LIQUID-FEEDING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed November 4, 1912. Serial No. 729,397.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. TRAUDT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rutherford, county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid- Feeding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to liquid feeding devices, and more specifically consists of an improved'automatic device for feeding chemicals to a steam boiler in regulated quantities so that the amount of. treating liquid may be always in the same proportion to the amount of feed water pumped into the boiler for any one adjustment of the apparatus, whether the feed pump is operating rapidly or slowly.
The preferred form of apparatus embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying two sheets of drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of the apparatus with parts broken away, and Fig.
2 is an enlarged section of the preferred form of pump and motor.
Throughout the drawings, like reference figures indicate like .parts.
1 represents the Water cylinder of any desired form of boiler feed pump, and 2 the piston rod thereof. This pump cylinder has an inlet connection 3, and an outlet connection 4, and 5 is the feed pipe extending to the boiler, not'shown.
6 is the cylinder of a small subsidiary pump having a plunger piston 7 operating therein.
8 is the cylinder of a motor device for operating the subsidiary pump. As shown,
this cylinder is bolted to the housing 18, to
which the subsidiary pump cylinder is also fastened and has a piston 9 therein mounted on or connected to the piston 7 of the subsidiary pump.
The subsidiary pump has an inlet pipe 12 connected toany convenient reservoir of liquid 14, and an inlet valve 13. It also has an outlet pipe 15 extending to the feed pipe 5 of the feed pump, and an outlet valve 16.
22 is a valve in said pipe 15. A branch pipe 11 controlled by valve 21 leads to the inlet pipe 3 of the feed pump. The housing 18 is bolted through lugs 17, 17 to the side of the pump cylinder 1.
One end of the motor cylinder is connected through a pipe 19 to oneend of the feed pump cylinder, and the other end through a pipe 20 to the other end of the feed pump cylinder.
The mode of operation of my invention is as follows: One stroke of the feed pump piston will force water through one of the inlet pipes, as 19, into one end of the motor cylinder 8, while the other stroke of the feed pump will force water into. the other end of the motor cylinder through the other pipe 20, and thus a positive reciprocation of the motor piston will be created which will reciprocate the subsidiary pump plunger, or piston 7, and create a flow of chemicals through the pipes 12 and 15 to the boiler feed pipe. If the feed pump is working against a boiler pressure so high that it is not advisable to 'force the chemical into the discharge pipe, the valve 21-may be opened and the valve 22 closed, thus forcing the chemical into the inlet pipe 3.
The advantages of my invention comprise its positive action, and the absolute certainty of its operation in unison with the feed pump so that material is fed to the boiler only when the feed pump is operating, and then in quantities exactly proportionate to the amount of feed water supplied.
It is evident of course that various changes could be made in the details of construction of the pumps, valves, and connections without departing from the principle of the inv vention.
Having, therefore, described my invention, I claim:
The combination'with the water cylinder and connections of a feed pump, and a reservoir for holding chemicals in solution, of a subsidiary pump having an inlet connection from the reservoir of chemicals and an outlet communicating with the feed pump connections, together with a motor cylinder connected at one end to one end of the feed pump cylinder by a conduit maintained continuously open during the operation of the 100 device and at the other end to the other end h puinp inlet pipe with valves controlling of the feed pump cylinder by a. similarly same. open conduit, and a piston in said motor c'yl- L inder connected to the piston of the subsid- 5 iary pump, said Subsidiary pump outlet hav- Witnesses:
ingbranch pipes,- one extending to the feed A. PARKER-SMITH, pump outlet pipe and the other to the feed M. G. CRAWFORD.
