To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM O. BECK and ALFRED U. HOEFER, citizens of the United States, residing at Ridgefield, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, and at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Coin-Collectors, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.

This invention relates to coin collectors for telephone tolls and has for its object to provide an attachment which may be readily applied to certain existing forms of coin collectors for the purpose of collecting the one cent war tax, assessed by the Federal Government on all telephone toll calls, the payment for which is above a certain amount.

The collectors to which the attachment of this invention are particularly applicable are those known as the post-payment type in which a coin of the proper denomination dropped into the chute will be directed into a collecting hopper but one of a size smaller than the denomination for which the chute is designed will pass'from the chute before it reaches the hopper and be returned through an opening in the collector wall to the depositor.

In accordance with this invention there is provided an attachment which is adapted to be secured to the inside of the collector to block the return opening therein and to catch and deflect into the hopper the smaller sized coins which may be deposited in payment of the war tax. The attachment preferably comprises a wedge-shaped block having secured .thereto divergent members adapted to receive a coin, one of said members having a. chute member bent at an angle which will deposit the coin received by the divergent members into a hopper.

As shown in the drawings, 5 designates a coin chute preferably of a size adapted to recelve a coin 6 larger in denomination than a one cent piece. This chute 5 is located in the collector on a slant and is adapted to receive coins inserted through a slot 7 in one wall of the collector. provided on its under side with an opening 10, the width of which is slightly less than a five or twenty-five cent piece but greater than a one cent piece so that a coin the same size or smaller than the latter, if deposited in the chute 5, will drop through the said chute before reaching the end thereof. Co1ns of the proper denomination deposited in the chute will be directed into a tilting receptacle 12 which may be operated by the depositor to deposit the coin in a hopper 13 The chute 5 is from which it will pass into a cash box (not shown).

Under ordinary conditions coins which are small enough to pass through the opening 10 will be caught and deflected out of the collector through a return opening (not shown) by means of a return device. This return device comprises divergent members 16 and 17 adapted to catch a coin passing through the opening 10, said divergent members being brought together to form a chute 18 which directs the coins out through an opening in the wall of the collector.

The attachment of this invention, which is substituted for this coin-return device comprises in general two

20 and 21, preferably of thin sheet metal secured to a wedge-shaped block 22, the member 20 preferably having formed integrally therewith a trough-shaped member 23 which extends downwardly into the hopper 13. When secured to the wall of the collector by means of the screw 25'the block 22 covers the opening in the wall through which coins were previously returned and causes such coins to be directed into trough 23 and the hopper 13 for collec-' tion. The same screw and mounting hole may be used for this new attachment as were used for the coin return chute.

What is claimed is:
