In order to adjust the respective ends of the upper feed-rolls with relation to each other on said housings, and to adjust the relative elevations of said respective upper feed-rolls, I mount each end of the shaft 53 ofeach of said feed-rolls in a. bearing 54 slidable in a guideway 55 in the swinging end of said housing. For limiting Htheupward movement of theY bearing va hollow bolt 56 is provided, which is threaded in a threaded hole 57-in the housing and arranged to impinge said bearing. A bolt 58 is received through the bore 59 of the hollow bolt and has threaded connection in the threaded socket'60'in said bearing, the head 6l of said bolt being received above and supported by the hollow bolt, the head limiting the downward movement of the bearing in adjusting said bearing. The hollowl bolt forms the positioning means for elevation of the bearing and the inn-er bolt forms the ,means for clampingthe bearing upwardly against saidpositioning means, the bearing being suspended from said Vinner bolt. By these means each end of each of the upper feed-roll shafts is adjusted, whereby the contact line of the periphery of each of said upper feed-rolls'is adjusted with relation to the level of the stock being fed, so that upon unequal wear of the peripheral surface of either of the rolls, the feeding or contact line thereof may be leveled with relation to the other roll, or either of said feed-rolls boldily raised or lowered with relation to the ot 1er. My improved construction is such that the 'forward on reverse feeds for the feed-rolls are imparted by a straight belt, and thelchanges l in feeding relations are obtained by asingle belt, which is preferably a straight belt, received about said pulleys andfshiftablev from one pulley to another, thereby economizing in power.` Each of the lower feed-rolls has a shaft -91 journaled yat each end. of the feed-roll in a kbearing 92, slidabley up and down in a guideway 93 in the main frame.

The turning of the turning means ad justs all of the stirrups simultaneously for adjusting the lower feed-rolls simultaneyously up or down.- The adjustment of the respective roll-shaft bearings with relation lto saidy sti-rrups permits independent adjustmentlof each end of each'of the lower feed-rollsffor alining'the same with relationfto each other, and causing selective projection of the contactline of the periphery of eachk of the lower feed-rolls above the plane of the table, or for alining said contact-lines ofthe 'lower rolls with relation lbut rotates inthe same direction as ysaid shaft, preferablyl at the same speed. The gear 128 ymeshes with the gear 125 and forms one of the transmitting gears for the transmitting train of gearing fordriving the upper feed-rolls. Mounting said gear 128 about said feed-roll shaftrv permits economy in the size of gears and provides a compactr and substantial construction, and avoids thenecessity" of employing ai train of gearing off-set with'relation to said-rollshaft.

