To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVALTER R. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Display Devices, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention relates to display devices for show cases and the like and has for its object the provision of a simple and eflicient device of this character capable of being easily rotated and shifted about in the show case to convenient or desired positions.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and more particularly set forth in the subjoined claims.

Fig. 2 is a section of the same taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 but showing the floor of the show case removed. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 except that the display rack holding means is moved to the opposite end of the track than that shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmental section taken on line 55 of Fig.4; and Fig. 6 is a fragmental section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
My invention is capable of embodiment in show cases and numerous other devices and positions where it is desired to display goods. I have shown it as fitted in a show case but from the following description it will be seen that numerous other uses may be found for it which will be obvious from the description.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, a show case 10 is provided with a bottom 11 at its lower side and a second bottom 12 parallel with the firstbottom and spaced therefrom. Between these two bottoms are mounted the portions of my device for maintaining the display rack and visible portions of the device. The only visible portions of the device are a standard 13 carrying at its Specification of Letters Patent.

top a web 141 which supports a plurality of rails 15. I have shown two rails but it is understood that more or less may be used when so desired. The standard 13 is mounted in a bracing member 16 which extends through a slot 17 in the floor 12. The mem- --ber 16 is carried on a truck or carriage 18 between floors 11 and 12. The carriage 18 is provided with an axle 19 near one end and on axle 19 are two wheels 20 adapted to fit in the channel tracks 21 at each side of the carriage. The other end of the carriage is supported on wheels 22 mounted on stud shafts 23. The stud shafts 23 are secured in suitable portions of the carriage 18 by means of pins 24 or their equivalent.
The standard 13 is journaled in the mernber 16 as at 25 and in the carriage 18 as at 26, so that it is free to rotate in said bearings and also to permit the carriage to be moved longitudinally of the standard. At-
the lower end of the standard is a head or casting 27 in which is mounted an axle 28. Near the ends of the axle 28 are supporting wheels 29 which are loosely mounted thereon. Pins 30 are provided in the axle 28 to prevent longitudinal movement of wheels 29 on said axle. It will thus be seen that the standard is carried entirely by the axle 28 and wheels 29 and that the carriage 18 mounted in its track 21 serves to hold the standard in upright condition.
On portions of the carriage 18 near the stud shafts 23, are locking members 31 which normally engage the ends of axle 28 to lock the axle and standard 13 against rotary movement about the axis of the standard. The wheels 29 are mounted on a track 32 which is parallel with track 21 and is situated between the rails of track 21. This arrangement provides means whereby the axle 28 is normally in alinement with the stud shafts 23 when the carriage is in its position shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This position is the position of. the carriage when the dis play device is substantially. central of the show case.
At one end of track 32 is a circular track 33 which is positioned so that upon moving the carriage from its position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 1, the supporting member of standard 13 is brought to a position concentric with the circular track so that the standard and supporting rails 15 may be rotated in order to shift goods or garments held on said rails. The track 21 is provided with depressions 31 opposite the center of circular track 33 so that upon the carriage reaching its position shown in Fig. 4, wheels 22 are adapted to move into said depressions, thereby lowering the corre sponding end of carriage 18 and permitting the locking members 31 to descend out of engagement with the ends of axle 28 to permit the free rotary movement of axle 28 and standard 13 about the axis of the circular track. In order to prevent the carriage 18 from moving through the depressions 34, a portion 35 is provided on the upper flanges of the track 21 so that the wheels 22 cannot pass through the depressions 34;. This means serves as a lock to prevent the carriage moving too far toward the open side of the show case and to insure positioning the supporting means of the standard cen" trally of the track 33.
The carriage 18 is provided with portions 36 which overlie the circular track when the carriage is in its position shown in Fig. 4 so that should excessive weight or strain be placed on rails 15 the wheels 29 will engage such portions 36 of the carriage and facilitate maintaining the device in upright position.
The device is preferably formed of such a size that the rails 15 mounted on spider 14 will be long enough to support a sul'ficient number of garments, or other articles on display to fill the show case and at the same time permit the standard 13 to be rotated when the device is in its position shown in Fig. 4, so that the device may be rotated in order to change the position of the articles 1n the case and for convenience in reaching the articles when it is desired to remove or change them.
On the track 32, I preferably provide flanges 37 which facilitate maintaining the wheels 29 on said track 32. In moving the Wheeled support from the circular track to the track 32, in some instances the wheeled support and bars 15 may not be moved so that wheels 29 register with the track 32. In this instance the end of one or the other of flanges 37 will engage one of the wheels 29 and retard the corresponding end of the Wheel carriage until the other of the wheels 29 is brought into registry with the track 32. Ihis provides means for guiding the Wheeled support onto track 32. On the track 33 is provided a flange 38 which is adapted to engage the wheels 29 and facilitate maintalning the standard 13 at the axis of track 33. The flange 38 serves the further purpose of preventing the whole device from being moved backwardly into the case when the wheels 29 are not in registry with the track 32. It will be seen from Fig. 6 that the flange 38 would securely lock the movable parts against movement back into the case 10. This provides means whereby it is impossible to move the movable parts back into the case when the bars 15 are not in proper position to be moved back, thereby preventing injury to the walls of the case.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction, I do not desire to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and changes as come within the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A display device comprising a substantially vertical standard; a display rack carried on the standard; a movable device carrying the entire weight of the standard and rack; and a carriage independent of the movable device maintaining the standard in upright condition, said movable device being adapted for rotary movement with respect to the carriage.
