SANITARY GUARD FOR BOTTLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
Application filed April 9, 1915. Serial No. 20,206.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MABEL CAROLINE LOUISE DEEKS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Guards for Bottles, as described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
that form part of the same. y
The objects of the invention are, to obviate the disagreeable and unsanitary -fea-.
tures incident to the dripping of the contents of medicinal'and similar bottles, and to avoid the marring of furniture and A further ohjject is to efiect the preservation oflabels on bottles for reference.
The principal feature of the inventionconsists in the novel construction of an absorbent elastic band adapted to be placed around the neck of a bottle, whereby any dripping of the contents of the bottle down the side of the neck is arrested and absorbed and effectively prevented from flowing farther down the bottle.
' In the drawings, Figure '1 is a perspective view of a portion of a bottle showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an elevational view showing my absorbent band in section. Fig." 3 is an enlarged cross sectional detail of the band. -Like numerals of reference. indicate corresponding parts in' each figure.
In the practical application of this invention, I find that in order that the band may beeffective in preventing the flow from the drip of the bottle down the sides while the bottle is in use, that is, until all of the contents are used up, it is necessary that the. band shall be of suchra nature as to absorb the liquid and not allow the outer surface to become coated or glazed so that the fluid will eventually find its way over the top of the band.
I am aware that several forms of bands purporting to accomplish the result which I have achieved have been proposed but none of these have come into actual use evidently through their failure to attain the result intended.
The band herein shown consists of a band 1 of a soft absorbent textile fabric,
the stretching of same the edges curl inward. I preferably arrange a filler 4 of.
a soft absorbent material such as absorbent cotton between the inwardly curled edges of the band so as to provide the maximum of absorption.
In the use of this invention the woven or knitted fabric to be used is cut to the desired widths and may be made of any tubu-' lar form the desired circumference or from flat strips having the ends secured. together in any suitable manner.
i A band constructed as described has very high absorption qualities and; will. take in even very sticky fluids to a very great extent without the pores becoming clogged and the material in drying forming a hard surface over which the succeeding flow will find a path. I r
The effective stopping of tli drip from the head of a bottle flowing down the side thereof keeps the sides of the bottle always clean, prevents the marring or destruction of the label and also avoids the collection of dirt or germs which may be a gain transmitted by a person picking up the bottle. Other advantages will be obvious.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A sanitary guard for bottles, comprising an endless band of absorbent textile material adapted to embrace the neck of the bottle and being formed of a tubular length of material having the edges rolled inwardly.
2. A sanitary guard for bottles, comprising, an elastic band of textile material having inturned edges and a band of soft absorbent material arranged within the band of textile material. i
Signed atthe city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, inthe Dominion of Canada, this 29th day of- March 1915.
