Be it known that I, JAMES JOHN SMITH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suction-Valves for Compressors, Engines, Pumps, and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In ammonia compressors, air compressors and internal combustion engines and some pumps the suction or inlet valve opens inward and while this meets the requirements the arrangement is faulty owing to the fact that if the valve spindle should break, as not infrequently occurs, the valve falls inward and on the return stroke causes damage through being larger than the clearance, and frequently leads to the total disablement of the machine for a time. To obviate this difiiculty I have devised such a valve that, should the spindle break, it cannot fall into the cylinder. To attain this end I enlarge the valve clear of the seat to a diameter larger than the spindle and form a groove therein concentric with the seat and of greater width than the maximum travel required. The valve shell or casing I provide with screwed studs having plain ends. After the valve is put in place these screws are inserted and screwed up until the inner ends do not quite touch the bottom of the groove in the valve. hen the valve and case are put into the cylinder cover the screw cannot work back. Many existing machines can be readily altered to this device only new valves and short springs being required.
I will now describe my invention more fully with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 a sectional elevation of the valve and easing of an ammonia compressor, and Fig. 2 is an inverted sectional plan on line 22 Fig. 1.
In the drawings I have illustrated the valve of an ammonia compressor constructed according to my invention, and in the following description I will describe my invention in relation to such, simply by way of example; its application to other valves will be obvious.
A is the valve designed in the usual way so far as the face and seat A are concerned. The spindle B is however enlarged at C to a diameter greater than the rest of the spindle B, but smaller than that of the valve A. This portion C has a groove D cut in the periphery so as'to leave a shoulder E. This groove is concentric with the valve A and seat A, and is of greater width than the maximum travel required.
F are studs with plain ends, screwed through the valve cage G into the groove D until the inner end does not quite touch the bottom thereof; When the valve A and cage G are put into the shell or case the studs F cannot work loose.

The use of my invention is obvious without further description suffice to say that when the valve A is being inserted or removed the studs F are screwed back clear of the shoulder E until the valve A is in place when they are screwed home again. Should the valve spindle B, from any cause, become broken, the studs F by projecting into the groove D prevent the valve falling into the cylinder.
Having now fully described and ascertained my said invention and the manner in which it is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In a suction valve, in combination, a valve casing having a valve seat, a valve Spindle guide, a valve cooperating with said valve seat and having a spindle working in said guide, a shoulder on said spindle positioned between said valve and said guide, and means extending through the wall of said casing and into the path of said shoulder, said means being positioned below said shoulder a distance greater than the travel of said valve.
