GLINKER-TONGS.
' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHAnLns RoTI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Philadelphia, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clinker- Tongs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the 1nvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an implement used in the care of furnaces which consists of a device for the removal of clinkers from the fire chamber of a furnace, boiler, or like construction.
ard to Which the platesare attached.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be found very efficientin operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improved clinker tongs in open position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the clinker tongs partly closed and holding a clinker between the gripping plates; Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of one of the gripping plates.
The numeral 1 in the accompanying drawing represents a standard which consists of a bar of metal, preferably cylindrical in shape and of a suflicient length for the purpose for which it is used. One end of the standard is bent downwardly at right Specification of Letters Patent.

angles as shown at 2 to provide the same with a handle, and the other end 3 of the same is, curved laterally so as to form one portion of the large space at the ends of the tongs for the purpose of holding large clinkers between the plates, Pivotally mounted on the standard 1 adjacent the curved portion 3 of the same, is a movable member or rocking lever 4. V The rocking lever 4 is curved oppositely from the direction of the curvature of the portion 3 of the standard 1 for the same purpose as has been hereinbefore stated. The rocking lever 4 has a portion of its lower end 5 bent back upon itself and spaced therefrom, and the lower portion of the same 6 is adapted to receive the standard 1 andto be pivotally connected therewith by means of a pivot pin 7 Riveted or secured to the outer ends of the rocking lever 4 and the curved portion of the standard 1, is a pair of gripping plates 8 which have their outer extremities 9 formed with teeth so that the same may be more easily adapted to grip a clinker and to securely hold the same while it is removed from the furnace.
The rocking lever 4 is operated by means of a hand operating bar 10 which extends longitudinally and substantially parallel with respect to the standard 1, having one end 11 pivotally connected between the bent portion 5 of the lever 4 and said lever, by means of apivot pin 12. The other end of the operating'rod 10 extends rearwardlyto a point adjacent the handle 2 on the standardl, where an integral loop 13 is formed thereon which is ofiset from the rod and disposed at right angles to the same. This loop 13 is adapted to surround and loosely engage the standard 1, so that the same may slide freely thereon for a purpose hereinafter stated. Projecting from the loop 13, is the extremity 14 of the rod 10, and said extremity is positioned in a single plane with the handle 2 of the standard 1, and is adapted to form a gripping means or han dle, whereby the operating rod 10 may be moved or reciprocated to rock the lever 4.
From the above description, it will be obvious that when it is desired to remove clinkers from the furnace, this device is grasped'by the handle 2 of the standard 1, and the handle 14 of the operating rod 10 is drawn back, whereby the lever 4 will be rocked, and the plate secured to the extremity of the samewill be drawn away from the gripping plate on the end of the standard. The device is then inserted in the furna'ce, and upon moving the gripping plates toward each other, by a forward movement of-the handle 14, a clinker may be firmly and securely held therebetween and Within the drawing.
"drawn from the furnace.
The construction employed in this device is of extreme simplicity, as the entire device consistsof only three main parts: the standard, the rocking lever, and the operating rod. These parts may be made of metal bars preferably cylindrical, although .the
bent. portion of the lever 4 is preferably may be secured thereto by rivets or any 7 other desired form of fastening means.
The construction used at the rear end of the operating rod 10; that is the loop 13 which surrounds the standard '1, affords ,easy'and simple slidable connection between the said rod and standard, and owing to the fact that the said connection is an integral part of the rod, the same may be easily and simply constructed. V
The construction embodied in this in- V vention greatly reduces the cost of producimplement.
tion-of a device of this character, which is a very essentlal requlrement m this kind of From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved clinker tongs, the manner of applying the same to use, and. the operation thereof, will be readily Copies of this patent may be obtained for understood, and it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive, and efiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
A device of the class described comprising a standard formed of a metal bar having one end bent arcuate shaped, a gripping plate with a toothed outer edge secured to the end of the standard, the straight portion of said standard adjacent its curved end having flattened opposite sides, an offset at the other end of said standard bent laterally and disposed in a single plane with said arcuate end, a curved metal bar having one end formed with straight opposite sides, said end being bent back upon itself intermediate its ends in spaced relation and pivotally connected with the flattened portion of the standard adjacent its bent portion, said bar having a gripping plate with a toothed outer edge secured to its opposite .end, an operating lever extending longithe extremity of said lever projecting from the loop in a; single plane with the handle of the standard.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
