VENT-CONTROLLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 26, 1915. Serial No. 10,805.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. OI-IALUPA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baldwin, in the county of St. Croix and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vent-Con trollers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pumps and has for its object to provide a novel attachment to be used in connection with pumps to prevent water freezing therein.
Another object is to provide novel and efficient means for closing the vent in the pump tube or cylinder.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing. in which:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an ordinary pump illustrating the attachment applied to use thereon. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged fragmental view, partly in section, of the lower portion of the pump tube or cylinder and attachment therefor. Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. and Fig. 4 represents a perspective View of the washer or packing removed.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several. views, the numeral 5 indicates the upper portion of a pump of ordinary or any preferred construction, including the pump cylinder or tube 6 in which the piston (not shown) is mounted. An opening or vent 7 is formed through the tube 6 above the piston (not shown), and an attaching member 8 is secured upon the tube 6 in the plane of the vent 7 the free ends 9 of the attaching member being extended in parallel spaced relation and apertured to receive a bolt 10, whereby the annular attaching member is secured in position upon the tube 6. A washer, designated generally by the numeral 11, is shaped conformably with the tube 6 and is formed with a central aperture 12 adapted to register with the vent 7 and is formed at its upper and lower ends with lateral extensions 13 engaging over and underneath the annular attaching member or ring 8, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, to secure the washer in position upon the tube.
A wedge shape slide valve 14 is slidably engaged with the outer surface of the packing strip or washer 11 and is disposed be tween the parallel ends 9 of the ring and the bolt 10, the small end of the wedge shaped valve being disposed downwardly and the inner surface thereof being curved conformably with the adjacent surface of the washer or packing strip 11. The lower extremity 15 ofthe slide valve is directed outwardly and upwardly with relation to the pump tube 6 and is adapted to engage the bolt 10 to limit the upward movement thereof.
An operating rod 17 is slidably mounted through the pump platform 18 and the base 19 of the pump and is formed at its upper end with a handle 20 and adjacent its upper end with a plurality of downwardly directed teeth 21 adapted to cooperate with the base 19 of the pump to secure the rod 17 against downward movement. The lower extremity of the operating rod 17 is connected with the upper reduced end of the slide valve 14 by a suitable coupling 22.
During non-freezing weather the rod 17 is moved downwardly so as to wedge the slide valve 14 between the bolt 10 and the pack -ing strip or washer 11 and thus close the openings and vent 12 and 11 respectively. In freezing weather the rod 17 is lifted. moving the valve 14 upwardly and engaging the angularly directed end 15 thereof with the bolt 10. which automatically carries the lower extremity of the valve away from the packing strip or washer 11, and thus uncovers the opening 12 and vent 7 permitting the water above the vent 7 to drain out of the pump tube. It will be understood that the rod 7 and valve 14 are secured in adjusted elevated position by the teeth 21 engaging the edge of the opening in the base 19 of the pump receiving said rod.
That I claim is:
1. In combination, a ring having spaced parallel ends. a bolt connecting said ends. a slide valve slidablv mounted between said spaced parallel ends and engaged with the inner surface of said bolt, a washer engaged between said parallel ends, lateral extensions on said washer engaged over and beneath said ring for securing the washer in posi- Patented ne re, rare.
(ill
tion thereon, and an operating rod connected with said slide valve.
2. In combination, a ring having parallel spaced ends, a bolt connecting said parallel spaced ends, a packing strip or washer dis posed between said parallel spaced ends having a central aperture, lateral extensions on said washer or packing strip engaging over and underneath said ring to secure the washer or packing strip in position thereon,-and a slide valve slidably mounted between said parallel ends, said washer or packing strip and said bolt.
3. In combination, an attaching member, a slide valve slidably mounted in said attaching member, means at the lower end of said slide valve adapted to engage said attaching member when the valve is moved upwardly to open position to automatically move the latter outwardly with relation to the center of the attaching member, and an operating rod associated with said slide valve.
l. In combination, an attaching ring having a pair of spaced parallel ends, a bolt Copies of this patent may be obtained for connecting said ends, a slide valve slidably mounted between said parallel spaced ends, and an upwardly and outwardly directed end on said slide valve adapted to engage said bolt to automatically move said valve outwardly with relation to the center of said ring when said valve is moved to open position.
5. In combination, an attaching ring having a pair of spaced parallel ends, a bolt connecting said ends, a wedge-shaped slide valve slidably mounted between the parallel spaced ends, and an upwardly and outwardly directed extension at the relatively small end of said valve adapted to engage said bolt to automatically move said valve outwardly with relation to the center of said rlng.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD J. OHALUPA.
