To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINUS WOLF, subject of the German Emperor, residing at Zurich, Switzerland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Automobile- Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automobile and other lamps and has for its object to pro.
vide a new and improved lamp for this purpose which can be easily and quickly lighted regardless of wind or weather conditions.
The front lamps of an automobile are usually acetylene lamps and when it is desired to light them it is a common practice to open up the lamp, light a match and then light the gas. Ordinarily, however, the lamp is so exposed to the wind that great difiiculty is met with in lighting these lamps.
The present invention obviates this difficulty. j
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1- isa view of a burner embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the burner illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a large sectional view of the automatic igniting apparatus. Fig. 41: is a sectional view taken on line r-4. of Fig. 3. Fig". is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a view showing the casing of the lighting device as formed and before being bent into shape. Fig. 7 is a view showing one end of the casing. Fig. 8 is a view showing the other end of the casing. Fig. 9 is a view showing an ordinary gas burner.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
Referring now to the drawings, I have shown a burner 1 of an automatic acetylene gas lamp, said burner having two branches 2, provided with gas openings 3. Fastened to the burner is an automatic igniting device consisting of a casing .L containing a shaft 5 carrying a tooth or ratchet piece 6 which has a handle 7 projecting through a slot 8 in the casing. A second tooth or ratchet piece 9 is associated with the piece 6. These two ratchet pieces have teeth arranged so that when the piece 6 is moved in one direction, these teeth will slide past the teeth of the piece 9 but when moved in the other di rection, the teeth will be engaged so that the piece 9 will be carried with the piece 6.
A spring 10 surrounds the shaft and is connected at one end to the fixed part and at the other end to the piece 6. This spring acts both to keep the part 6 pressed toward the part 9 and also to cause it to be retracted when it is rotated by means of the handle 7. The piece 9 is roughened at its periphery and is in contact with the piece 11 of pyrophorous metal.
The casing 4: is provided with a discharge opening 12 in proximity to the piece of pyrophorous metal 11. This metal 11 is confined in a guide way 13 and is pressed toward the piece 9 by the spring pressed engaging part 14 to which is attached one end of the spring 15, the other end of which is fastened to a fixed part. The particular casing herein shown is illustrated in Fig. 6 before it is formed into shape. The portion containing the tongue 16 is bent around so that the tongue is inserted in the hole .17 as illustrated in Fig. 4.. The other portion 18 is bent around as shown in Fig. 3, the slot 8 being formed between these two portions. A portion 19 is arranged to be bent around the burner and is held in place by means of the bolt 20 which passes through the openings 21. Part 19 is provided with a slot 22 at the edge of which is a lug having an opening 23 so that the spring 15 can be fastened thereto. The end piece 2 1 nearest the part 9 is provided with a projection 25 to which is connected a piece which when bent forms the recep tacle 13 as shown in Fig. 3. The end piece 24 as well as the end piece 26 are provided with projections 27 and indentations 28. The body portion 4 is also provided with similar projections 27 and indentations 28. When the end pieces are placed in position the end projections 27 on the casing A are expanded or riveted so as to hold the end pieces in position. I prefer to arrange the device so that the part 19 which passes around the burner loosely engages it thus permitting the casing to be rotated on the burner, particularly when an ordinary burner as that shown in Fig. 9 is used. The discharge opening 12 is preferably located opposite the center line of the burner so that it will remain in proper position in relation to the burner even when the casing 1 is rotated completely on the burner.
