JAMES S. LAVELL. OF SCEHENECTADY. NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NRY C. FA'GAL. OF SCHENEGTADY. NEW YORK.
PISTON PACKING-RING.
Application filed September 19. 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. Jun-1s S. L \vI-:I.I,. a citizen of the l'nited States. residing at Schenectady. county of Schenectady. aml State of New York. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lis-ton Packing-Rings. of which the following i a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construc tion and combination of parts hereinafter "described and. subsequently claimed.
Reference may he had to the accompairving drawingsand the reference characters marked thereon. which form a part of this specification. Similar character refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of a pistonpacking-ring made in accordam-e With my invention. l ig. i is a view in side elevation of the same. Fig. is a view in side elevation. partly in section. of the cut resilient inner ring.
The principal object of the invention is to provide for a close contact between the piston-ring and the cylinder. throughout the peripheral extent of the ring.
In carrying out my invention I employ a cut resilient inner ring. 1. adapted to be con fined under compression within an outer ring formed of three equal segments. '3. ra beted at their ends. o. to make lapping engagement with each other and form substantiaily tight joints when the ring is confined within the cylinder. The ends of the cut inner ring. 1. preferably form a lapping joint. as by cutting through the ring diagonally. as shown at in Fig.
The three segments. 2. of the outer ring have their outer surfaces turned or dressed to form together a true cylindrical surface adapted to closely fit the interior of the cylinder for which the ring is intended. and each of the segments. 2. is made thicker at about its middle than at its ends. thus providing at its middle a point. or comparatively small area. of colitact with the outer surface of the cut inner ring. 1. -The ends of the respective segments. 2. are thus slightly spaced away at 5 from the inner ring. 1. thus providing for a slight rocking movement of the separate segments. 2. about their respective points of contact. 1. with the inner ring. permitting each segment to ad- Specification of Letters Patent.

in t itself to the inner wall of the cvlinder independently of the other segments. .\s' the interior of the cylinder becomes worn. this capability for independent self-adjustment of the egments. L. make ver v close contact with the inner surface of the cylinder.
By employing three segments in the ollte! ring aml having the inner resilient ring bear upon the re pective segments only at their middle points. the resilient force of the inner ring is always effectively and e ually dis triluited among the segments of the outer ring: and the rocking movement. whereby each segment of the outer ring is free to adjust itself. causes the outward pressure of the inner ring to be quite uniformly di tri uted to all part of the outer ring.
.\s a preferred form for the segments. 3. l have shown the inner surface of each seg ment formed as an arc eccentric to the outer urface. so that ea h segment is meniscoidal in form and gradually tapers from its thicker middle portion to its respect ve end hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent is l. pistoirpacking-ring comprising an outer segmental ring divided into three equal segments. the outer surfaces of which foriu a cylindrical surface corresponding in diameter with the interior of the cylinder for which the ring is adapted. and a cut resilient inner ring adapted to be confined umler com pression within said segmental ring. the several segments being thicker at the middle than at the ends. whereby they make contact only at their middle with said inner ring.
'3. )iston-packing-ring comprising an outer segmental ring having three equal meniscoidal segments. each having an outer surface forming an arc of the same radius as the interior of the cylinder for which the ring is adapted. and an inner surface forming an arc eccentric tozsaid outer surface. and a cut resilient inner" ring adapted tolueontined under compression within said segmental outer ring. in simple Contact with the middle points of the respective segments.
In testimony whereof. I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of September. 1911.
