To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, Jaime residing at lVashington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Gas-Controlling Devices for Stoves, of which the following is a specification. 3
This invention relates to gas controlling devices for stoves, particularly gas ranges and the like, the primary object of the invention in its broad aspect being to provide a device whereby the supply of gas to the burner and the ignition thereof at the burner willbe controlled by placing a vessel upon, or removing same from the stove.
The invention is an improvement upon that shown, described and claimed in Letters Patent 1,070,812 granted to me -Aug. 19, 1913 and Letters Patent No. 1,151,108, granted to me AugustQ l, 1915, the primary object of the present invention as distin guished from the. invention disclosed in the aforesaid Letters Patentis the provision of means for controlling the supply of gas through mechanism operated by the placing of a vessel upon, or removal from the stove, without imparting any movement to the pilot light tube, to obviate any danger of extinguishing of the pilot light when the mechanism is operated. i 2
A further object of thepresent invention is to provide injuxtaposition to the burner cock, a regulating valve for the pilot light by means of which the amount of, gas ad" mitted to the pilot light tube can bevaried at will, and, when desired, a sufiicient amount of gas admitted to such tube or pipe.

Another object is the provision of a filtering medium for the pilot light tube for purifying the gas before the samereaches the tip by absorbing from the gas any moisture or foreign 'matter, the filtering medium in the present invention being 10- cated at a point remote from the flame and consequently notsubjected to the heat of the latter, thus protecting the filtering me dium for rapid deterioration. The location of the filteringmedium moreover provides for easy renewing of the same when necessary.

