Description

E, BQHAYES. Y Improveinent in'Cutter Heads.
N0. 11853675, Patented Aug. 22, 1871l UNITED STATES ELI B. HAYES, OF VERGENNES, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CUTTER-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,365, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI B. HAYES, of Vergennes, in the county of Addison and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter-Heads and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
rI he nature of my invention consists in the construction of knives made for cutting ogee or bevel or any desired form for work on doors, sash, blinds, and moldings; and also in the construction of the head and method of securing the knives to it, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side view of my cutter-head and knives.
A A represent the knives, which are constructed in the following manner: The desired form is cut on the face of the knife along its entire length in such a manner that, being ground at any desired bevel on vthe other side, the cutting-edge Vwill retain the same form until the knife is used up too shortrto work. The object of this is to preserve a uniformity in the Work done by the knives, whether cutting ogees, bevels, or groov- Aing, or in running moldings, Sac., by avoiding the liability to change the shape of the knife or cutter at each time of grinding or sharpening. B represents the head, which is provided with grooves b b to fit the knives, and beveled grooves a a are formed on the inner edge of the knives. A plate, C, grooved to match, is fitted over them, and the Whole rmly secured by bolts D D, the face of the pla-te C being thus made flush with the edge of the cutters.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The knives A A, secured to the head B by means of the grooved plate C fitting in the bev eled grooves on the knives, and fastened to the head by bolts D D, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of June, 1871.
vitnesses: E. B. HAYES.
