ELECTRICAL WINDING.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. WooL- DRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical WVindings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electrical windings of solid disk coils, particularly to such windings of this type as are used in core type power transformers.
The object of my invention is to provide a winding of this type having better ventilating characteristics than those heretofore known.
A disk coil winding of the type to which my invention relates is essentially a winding made up of a plurality of solid 0011s of closely wound conductors, generally more or less thin, assembled side by side, and separated from each other to provide spaces for the escape of the heat developed in the coils. Commonly the cooling fluid of such a winding flows over the outer surface of the winding and through a central ventilating space therein in the general direction of the winding axis. Prior to my invention the coils were commonly made sub stantially flat, and hence the spaces between them were perpendicular to the axis of the winding, and to the general direction of the cooling fluid. In such a construction there is some tendency for the cooling fluid between the coils to remain stationary at the coil surfaces.
In windings embodying my invention the coils are still substantialy disk coils, but they are also dished, that is, they are shaped like hollow truncated cones with walls of substantially uniform thickness. These coils are assembled substantially like the flat disk coils, a central ventilating space being left through the winding in the direction of its axis so that the cooling fluid may circulate over both the inside and outside surfaces of the winding. In addition to this circulation, however, the inclination of the spaces between the coils to the wind ing axis due to the shapes of the coils, induces a circulation of the fluid therein, thus increasing the radiation of heat therefrom.

formers and reactances cooled by natural circulation, it will probably find its greatest usefulness in such embodiments and its general application may readily be understood therefrom; I shall therefore for the sake of simplicity confine the following description to such embodiments of my invention.
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of such a transformer or reactance embodying one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of a similar transformer or reactance in which my invention is embodied in a slightly different form.
Each winding, or portion of the winding of the transformer or reactance of Fig. 1 it will be seen, is composed of coils 10 which are substantially disk coils; these are separated by the spacers or separators 11 to provide the Ventilating spaces between the coils as is common. These coils, however, in accordance with my invention, are dished so that they resemble truncated cones as will be apparent from this figure, the small ends being upward. The direction of each ventilating space between coils has there fore a vertical component, the upward inclinations of the spaces being toward the interior of the winding. In this particular instance each coil consists of two sections 12 and 13 separated by a layer of insulation 14, but this is immaterial to my invention. Through the center of the winding passes the core 15 surrounded by the insulating barriers 16 which are however separated from the interior surfaces of the coils to provide the central ventilating spaces. These spaces communicate with the ventilating spaces between the coils. At the two ends of each stack of coils are the caps 17 and 18 between which the coils are clamped by the rods 19.
With the transformer or reactance of In Fig. 2 the coils are reversed from their positions of Fig. 1 so that the upward slope of the ventilating spaces between the coils is outward rather than inward. The flow 01": the insulating fluid, however, occurs as Well between the coils as over the inner and outer surfaces of the winding.
While I have described the principle of my invention and the best mode I have contemplated for applying this principle, other modifications will occur to those skilled in this art and I aim in the appended claims to cover all modifications Which do not involve a departure from the spirit and scope of my invention.

1. An electrical Winding provided with a central ventilating space. extending in the j? direction of the axis thereof and comprising a plurality of solid dished disk coils of closely Wound conductors, the coils being spaced from each other to provide ventilat ing spaces communicating with the central ventilating space.
2. A self-cooled vertically extending electri-cal Winding provided with a vertical central ventilating space and comprising a plurality of solid dished disk coils of closely Wound conductors, the coils being arranged one above another and spaced from each other to provide ventilating spaces communicating With the central ventilating space.
3. The combination of an electrical Winding comprising a plurality of solid dished disk coils of closely Wound conductors, and a central member extending through and in the "direction of the axis oi. the windingiand spaced therefrom to provide a central ventilating space for the Winding, the coils be ing spaced from each other to provide ventilating spaces communicating With the central ventilating space.
