FIRE-POT FOR STOVES AND FURNACES.
To all 20 item it may concern Be it known that I, ANTON OHNEMUS,
a citizen of the United States," and a "resi dent of Quincy, in the county of Adams and" My present inventlon relates generally to improvements in stoves and furnaces, and more particularly to an improved fire pot therefor, my object being to provide a fire pot in the use of which the hydrocarbons escaping from fresh fuel will be better con sumed within a stove or furnace, and the Waste of heat units so often amounting to a considerable percentage of the total heat efficiency. of the fuels, may be reduced to a minimum. In order to accomplish this I propose generally the construction of a fire pot in upper and lower sections, the lower section of which has vertical :air channels communicating at their lower ends with and forming flues in which the air in its passage therethrough, is pre-heatechthe upper section of the fire pot having channels communicating with the channels of the lower section and also extending vertically, these channels of the upper section further communicating with vertical slots extending from the top to the bottom of the upper section and through which the pro-heated air finds its way into the upper portion only of the firepot, thus more effectively commingling with the hydrocarbons driven off of the fresh fuel by the heat of the fire, and enabling a thorough consumption of the heat units ordinarily wasted by the escape of these hydro-carbons.
In the accompanying drawing wherein my. invention is shown in detail, and which forms a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section through one side of a fire pot constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal view of the upper section of the firepot, being partly in top plan and partly in section. Fig. 3 is a top plan. view of a portion of the lower section. Fig. 4: is a detail sectional perspective of a portion of the upper section of the firepot, and Fig.5 is a similar view of a por tion of the lower section.
Referring now to these figures, the upper and lower sections of my improved fire pot, the relation between which in operative p0,-

sition-is bestseen in .Fig. 1, are indicated therein at and B respectively. p As best seen byreferenceto Figs. 1 and3,
the lower section B of the firepot has a plurality of vertical channels 13, the sides of which are entirely inclosed, which form fines upwardly throughwhich the air may find its way from the ash pit upon the wall C of which the lower section B is seated, a section of the grate D appearing in Fig. 1 in order to plainly establish the relationship between the upper and lower sections of the firepot and the adjacent portions of the The upperedge of the lower section B has a surrounding groove B extending in a tortuous manner around the upper extended rings 7) of the several vertical channels B, so as to enable the upper ends-of these channels to fit closely against the lower edge of the upper section A, the surrounding flange A of which extends into the channel 13 as plainly seen in Fig. 1, thus providing for the reception of suitable binding material as shown, at C in Fig. 1 joining the upper and lower sections just mentioned.
By referring now to the upper section A it will be seen that in addition to its flange A best seen in Fig. 4:, it is provided with spacing lugs a which engage the inner side of the groove B in which the flange A.
other so as to bring the upper ends of the channels B into perfect registry with. the lower ends of the vertical channels A of the upper section, which latter channels extend vertically within the said section, being similar in number to those of the lower sec tion. although closed at their upper ends and provided with vertical slots A extending through the inner wall of the upper section A from its lower to its upper edge and thus for practically its entire width. to permit of the passage of the air pre-heated during its movement through the several channels 13 to find its way into the upper portion only of the firepot.
A. construction as thus described is well adapted to carry out the objects beforementioned is simple and inexpensive, and has been found to be highly effective for the purpose intended.
I claim A firepot the wall of which is formed in upper and lowersections, the lower section of Which is provided With spaced vertical air channels surrounded by solid portions of said section and formingfiues for the passage and pre-heating of air, and the upper, section of which is provided With similar Vertical flues, closed at their upper ends and provided With side slots communicating With the interior of the upper portion of the firepot whereby to supply thereto the air pro-heated in its passage through the chan- Gnples-pf this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
