To all whom t may concern:

Be. it known that I, ANTON T. SUHREN,a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence Posts, lof which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to fence particularly to metal fence posts.

It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a fence post which may be very cheaply made of wrought, malleable or galvanized iron or steel, and which shall therefore be incapable of rotting and non-coms bustible.

A further object of my invention is to provide a fence post formed of sheet metal bent into a shape which will give the post great rigidity and so formed that staples, nails, or other fastening devices may be driven into the post at any desired place.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in connection with the post, staple or nail engaging clips clamping upon the post, holding the slot of the post closed, and adjustable at any desired height from the ground.

Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure l is a face view of a fence post constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a cross section thereof on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

In Figs. 1 to 3 I have shown my construction as used as a fence post, and from these figures it will be seen that the fence post is formed of sheet metal having any desired length, the sheet of metal being bent along the medial line as at 2 to provide oppositely disposed sides 3 which are joined to each other by a bulbous portion 4. The marginal portions of the parallel sides 3 are outwardly fianged as at 5 at right angles to the sides. A slot 6 is thus provided which is as deep as the depth of the sides 3. Detachably engaged with the flanges 5 and extending across the face of these flanges and therefore across the face of the post, are clips 7. These are each formed of a flat plate of metal, the ends of which are inwardly turned as at 8 to embrace the side posts, and

edges of the flanges 5. These clips 7 when applied vto the `post or other element conv I structed as described, prevent. the sides 3 yfrom spreading apart and prevent, therefore, the opening of the slot 6.l These clips may be adjusted at any desired point upon the post or element `and there may be as many of these clips thereon as maybe found desirable.

To provide for attaching fence wires to the .post I providel the staples 9 which are U-shaped in form and which have a llength somewhat greater than the depth .of the sides 3. The legs of these staples are driven through or passed throughperforations in the'clips 7, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and act to wedge the sides 3 apart. Therefore the legs of the staples will be very firmly engaged by the sides 3, as firmly engaged as if the staple had been driven into wood or embedded in concrete.

It will be obvious that nails or other fastening devices which may be inserted through the clips 7 and into the slot will also be held very firmly from movement and that therefore my invention is not limited to the use of staples. Thus, for instance, boards may be nailed to the posts by driving the nails through the clips 7 and into the slot 6. It will be seen that the clips not only tend to hold the staples and the wire or the boards at certain heights above the ground, but that they also prevent the post from spreading at the slot.

The clips 7 may either have their flanges 8 bent around the flanges 5 and engaged therewith at the time that they are disposed upon the post, or they may be previously formed as illustrated and then threaded or slipped upon the post.

It will be seen that the staples and clips may be shifted at any time, that the corners of the post may be bent over to provide for proper engagement with braces, and that the structure as described may be used for other purposes besides fence posts. Furthermore, it will be apparent that this post may be driven into the ground without the digging of holes, and that it may be made of extremely light material in view of the strength given to it by the shape.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

l. A fence post of the character described, approximately T-shaped in cross section and formed by bending a sheet of metal upon itself to provide oppositely disposed confronting relatively flat side Walls ,and loppositely `extending flanges at right angles to the side Walls, the side Walls at the edges opposite the flanges terminating in a bead joining the side Walls, said side .Walls defining a lslot having parallel sides and extending longitudinally of the post, clips extending acrossl the faces of the flanges and lying fiat against said faces, .the clips having their ends .bent around to snugly engage the side margins of .the yflanges and preventing relative expansion of the sides, and staples EU- shaped in form passing through the faces of the clips and 'between said side Walls and adapted to receive fence Wires.

2. A fence post of the Lcharacter described, approximately T-shaped in cross section andl formed by bending a sheet of metal upon itself to provide o positely disposed confronting relatively at side Walls and oppositely extending flanges at right angles to i the side Walls, the side Wallstogetherdefining a slot havingparallel vSides and extending longitudinally of the element, and clipsk extending across the faces of the lianges and lying flat against said faces and having their yends bent around to snugly engage the side margins,v ofthe flanges, the slot being adapted to `receive fastening devices driven thereinto and through said clips, a diagonally extending brace T-,shaped in cross section and having its upper and disposed bent over upon the flange of the brace.
