To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, Fonnns'r L. CANTRALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ivy, in the county of Modoc and State of California, have invented certain new and g useful Improvements in Signals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as, will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to -a signaling mechanism, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a call system for use in hotels, club houses, or like places, and to electrically connect a plurality of signaling devices to a clock, so that signaling devices may be operated at predetermined times.
Another object of this invention is to construct a mechanism for controlling the operation of the signaling devices, so that hour of the day, y

A still further object of this invention is which is interposed within the connection between the clock and the various signaling mechanism for sounding each and everyone of the signals synchronously, in case of fire or when it is desired to awakenor call all of the occupants of the building.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing'the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which a Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of the signaling mechanism, Fig. 2 is a section through the clock dial, showing the contacts and the manner of connectingthe contacts and the clock hands to electrical conductors, Fig. 3 isa section through one of the signaling means operating boards or dials, Fig. 4 is a rear view of the switch for operating all of the signaling mechanisms synchronously, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates an ordinary eight-day clock, which has a dial 2, about which are arranged the numerals for designating the hour and the spaces or indications for designati ng the half hours. The clock 2 has the ordmary type of minute hand 3 and hour hand 4, which are carried by a spindle 5, positioned centrally of and extending transversely through the dial 2, as is ordinary in the constructionof clocks of this nature. The hour hand 1 has a contact 6 secured to the under surface thereof a short distance inwardly of its outer end, which contact is provided for engagement with contacts 7 which are arranged about the face of the dial 2, and in alinement with the various lflOllI' and half hour designations of the clock ace. Each of the contacts 7 has an electrical conducting wire 8 connected thereto, which extends therefrom, and is in turn connected to branch wires 9. The branch wires 9 are connected to contacts 10, which are carried by the dial '11. The dial 11 has numerical designations and graduating marks formed upon the face thereof to correspond with the graduations and hour designations which are carried by or formed upon the face of the clock'dial 2. The contacts 10 are positioned in alinement with the various designations upon the dial lland they are con nected, through the medium of the Wires 9, to the corresponding contacts formed upon the dial 2. For instance, the contact 10 which is carried by the dial 11 and in alinement with the designation 12, is connected,
by means of one of the wires 9 to the wire 8, which is in turn connected to the contact 7 which is in alinement with the hour designation upon the dial 2 of the clock.
Any desired number of dials corresponding to the dial 11 may be employed in the circuit, it depending upon the number of rooms or places wherein it is desired to place the same. The dial 11 has a contact hand 12 pivotally carried thereby, which hand has a contact 13 formed upon its underesurface a short distance inwardly from its end and positioned for engagement with the contacts 10. The pin 14, upon which the hand 12 is pivotally mounted, has connection with a signaling mechanism 15, which is shown in the drawings as an ordinary electric bell, through the medium of an electrical conducting wire 16 which is connected to one pole of the signaling mechanism 15, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1
of the drawings. namely the pole indicated by .the binding post 17, and the signaling mechanism 15, is connected to an electrical conducting wire 18, pole of a battery or series of batteries 20, as is indicated at 2l in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The spindle 5 upon which the hour and minute hands 3 and 4 respectively of the clock construction 1 are mounted, is connected to the pole 22 of the battery, by meansof an electrical conductor 23, so that when the contact 13 carried by the contact hand 12, engages one of the contacts upon thedial '11. and the hour hand 4: upon the clock dial engages the contact corresponding to the one which is engaged by the hand 12, a complete circuit will be closedthrough the battery and the signaling mechanism 15, which will sound or operate the signaling mechanism the length of time which the hour-hand contacts or engages'the'contact which is indicated by upon the dial 2 of the clock. The contact hand 12 may beset at any position about the dial 11, for sounding an alarm by the signaling mechanism 15, when the hour, the hand l2 upon the dial 11, is reached by the hour hand of the clock construction 1.; s
The Wires 8 have a plurality of branch Wires 25 connected thereto, which are connected to contacts 26. The'contacts 26 are positioned about a dial 27, which dial is graduated to correspond with the gradua tions of theclock dial 2. The dial 27' has a contact hand 27 pivotally carried therei by, which has a contact 28 formed upon its outer end. and positioned for engagement with the contacts 26. The contact hand27 is connected by a wire 29 to the pole '22 of the batteries 20.
The spindle or shaft 30 upon which the contact hand 27 is mounted, has a gear 31 mounted thereupon, which meshes with a second gear 32.- The gear 32 is mounted upon a shaft 33 which is carried by the easing 34 which incloses the -mechanism and extends rearwardly from thedia'l 27 The shaft 33 has 'a' coil spring 35 coiled thereabout for rotating the gear32 uponthe unwinding of the spring 35. -A-key 36 is secured to the shaft 33 and is provided for inding the spring 35 preparatory tothe unwinding rotation of the same.-

The dial 27, the contacts carried thereby and the contact hand 27 are provided for ringing all of the signals which are connected to the clock 1, in case of a fire, or when it is desired to call all of the occupants of the rooms in'which various signaling devices are situated. Any suitable construction may be employed for holding this mechanisminactive, which may be released for permitting of the action of the spring 35 for-operating the device.
In the operation of the improved signaling mechanism: whenthe device is used. in a hotel, the person occupying the room in Whicha signaling mechanism 15 is positioned,

set the same so as to sound or operate the signaling mechanism 15, at any desired hour or fraction of an hour during the day, owing to the fact that when the contact hand 12 engages With any one of the contacts 10, a circuit will be closed through the signaling mechanism, the clock 1, and the batteries 20, when the hour hand reaches the contact upon the dial 2 which corresponds with the contact upon the dial 11, with Which it. is engaged by the hand 12, thereby operating the signaling mechanism and calling the person.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the advantages of construction and of the method ;of' operation of the improved signal will be readily apparent to those skilled inthe art to which this invention appertains and, While in the foregoing description, the principle of the operation of this invention has been described together with various features of construction, it is to be understood that certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be altered to suit practical conditionsprovidedsuch alterations are comprehen'ded Within the scope of What is claimed.
What is claimed is 7 1. Ina-signalingmechanism, the combination with a clock, and signaling devices electrijcally connected to said clock for the soundin ot ;a signal at predetermined times, of
means for operating said signaling mechanism at any time, including a dial, a plurality of contacts carried by said dial and po sitioned to correspond with the hour and half hour designated on the clock dial, a hand pivotally carried by said dial and having a contact formed upon its outer end for engagement with said dial carried contact, and means for governing the speed of travel of said hand about said dial.

In a signaling system, the combination, with an ordinary eight-day clock, signaling devices electrically connected to said clock, and means for operating said electricalsignaling devices at predetermined times, of means interposed in the electrical connection between said clock and said signaling mechanisms for operating the signaling mechanism irrespective of said clock, said last named means including a dial, a plurality of contacts carried by said dial, a spindle carried by said dial, a handle carried by said spindle and having a contact formed thereon for engagement with the dial-carried contact, means for imparting rotation to said spindle for moving said hand about said dial, and means for governing the speed of travel of the hands about said dial.
