PERM'UTATIGN ELECTRIC SWITCH.
Application led .Tune 12, 1915.
To @ZZ alg/'2,0m t may concern Be it known that I, HARRY B. Munuocir, a citizen of the United States ot' America, residing in the city ot .ew York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in permutation Electric Switches, of which the following is a speciication.
XThis invention relates to safety controlling devices for electric circuits, and has for an object' to provide an electric switch which is capable of closing the circuit only when set according to a permutation.
The mechanism is peculiarly adapted for use in connection with the ignition system of an internal combustion engine whereby the circuit may be broken when desired, and which circuit can only be closed again by one knowing the combination o1 numbers or the permutation number or word.
In the drawings accompanyingthis specitication, one practicable embodiment of a form of my invention is illustrated.
In these drawings, Figure l is a face view of the switch and a diagrammatic repre- Fig. 2 is a lug. .1,
and Fig". 3 ,is a section taken on a plane transverse to the plane of Fig. 2, and at about the line l--Jl in Fig. 2, the pivotal ends of the levers being' shown in dill'erent planes tor the purpose ot illustrating the insulation block which supports these levers.
The form oi the invention herein shown, and which may be regarded as illustrative of the invention, is designed for use in connection witl an ai'ltomobile or motor boat, and is designed in such manner that it .may be secured in some suitalllqposition for the convenient actuation ot the operator. as, for instance, on thecowl dash-board ot an automobile. The back-plate l of the casinar is made oi' sonic suitable material` whereby it may be 'readily installed in position. vFiber is a, convenient material 'For this purpose, since the leading-in wires may be brought into thc mechanism from any convenient portion oi this base or back-plate. The outer casing' 2 is shown as being oilcircular formation and having suitable connection with the base or back-plate l. ln the present illustration these parts are con- Specication of Letters Patent.

nected together by a tight lit, a suitable rabbet being formed on the. base plate. The outer edge of the side casing is shown provided with an extending flange 3 for giving strength and rigidity to the parts, and also for vthe purposeof ornamentation.
The mechanism comprises a plurality of switches, each switch being provided with a level.' and a series of contact points, which levers and a contact selected from each series are connected together in .series in such manner that the circuit may only be closed by bringing` each lever into engagement with the selected contact point. A ringy oi insulation i is shown located within the casing` 2 and secured thereto in some. suitable manner, as for instance by means ot screws. in this ringl there are mounted the series of contact points designated withH out preference by the reference character 5 in Fig. 2. In Figs. l and 3 the series ot.' contact points are designated by reference characters 5, 5" 5C and 5", respectively. The face-plate (l is secured in the. casing` outwardly or forwardly ot the insulation ring 4 and the contact points ln the present illustration the tacesplate is shown provided with a plurality of radially extending` arms 7, which are shown bent transversely and. baehwardly at 7' and arc ot sullicient length to rest a `gainst the insulation rin g t lor properly positioningthe tace-plate relatively to sucl ring and the parts carried by these two elements resl'icaetively. Thel vfeet 7 are secured to the casing;- in some suitable manner, as for instance by means ot screws. The :Face-plate is provided with a series oi indices for the contact points, these respective series being indicated by the reference characters 8^, 8, 8, S". These index numbers are so located on the faceiplate that they the position ot the levers which cooperate with the contact points. vSuch levers are indicated in the drawings by the reference characters 9^, 5)", 9C, 9D. The piv ots tor the'levers and the major portion of each is shown located inwardly or rearwardly olf the faceplate and guarded and concealed thereby. A block of insulation i() is shown carried by the rear ot' thc faces plate. .and suitably secured thereto by screws 20. This insulation is lor the purpose of receiving the pivot posts 11 of the levers f), and for insulating these one from the other an index for each said pointer, and a series of contact points disposed rearwardly of the plateV for each switch lever.
