2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- lm/themes UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. MEROZ, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATCH.
Application filed. April 15, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN r. Mnnoz, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at lValtham, in the county of MiddlescX and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to watches designed more particularly as a novelty device to be used and sold at the proposed Panama EX- position, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a watch in which a plurality of ships are shown at various times passing through the Panama Canal and making a trip from New York to San Francisco.
Another object of the invention is to provide a watch in which a disk is connected to the hour wheel and provided with a plurality of pictorial illustrations on the face thereof of steamships or other water-craft, said steamships being seen through a curved opening in the dial of the watch and appearing at intervals in a trip between New York city and San Francisco.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a face view of a watch made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the ring or disk carrying the pictorial representation of steamships connected to the hour wheel of a watch, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 38 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary underside plan view of a portion of the hour wheel and the ring or disk connected thereto.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a watch case which may be of any suitable size, contour and material, and it is to be understood that the watch movement may be of any suitable type or character and that this invention may be applied to watches as at present constructed.
The hour hand wheel 2 of the watch or time-piece is provided with an annular recess upon its upper face and secured firmly in this recess is a metal ring or disk 3, said ring extending beyond the gear teeth 4 of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
Serial No. 832,012.
the hour wheel as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. On the upper face of the ring 3, which may be enameled, is the representation of a plurality of steamships 5, four being shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The ring 3 being connected to the hour wheel 2 will make one revolution in twelve hours, but it is within the scope of this invention to attach the ring 3 to the minute-hand wheel so that the ships will be shown rotating at a more rapid rate.
The minute-hand is indicated by the character a and the hour-hand by b. The dial 6 is provided with a curved sight opening or slot 7 and it has a solid'portion at the end of the said slot or opening and the pictorial illustrations of the steamships 5 are curved on their outer sides as at 8 to conform to the radius of sight opening 7. On the dial is a map representing North and South America, indicated by the numerals 10 and 11 and the sight opening 7 intersects the two countries at a point representing the Panama Canal. At the upper end of the sight opening 7 the city of New York is indicated at 12 while at the opposite end of the sight opening is represented the city of San Francisco at 13. The hours are indicated by the words Panama Canal beginning at P representing the hour of twelve, as shown at let.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that there are always two or more of the steamships in sight through the sight openings 7 and that as they pass San Francisco on the way to New York they are out of sight underneath the dial 6.
The invention is comparatively simple in construction, can be connected to any watch movement, and will become very interesting to persons visiting the exposition as it will serve as a souvenir of utility.
Various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
What is claimed is The hereindescribed timepiece including a dial provided between its center and its periphery with a substantially arcuate slot arranged approximately concentric with the periphery of the dial, the latter being provided with a solid portion between the ends exposed to View throughout the length of of the slot, an hour wheel mounted for rotathe slot.
tion on an axis coincident with the center Intestimony whereof I afiix my signature of the dial and a flat ring secured to the in presence of two witnesses.
hour wheel and arranged at the inner face of JOHN A. MEROZ. the dial and exposed through the said slot whereby figures displayed on the said ring may be caused to travel around the dial and Vitnesses HOWARD E. COLE, CHARLES G. STEVER.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner 0! Patents, Washington, D. C.