2. A display device comprising a carriage; a substantially vertical standard journaled in the carriage; a display rack fixed on said standard; and a movable device independent of the carriage and carrying the entire weight of the standard and controlling rotation of the latter with respect to the carriage.
3. A display device comprising a base; a track; a carriage on said track; a substantially vertical standard journled in the carriage; a display rack on the standard; a movable device independent of the carriage carrying the entire weight of the standard and rack; and locks engaging the movable device locking the latter, said standard and said rack against rotation in relation to the carriage.
4. A display device comprising a substantially vertical standard; a display rack on said standard; a movable device carrying the entire weight of the standard and rack; a carriage independent of the movable device maintaining the standard in upright condition; and tracks independent of each other upon which the movable device and carriage are mounted, said movable device and car riage having different directions of movement on their respective tracks.
5. A dis lay device comprising a track; a carriage n ounted on the track and having bearings thereon; a vertical standard journaled in said bearings; a track parallel with the first-mentioned track; a circular track communicating with the second-mentioned track; and a wheeled support secured to the lower end of the standard, mounted on the second-mentioned track and adapted to traverse the circular track.
6. A display device comprising a track having depressions therein and portions extending toward and directly over the depressions; a carriage mountedon the track and having bearings therein, said depressions and portions cooperating to form a stop for the carriage; a verticalfstandard journaled in said bearings; and a wheeled support carrying the entire weight of said standard.
7. A display device comprising a track having depressions therein and portions extending toward and directly over the depressions; a carriage mounted on the track and having bearings therein, said depressions and portions cooperating to form a stop for the carriage; a track parallel with the first-mentioned track; a circular track at one end of and communicating with the second-memtioned track and opposite said depressions; a vertical standard journaled in said bearings; and a wheeled support carrying said standard, mounted on said second-mentioned track and adapted to traverse said circular track to rotate said standard.
8. A display device comprising a track having depressions therein; a carriage mounted on the track and having bearings therein; a vertical standard journaled in said bearings; a wheeled support carrying said standard; a track supporting the wheeled support locking members on said carriage and normally engaging said wheeled support looking the latter against rotary movement, the carriage upon moving into said depressions being adapted to move the locking members out of engagement with the wheeled support, permitting the latter to rotate about its axis.
9. A display device comprising a track having depressions therein; a carriage mounted on the track and having bearings therein; a track parallel with the first-mentioned track; a circular track at one end of and connecting with the second-mentioned track and opposite said depressions; a vertical standard journaled in said bearings; a wheeled support carrying said standard, and mounted on said second-mentioned. track; and locking members on said carriage engaging said wheeled support when the carriage is on the first-mentioned track out of said depressions and out of engagement with the wheeled support when the carriage is in said depressions.
10. A display device comprising a track; a wheeled support on said track; a standard secured to and supported by the wheeled support; a carriage engaging the standard and holding the latter in vertical position; locking members on the carriage and adapted to engage the wheeled support and lock the standard against rotation; and atrack supporting the carriage and having a horizontal portion adapted to hold the locking members in engagement with the Wheeled support and an inclined portion adapted to move the carriage vertically when engaged thereby and disengage the locking members from the wheeled support.
11. A display device comprising a track; an axle; wheels journaled on the axle and mounted on the track; a standard secured to and supported by the axle; a carriage having bearings thereon engaging the standard and holding the latter in upright condition, two of the wheels of the carriage being in axial alinement with said axle; locking members on the carriage, engaging the ends of the axle and locking the standard against rotation in said bearings of the carriage; and a track supporting the carriage and having a depression therein adapted to lower the carriage and disengage the looking members from the axle.
12. A display device comprising a circular track; a straight track communicating with the circular track; a wheeled support mounted on the circular track and adapted to traverse the straight track; a straight track parallel with the first mentioned straight track; a carriage on the second mentioned straight track; a standard journaled in the carriage and secured to the wheeled support; and a stop on the second mentioned track adapted to stop the carriage and wheeled support when the standard is in axial alinement with the axis of the circular track.
13. A display device comprising a circular track; a straight track communicating with the circular track; a wheeled support supported on the circular track and adapted to traverse the straight track; a straight track parallel with the first mentioned straight track;.a carriage on the second mentioned straight track; a standard journaled in the carriage and secured to the wheeled support; and a flange on the circular track adapted to lock the carriage against movement on its track except when the wheels of the wheeled support are in registration with the first mentioned straight track.
14. A display device comprising a straight track having a depression therein and a portion extending toward the depression and cooperating therewith to form a stop; a carriage mounted on the straight track; a straight track parallel with the first mentioned track; a wheeled support mounted on the second mentioned straight track; a standard secured to and supported by the wheeled support and journaled in the carriage; locking members on the carriage and engaging the wheeled support locking the latter against rotation; and a circular track at the end of and communicating with the second mentioned straight track, the stop on the first mentioned track being positioned so that when it is engaged by the carriage the standard is brought into axial name to this specification, in the presence of alinement With the circular track and the two subscribing Witnesses, on this 22nd day locking members disengaged from the of April, A.
