METHOD OF BENDING FLANGED SHAPES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BARBOUR, a citizen of the UnitedStates, anda resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have i invented a new and useful Im rovement in Methods of Bending Flange Shapes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is' a front view of a portion of a three-high mill showing one method of bending flanged sections from a blank. Fig. 2 is a similar view for bending flanged sections from a differently shaped blank. Fig. 3 is a similar View for bending a differently shaped section from the blank shown in Fig. 1. Fig. l is a similar View for bending a section similar to that shown in Fig.3 from a blank similar to that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view of an apparatus for bending still a differently shaped section from a blank similar to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar view of an apparatus for bending still another former section from a blank Figs. 7 8', 9, 10 and 11 are sectional views of a plurality of blanks and sections formed therefrom by my method.
My invention relates to an improved method for roll-bending flanged sections having a web and a plurality of flanges, and is designed to provide a cheap and efficient method of bending theflanges or a portion thereof with relation to the web.
The precise. nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may bemade in the details of construction of the apparatus and general arrangement of the parts, as well as the various steps of the method, without departing from the spirit andscope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims. In Figs. 1 to 6, A, B,'and C designate the rolls of a three-high mill, between which is formed a plurality of passes for bending the various sections from the blank.
In Fig. 1, I have shown an apparatus for bending a section such as is shown at a which consists of a web and a plurality of flanges at each end of the web, a portion of each of the flanges being at substantially right angles to the web, while the extremities thereof are at substantially right angles to the other portions of the flanges and substantially parallel with the web. In forming this section, I take ablank, as indicated at a, and run it through a pass a in which both sides of the web are engaged by the rolls, while the web extends at an angle of approximately 455 degrees to the axes of the rolls, and in which pass, I bend a portion of two of the flanges at an angle of approximately 90 degrees to the web, and maintain the other two flanges at approximately an angle of 45 degrees to the web. I then run the section through a second pass, as indicated at a and maintain the web at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the axes of the rolls, and bend a portion of each of these flanges at anangle' of 90 degrees to the web, without changingthe angular relation of the other portions thereof. After the blank has been run through this last mentioned pass, a portion of each of the flanges will extend at substantially right angles to the web, while the outer extremities thereof will extend at an angle of substantially 45 degrees to the other portions of the flanges and the web. I then run the blank through a pass, such as in dicated at a and bend the extremities of one of the flanges at each end of the web at about right angles to the other portion of each flange and parallel with the web. The blank is then run through another pass, as indicated at a to bend the extremities of the other two flanges to form a section hav-' ing a web and a plurality of flanges at each end of the web, the outer extremities of the flanges being substantially parallel with the web and at about right angles to the other portions of the flanges.
In Fig. 2, I have shown another form of apparatus for rollingthe same section from a section or blank such as shown at m and n in Figs. 5 and 6, respectively. In this case, I bend the outer extremities of two of theflanges at an angle of about 45 degrees without disturbing that portion of the flanges adjacent to the web as indicated at 6 The blank is then run through a pass, as indicated at Z2 to shape the blank similar to the blank shown at a in Fig. 1. In Figs. 3 and 4:, I have shown rolls for forming a section similar to those shown in Fig. 1, with the exception that in these sec- 15 or substantially 90 degrees to the web. The

In Fig. 4, I have shown an apparatus for bending a. similar section to that shown at (1 in 3 from an I-beam shown at. 0 In this-method, I run the section through ,thepass a to bendthe outer extremities of 2.3 (two ofthe flanges at-an angle of about 45 degrees, with relation to the web and ,tlanges, and then run the section through .the passe to bendthe extremitiesof the .other flanges in a similar -m-anner. It will also be un derstood by those 'familiar with the art,'that various other sectionsthanthose shown in the drawings may be formed by this method.
In the above mentioned figures, I have; shown a plurality of sections which may be afOlFlllQd from the various blanks by means of thevarious steps set forth in the method of .roll bending sections, while running .the .sections through roll passes in which the webs a are maintained at .an angle of approximately 4-5 degrees to the axes of the rolls, so that'the rolls willoengage both sides of the web and both sides of the flanges which are being bent.
The advantages of my invention result from theprovision of itlllQllhOfl for bonding sections having a web and .a plurality .ott' flangesat each end of tl eweb, the flanges having one portion atan angle toanother portion thereof. Further, from the ,provision ofn'olls which are arrangedto engage both sides of the Web while. bending the flangesto form an Ivbeam from a rolled section,or section havin a--web and a plui wralityzofflanges ateachend thereof, each having t-wo portions at an anglezto each .other, and thereby avoid distorting the section.
This application is a continuation of'my application Serial No. 5'-Tj,%l8,*filed March I claim:
1. The method of shaping a section-havinga web; and at least two flanges extending i vfrom-the webbetween rotary bending means, consisting in moving the blank in avlongitudinal direction between the bending means and engaging both-sides of one flange-and both sides of the .web and bending said ll flangeiat a different angle with relation to the-web,-while engaging at least one portion of one face 'olfthe other flange, and inaintainingthe web at an angle torthe line of engaging p'ressureand 131) an angle :to, aline perpendicular to the line of the engaging pressure, ithen moving the blank between the bending means a second time and engaging-both sides of the-second flange and both sides of theweb and bending the sec- 3 0nd flange with relation to the web, while engaging at least one portion of one face of the first flange, and maintaining the web at an angle tothe line of the engaging pressure and at an angle to a line perpendicular to the line ofthebending means, substantially as described.