Novel vgear covering and link mechanism is provided for the transmitting gearing between the cross-shaft 76 and the cross-shaft 123. Thus the gear-cover 33 'comprises an inner wall 135, an outer wall'136, and a connecting flange 137 between said walls, the connecting flange having 'an interruption 138 therein. vThis gear-cover has a bearing 139 about the cross-shaft 123 and bearings 140, 141,. in which'thefrespective ends of ther stud '130 arejournaled. A connecting rib 142 integral with said gear-cover connects the bearings 139,144.0,.and a strengthening yoke 143 integral ywith said gearcover connects the bearings 140, 141. The
outer wallfof the gear-cover is shown removable an'd is secured to the fiange by screws A'portion of the saidyoke is formed on' said outer wall and a portion on the inner part of the gear-cover, the yoke portions being rigidly connected by similar screws 144. A gear-cover 147 is provided which comprises an inner wall 148, an outer wall' 149, and a connecting flange v150 between said walls, said flange having an interruption 151 therein which mates with the interruption 138. Cheeks 153 extend from theiange 150 so that the flanges at the respective ends of said interruptions may overlap eachother irrespective of the f swinging relations of said gear-covers. There is further an arc-joint 152 between said gear-covers at said interruptions so as to avoid any detrimental space between said .a portion of said linkbeing formed as a rib Von the wall of said gear-cover and a portion thereof protruding beyond said gearcover and received within the gear-cover 147. The inner wall of the gear-cover 147 is provided with an elongated opening 160 received about the bearing 77 of the cross- Vsha-ft 76 to permit oscillation of said gearcoverl with relation to said bearing. The outer wall of the gear-cover 147 is preferably removable and is secured to the flange of said gear-cover by Vmeans of screws 161.
The lower gear-cover is pivoted about the laxis of rotation of the lower feed-roll 19 and the upper gear-cover and link mechanism is'pivoted about the axis of rotation of the cross-shaft 123. The stud 130 between the said gear-covers follows the movements of said gear-covers for maintaining proper meshing of the gear 129 with the gears 128 and 131, the swinging end of the lower gear- `cover accommodating itself to the movements of adjustment of said gear-covers and having free oscillation about the gears covered thereby. The construction of the mechanism insures complete covering for said gears throughout the range of adjustment of the feed-rolls and forms substantial link mechanism between the` gears.
Gears 165, 166,'are fast on the cross-shaft 123. A gear 167 is fast on the shaft of the upper feed-roll 20` and meshes with the gear 165 and a gear 168 is fast on the shaft of lthe upper feed-roll 21 and-meshes with the gear 166, the said gears on said shafts of said respective feed-rolls being preferably at opposite ends of said feed-rolls.
Novel means are also provided for apply ing pressure to the yielding upper feedroll housings. Each of the upperfeed-roll housings is'pressed downwardly by a coilspring 171, shown as a helical spring, the
said springs being in laterally off-set relaard, a vrnut 178 being vreceived about said threaded end. The lower end of the rodis provided with trunnions 179 received in a trunnion-socketlSl. The springk is diagonally positioned with relation to the housing and acts directly upon a part of thehousing within the arc of` swing of the axis of rotation of the feed-rolltherein,the said arc being indicatedby the broken 'line 182.- It is of course understood that one or more of these yielding mechanisms may beemployed. I have shown two lof these springs and rods, one for each of the roll-housings, the same being located in laterally off-set relation, theirw upper ends crossing each other, preferably outside said arc 182. The innerfends of said.y springs and rods are preferably-within said arc land their outer ends outside said arc. Y
The yielding pressure means shown and described provides compactnessy of structure, permits the feed-rolls tov be placed closely adjacent to eachl other, and equaliz'es the pressure of they rolls upon the stock throughout a wide range of yield of said rolls. The removable half of the lbearings 77 are held in place by bolts 183V threaded into the cross-grit 184 of the main frame. Y
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a feeding device for wood-working machinery,the combination of a main frame having sides, a feed-roll frame having long side slides extending up and down, a feedroll on said last-named frame, the sides of said main frame being provided with long recesses extending up and down at their outer faces and forming guideways for said side slides, an outer plate secured to one of said frames at' each side of said main frame forming covers for said guideways, a bearing in each of said side slides, a drive-shafty journaled therein, said drive-shaft extending through said sides, side slides and outer plates, a gear on said drive-shaft outside of andV adjacent to each of said outer plates, a feed-roll, and transmitting gearing between one of said ygears and said feed-roll.
2. vIn a feeding device for wood-working machinery, the combination of a lower feedroll, a bearing at each end thereof, guiding means for each of said bearings, a stirr-up formed as an independent member foreach of' said bearings, an adjusting screw between the upper wall of each of said stirrups and the bearing therefor for adjustably hanging said respective bearings from said stirrups and independently adjusting the saine, asecond adjusting screw for each of said stirrups, said last-named adjusting screws having operative connections with the lower ends of said stirrups respectively, and turning means having operative connections with both said last-named adjusting screws for simultaneously raising and lowering said stirrups. e f
3. In a feeding device for wood-working machinery, the combination of a pivoted feed-roll housing, a support therefor, a feedroll rotatively mounted in saidhousing, and pressure means for said feed-roll comprising a coil spring, said pressure means having operative connection with said housing within the circle of the arc of swing of the axis of rotation offsaid feed-roll between the vertical planes parallel to the pivotal axis of said housing in which said pivotal axis and said axis of rotation are respectively located, and the line of said spring extending slantingly between saidoperative connection and said vertical plane in which said pivotal axis is located. e
4. In a feeding device for wood-working machinery, the combination of a pivotal feed-roll housing, a support therefor, a feedroll rotatively mounted in said housing,

6. In a feeding device for wood-working y machinery, the combination of a pivoted feed-roll housing, a support therefor, a feedroll rotatively mounted in said housing, and

In a yfeeding device for wood-working machinery, the combination of an upper feed-roll, means for adjusting rsaid upper feed-roll up and down, driving means for said upper feed-roll comprising a driving gear, a driven gear operative for rotating said upper feed-roll, and an intermediate gear, andgear covers for said gears, said gear-covers respectively pivoted at their separated ends about theaxes lOf rotation of said driving gear and said driven gear, said gear-coversy at their adjacent ends being crossingly arranged and -provided with a bearing about the axis lof rotation of said intermediate gear for the support of said intermediate gear and the pivotal yconnection of said covers.

In a feeding device for wood-working machinery, the combination of a main frame, an upper feed-roll frame adjustable thereon, a feed-roll housing, an upper feedroll therein, a drive-shaft therefor on said feed-roll frame, a gear on said drive-shaft, an intermediate gear for driving the same, a pivoted gear-cover about said gears, said gear-cover having a pivot-hub aboiit said drive-shaft, a bearing on said feed-roll frame for said hub, and a bearing for said housing on said hub, substantially as described.
