Description

G. S. VAUGHN.
MIXING VALVE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.I3. IsIs.
l, 181,702. Patented May 2,1916.
`\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\YIIIIIIIIIIIIn GEORGE SYLVESTER VAUGHN, 0F FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE- HALF TO ROBERT G. HALL, OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
. MIXING-VALVE.
Application filed August 13, 1915. Serial No. 45,340.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE SYLVESTER VAUGHN., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Franklin, in the oo unty of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mixing- Valve, of which the following isa full,\clear`, and exact description.
My invention relates to mixing valvesfor explosive engines; and the object thereof 1s to provide a simple and efficient valve wherein the size of the opening through which the gas passes can be varied to suit the particular conditions under which the engine will have to operate. l Y
With the above and other objects in View, the nature of which will more fully appear as the descriptionproceeds, the invention consists in the no vel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and cla1med.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the lapplication, similar characters of reference indicatel corresponding parts in all the views. I
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the valve applied to the engine at the inlet valve; Fig. 2 is a face elevation of the mixing valve; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section 4on line 3-3, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 4-4, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the member whereby the size of the opening through which the gas enters can be varied. Y
Referring to the drawings, '6` represents a casing engaging the inlet valve 7 of the `engine. A portion of the casing extends from the inlet valve and has an opening 8 covered by a bed or plate 9 detachably secured theretoby any suitable means. The plate has openings 10 and 11 each surrounded by a collar 12 and 13 respectively whereby conduits can be securedl to the collars, the opening 10 forming the fuel inlet and the opening 11 the air inlet to the casing. These openings are controlled by a valve 14 mounted to slide on the bed 9 within the casing 6 and operable .from the governor (not shown) by a rod 15. The valve has an opening 16 adapted to register with the opening 10; and when said opening -fully registers with the opening 10 the lower end of the valve fully uncovers the opening 11.
Specification of Letters Patent.
-tive to the air taken in.
' openin Patented May 2, 191e.
` Although the amount of fuel and air taken in is controlled by the governor of the engine, it is often desirable to either increase or decrease the amount of fuel rela- For this purpose the plate 9 is providedwith a recess 17 extending from one side of the plate to the fuel opening 10. The' width of the recess is substantially that of the opening l0. Fitting snugly into the recess is a member 18 one end of which projects out ofthe plate and whereat a slotted, lateral head 19 is provided. The slotted head is engaged by a threaded stud 20 provided in the bed. To each side.V of the head-19 the stud carries nuts 20 whereby the member 18 can be adjusted within the slot and thereby the size of the opening 10 varied.
It will be noted that the adjustment of the member 18 is in a direction transverse to the movement of the valve 14.; consequently the variation of the size. of the opening will only decrease the amount offuel that can pass therethrough without the said being affected as to the control thereo by the valve.14.
I claim:
In a. mixingl valve of the class described, a casing having a detachable plate, said plate having openings forming a fuel and an air inlet to said casing, a valve in said casing mounted to slide on said plate and whereby the inlets are controlled` said plate having a recess extending at right angles to the movement of the valve andI leading from the fuel inlet through one side of the plate, a member fitting into the recess and having a slotted head at the projecting end thereof, a threaded stud in said plate engaging the slotted head, and means on said `stud for engaging the head of the member wherebv the same is secured to the plate and whereby the size of the fuel opening may be varied in a direction at right angles to the displacement of the valve.
In testimony WhereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE SYLVESTER VAUGHN.
