ORRIN COLLIER, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT M. FUNKHOUSER, OF NEI/V YORK, N.Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIELDSVFOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,l0l, dated August 22, 1871.
To albwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN COLLIER, of Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Shield for Boots and Shoes; and I d hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which Will enable others skilled inthe art to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a ner and useful device for protecting the bottoms of pantaloons from Water and mud; and consists in a detachable shield on the heel of the boot or shoe, made of metal or other suitable material, projecting back and from the heel, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents the improvement applied to a boot. Fig. 2 represents the shield detached and as seen from the line w of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of Fig. 2 taken on the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the projecting shield, which in this example of my invention is made With a collar, B which incloses the heel, as seen in Fig. l; but I do not conne myself to any particular form or manner of construction, nor to any particular material. C is a metallic spring which fits into the angle, as represented. This spring, it will be seen, has a spur, D, which enters the back of the heel of the boot or shoe with hooks E E at its ends, Which pass in front of the heel so as to securely hold the shield in place. The hooks E E maybe sharp pointed so as to penetrate the sides of the heel, if preferred; but the shield may be fastened in any manner so that it is kept securely to the heel.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A projecting plate or shield secured to the heel of a boot or shoe, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
ORRIN COLLIER.