2. The method of shaping between rotary bending means a section having a plurality of flanges extending from a web, consisting in moving the blank, between the bending means and engaging both sides of two of the flanges and both sides of the web and bending at least one portion of each of said flanges at adifl'erent angle with relation to the other portion thereof, and at the same time engaging at least one portion of one face of another flange, and maintaining the web at an angle to the line of the engaging pressure and at an angle to a line perpendicular to the line of the engaging pressure, substantially as described.
3. The method of shaping a section having a plurality of flanges extending from each end of the web between rotary bending means, consisting in moving the blank between the bending means in a longitudinal direction. and engaging both sides of a pair of alternate flanges and both sides of the web and bending said flanges at a-different angle with relation to the web, while maintaining the web and another pair of flanges at an angle to the line of the engaging pressure and at an angle to a line perpendicular to the line of the bending means, substantially as described." 5. The method of shaping between rotary bending means a section having a web and at least two flanges extending from the web, consisting in moving the blank between the bending means and engaging both sides of one of the flanges and both sides of the web and bending at least one'portion of said flange ata different angle with relation to another portion thereof and at the same time engaging at least one portion of one face ofthe other flange, and maintaining at least one portion of each flange in planes parallel to each other and maintaining the web at an angle to the line of the engaging pressure and at an angle to a line perpendicular to the line of the engaging pressure, substantially as described.
6. The method of shaping a section having a web and two flanges extending from each end of the web between rotary bending means, consisting inmoving the blank in a longitudinal direction between the bending means and engaging both sides of a pair of alternate flanges and both sides of the web 7. during'said bending action maintaining the web at an angle to the line of the engaging pressure and atian angle to a line perpendicular to the line of the engaging pressure,
substantially as described.
8. The method of shaping a section having a web and a plurality of flanges at each end of the web between rotary bending means, consisting in moving the blank between the bending means in a longitudinal direction and engaging both sides of a pair of alternate flanges and both sides of the web and bending at least one portion of each of said flanges at a different angle with relation-t0 the web, and at the'same time engaging at least one portion of one face of each ofthejsecondpair of alternate flanges and maintaining at least a portion of each of the four flanges in planes parallel to each other and maintaining the web at an angle to the line of the engaging pressure and at an angle to a line perpendicular to the line of the engaging pressure then moving the blank a second timebetween the bending means and engaging both sides of each of the unbent flanges and both sides of s the web, and bending at least one portion of each of said flanges at a different angle with relation to the other portions of said flanges and also engaging at least one portion of one face of each of the'bent flanges and maintaining at least one portion of each of the four flanges in planes parallel to each other while maintaining the web at an angle to a line perpendicular to the line of the engaging pressure, substantially as described.
9. The method of shaping a section having a web and a plurality of flanges-extending from the web between rotary bending means, consisting in moving the blank in a longitudinal directionrbetween the bending means and engaging both sides of one flange and both sides of the web and bending one portion of said flange at a diflerent angle a with relation to another portion, and at the same time engaging at leastrone portion of one face of another flange,'and during such bending maintaining at least one portion of the second flange at an angle to a portion of the first flange and maintaining the web at an'angle to the line of the engaging pressure and ,at an angle to a'line perpendicular to theline of the engaging pressure, then movingtheblank between the bending means a second time and engaging both sides of the web and both sides of the second flange and bending a portion of the second flange at a different angle with relation to another portion thereof, and during said bending action engaging at least one portion of one face of the bent flange and maintaining at least one portion of the first flange at an angle to at least one portion of the second flange, and maintaining the web at an angle to the line of the engaging pressure and at an angle to a'line perpendicularto the line of the engag ing pressure, substantially as described.
10. The method ofshaping a section hav- 1ng a web and a pair of oppositely extending flanges at each end of the Web between. rotary bending means, consisting in moving the blank in a longitudinal direction between the bending means and engaging both sides of a pair of alternate flanges and both sides of the web and bending at least a portion of each of said flanges at a different angle with relation to the web, and during such bending action engaging at least one portion of one face of each of the other flanges and maintaining at least one portion of each of the flanges at one end of the web in the same plane and at least a portion of each of the pair of flanges at the other end of the web in another plane, and also maintainingthe web at an angle to the line of the engaging pressure and at an angle to a line perpendicular to the line of the engaging pressure, then moving the blank between the bending means a second time and engaging both sides of each of the second pair of alternate flanges and both sides of the web and bend ing at least one portion of each of the other alternate flanges at a different angle with relation to the web and durin such bend the bending action, substantially as described. 11. The method of shaping a section having a web and two flanges extending from each end of the web between rotary bending means, consisting in moving the blank between the bending means and engaging both sides of two of the flanges and both sides of the web and bending at least one portion of each of said flanges at a different angle with relation to the web while engaging at least one portion of one face of each of the other two flanges and maintaining at least one portion of each of the four flanges in a different plane and maintaining the web at an angle to the line of the engaging pressure and at an angle to a line perpendicular to the line of the engaging pressure, substantially-as described.