A still further object of the present in vention is to so mount the pilot light tipv upon the pilot light tube as to permit of its being readily moved or adjusted to bring itinto the desired proximity with i-ela-tionto the burner proper, Without necessitating any change or alteration in the position of the pilot light tube itself.
Other minor objects are sought by the presentinvention, all of which will be hereinafter more specifically described and then claimed, without however confining myself to the precise construction shown and described, as various slight changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit thereof and the scope of the same as claimed.
In describingthe invention in detail, reference will. be had to the accompanying drawings illustrating a practical and pre- .ferred embodiment of the invention, like slides on said tube, also showing a portionv of the operating lever for the bracket' Fig. 1. is a transverse vertical sectional view through the bracket shown in F 1g. 3 and the pilot l1ght,tube,,the operating lever for the bracket being shown in side elevation.-
Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the filtering medium holder with which the pilot light tube is connected, showing a part of the coupling that connects same to the gas controlling cock. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views in side elevation of the pilot light tube coupling partly broken away, the regulating valve of such coupling being in transverse section, Fig.6 showing the valve in fully opened position, and Fig; 7 showing the valve in closed position, and Fig. 8 isan enlarged sectional viewthrough the valve mechanism.
In the devices shown in the Letters Patent referredto, the pilot light tube is connected at its rear end with the gas controlling cock, and intermediate its .ends has connection with the mechanism that is operated by the placing upon, or removal ofa vessel from guished due to its rapid movement through the air. Furthermore, where the pilot light flame is quite small and for this reason not plainly visible at the pilot light tip, the operator is sometimes in doubt Whether the pilot light is extinguished or not, necessitating a manipulation of the mechanism to determine such fact.
' Those parts of the present device which are the same in construction as in the aforesaid patents it is not deemed necessary to describe in detail herein, and the same will therefore be described only generally.
In the present illustration 10 indicates generally, a stove embodying an upper or top plate 11 provided with apertures in which are mounted the usual grids 12, below each of which is a gas burner 14 supplied with gas through a burner pipe 15 fed from a supply pipe 16 in the usual manner, it being understood that for each gas burner 14 and burner'pipe 15 employed, a separate or individual controlling cock 17 is pro vided. The valve member 18 of the controlling cock 17 employed in the present invention is of the same construction as is fully shown and described in Letters Patent 1,070,812 heretofore referred to, which provides for a flow of gas from the supply pipe 16tothe burner pipe 15 and burner 14 when the valve 18,111 open position, and which prevents the gas from so flowing to the burner when the valve is in closed position, the valve 18 however being so arranged and constructed that a constant supply of gas from the supply pipe 16 to the pilot tube is provided unless the passage way leading from the cock17 to the pilot light tube be closed'by a manually manipulated regulating valve to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. A manually operable valve 19 as usual is provided for shutting off the flow of gas to the burner independently of the valve 18.
As heretofore stated, the pilot light tube in this construction remains stationary, the valve 18 being operated by a member separate from the pilot light tube instead of by the latter as in my Patent No. 1.151.108.
This stationary mounting of the pilot light tubeenables me to dispense with the supporting bracket necessary in the construction shown in said Patent No. 1,151,108, since such tube is comparatively light in weight and its support at its inlet end is wholly sufiicient when no movement of the tube is required. This simplifies and materially cheapens the cost of manufacture.
Depending from the lower side of the casing of the cook 17 is a pipecoupling-20, closed at its lower end and the passage 21 in which communicates through passage 17 in the cock casing with the gas supply pipe 16. Tapped or threadedly connected with this pipe coupling'20 at or near its lower end is a pipe 22 into the inner end of which the receiving end of the pilot light tube 23 is received, preferably by a threaded engagement as shown.
The purpose of providing the pipe 22 instead of connecting the outer end of the pilot lighttube directly with the pipe coupling 20 is to provide a suitable receptacle forthe filtering medium 24 such as cotton or the like, with which the pipe 22 is more or lessfilled. By locating this filtering medium in a member separate from the pilot light tube and at a point remote from the zone of heat from the burner, the material is wholly removed from the action of the heat thereon, thus materially increasing the life of the filtering medium, necessitating verv infrequent if any renewals.
The pilot light tube is extended underneath I the burner tube 15 and burner 14 and has its inner end bent upwardly within the central opening of said burner, and has mounted thereon, a burner tip 25, the purpose-of this particular form of tip being to provide such mixture of air and gas as to insure of a blue flame. In my Patent No. 1,122,944, December 29, 1914, the burner tip is shown as threadedly-connected with the discharge end of the pilot light tube. I prefer in using this tip with the present invention to simply sleeve it onto the discharge end of the pilot light tube with a relatively tight fit as this enables me to readily adjust the tip on the pilot light tube so as to bring the discharge end of such tip into any desired as a simmer burner, I make the passageway 21in the pipe coupling 20and the port 27 in the valve 26, relatively large so as to admit a suflicient quantity of gas'for the purpose stated when it is desired to so make use of the pilot light tube. A pin 29 car- 'ried by the valve 26 works in a recess 30 provided therefore in the pipe coupling 20 and limits the movement of the valve in both directions, as well as indicating, when at any point between the limits of its'movement, the amount of opening of the valve 26.
For operating the valve 18 when a vessel is placed uponthe grid12, a counterbalanced operating member 31 is employed which is described in detail in my said Patent No. 1,151,108,including a cap to be engaged by the vessel. This operating member like in said Patent No. 1,151,108 has a loose connection at one end with the arm 32 of a bell-crank lever that is mounted to swing on the under side ofthe stove top 11. The other arm 33 of this bell-crank lever instead of being formed with ahead as in said Patent No. 1,151,108 terminates in a hook or clevis 3a which receives the. pilot light tube 23 1 within a substantially U shaped bracket 35 that is adjustably mounted on a rod 36 carried by or secured to the lower end of a lever-arm 37 that is attached to the valve 18. The bracket 35 is secured in adjusted position upon the rod as by a set screw 38, binding the rod between it and a flange or lug 39 carried by the bracket (see Fig. 4).
Such being the construction, the operation may be briefly stated as follows: Assuming the device to be in the position shown in Fig. 1, the pilot light having been ignited, and the manually controlled valve 19 being in open position, it will be evident that when a vessel is placed upon the conical cap of the operating member 31 the depression of said cap by the weight of the vessel actuatesthe swinging bell-crank moving the lower end of arm 33 outwardly and carrying therewith bracket 35 and rod 36 so as to operate lever-arm 37 and open the valve 18 to admit gas-to the burner tube 15 and burner 14 where it is ignited by the pilot light. Upon the removal of the vessel, the counterweight 40 returns the operating member to elevated position, simultaneously actuating the bellcrank and rod 36 so as to close valve 18 and shut off the flow of gas to the burner, the pilot light tube remaining stationary at all times whereby the flame of such pilot light is at no time in danger of being extinguished.
By adjusting the position of the bracket 35 on the rod 36, and the resultant adjustment which is made to the long arm oi? the bell-crank, the extent to which the valve 18 will be opened or closed can be readily controlled to provide any desired flame at the burner.
The use of the pilot light as a simmer burner necessitates only the closing of the valve 19 and the adjustment of valve 26 to permit the desired flow of gas into the pilot light tube, the actuation of the valve 18 by the operating member under these conditions having no efiect on the flow of gas.

3. In combination, a burner, a gas supply, a controlling valve in'the cook, a lever arm carried bythe valve, a slidable bracket, a rod connected to the bracket and lever arm, an operating member, and an operative connection between the bracket and the operating member.

In combination, a burner, a gas supply, a cock between the burner and gas supply, a controlling valve in said cock provided with a stem, a lever arm fixed on said stem, a rod pivoted to the lever arm, a slidably mounted bracket connected to the rod, an operating member having one end fixed and the other end free and a bell crank lever having one arm connected to the bracket and the other arm connected to the free end of the operating member.
5. In combination, a burner, a gas supply, a cock between the burner, and gas supply, a controlling valve in said cock provided with a stem, a lever arm fixed to said stem, a rod pivoted to the lever arm, a fixed pilot burner tube extending beneath the burner, a bracket slidably mounted on the tube and connected to the rod, an operating member having one end fixed and the other free, and a bell crank lever having one arm connected to the bracket and the other arm connected to the free end of the operating member.

In combination, a burner, a gas supply, a cock for controlling the supply of gas to the burner, a controlling valve in said cook, a pipe coupling with its passage in constant communication through the cock with said gas supply, a pilot light tube connected with said coupling and in communication with said passage, a regulating valve in the coupling for said passage, an operating member having one end fixed and the other end free, a bracket slidably mounted on the pilot light tube, a rod connected to said bracket, an arm connected to the controlling valve and rod, and a bell crank lever having one arm connectedto the bracket and the other arm connected to the free end of the operating member.
