in the ordinary manner. without interference. After the lamp A is screwed into the socket the shield 9 is adjusted to the desired point and the arms 4 and 5 may be forced apart or drawn toward one another as desired by rotating the thumb,
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eificient and practical; yetrealizing that the conditions concurrent With the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be re sorted to, when required, Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as claimed. I
What is claimed is A lamp shade forvelectric lamps comprising a clamp to be rotatably and detachably secured to a lamp socket, a pair of depending spring arms carried by said clamp, said arms shaped to conform to the curvature of a globe, and arranged to engage the opposite sides of the globe, ears formed on the free ends of said arms, said ears being parallel and extending at right angles to said arms, adjusting means mounted in said ears to permit the arms to be adjusted upon globes of various sizes, and a concavo convex shield adjustably secured to one of said arms.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
