Thisv invention relates generally to toys and more particularly `to figure toys in Vvwhich the movements or motions of the fig- Vures are produced by a mechanism com monly known as a sand wheel motor in which sand escaping from one compartment or receptacle falls upon and operates a wheel or disk, and then accumulates below; the device being reversible after the fashion of an hourglass in order to produce a repetition of the operations by the return `movement o f the lsand or other granular material.
One object of an exceedingly simple and highly efficient device; and another object is to provide a toy of the kind described which in its manufacture will be exceedingly inexpensive inasmuch as easily obtained elements are utilized in the assemblage or combination.
lVith these objects in view, andcertain others which will appear. hereinafter the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

venience of manufacture these cross partitions at the top and bottom may each be in a continuous piece, contacting with the opposite sides of the case intermediate the ends as shown at 18, thereby providing a stronger device, and at the same time one which is more quickly assembled. The oblique partitions constructed and arranged as hereinbefore described not only provide the V vshaped hoppers 17 at each end, but they also provide a hexagonal shaped central chamber in which thev sand wheel 19 is mounted and turned, this wheel being of novel construction as more fully explained hereafter. The wheel 19 is attached to a spindle 20, mounted upon a shaft 21, the ends of which extend through the front and back of the case and turn freely therein. To the ends of this shaft 21 are connected the arms of the iigures 22, which may be of pasteboard or any other light material and jointed in the usual or any preferred manner, so that as the shaft is rotated through the medium of the sand wheel these figures will be caused to describe circles, of which the shaft is the center, and in so doing will produce various gymnastic feats or movements.
lVhere the partitions 15 cross each `other at 16 1 arrange a tubular member 23, which may be an ordinary eyelet, and seated upon one end of the tubular member is a ball valve 24 which is preferably an ordinary lead ball or sphere. Connected to this ball valve is an ordinary screw eye comprising the shank 25 and ring 26 lthe threaded end of the shank being screwed into the lead ball, and this ring is adapted to engage the opposite end of the tubular member or eyelet when the device is reversed. The ball valve seats upon the eyelet and cuts off the passage therethrough, whereas, when the ring is in engagement with the eyelet or tubular member the ball valve is unseated and the sand can flow freely through and around the ring and shank. This construction is inexpensive, thoroughly practical and highly efficient in operation.
Each partition 15 has two or more openings 27 to one side of the eyelet. and adjacent thereto through which the sand can pass into one of the side compartments 2S which has a single opening 29 so positioned as to discharge the sand into the adjacent A pocket 30 of the sand wheel 19 causing the lar member and consequently the sand is discharged through the openings 27 and 29 into the sand wheel compartment or operating chamber.
The sand after operating the wheel 19, passes the lower end of the central compartment and the bottom thereof being V shaped the sand escapes through the eyelet or tubular member Q3 inasmuch as the skeleton support of the valve is uppermost and the valve unseated and the sand passes freely into and is accumulated in the bottom of the compartment 17.
When the sand has been exhausted from the upper compartment the device as a Whole is reversed and then the lower ball valve seats upon the tubular member and the sand in the compartment 17 is caused to discharge through the opening 27 as previously described.
The sand Wheel 19 is preferably con- Structed of thin sheet metal, the central or hub portion thereof being rigidly connected to the sleeve or spindle 20, and around its periphery are the sand receiving pockets 30. These pockets are preferably formed integral with the wheel by producing radial slits 31 which extend from the outer edge of the disk inwardly a4 definite distance. A slit 32 at right angles to the slit 31 is then produced, this slit 32 extending about half way toward the next adjacent slit 31, and then a slit 33 extending outwardly at right angles is produced, said slit extending the desired distance, and the portion 34 between the slits 31, 32 and 33 is then bent upwardly and the detachedl portion of metal is bent upon the radial ine 35 until the edge of the upwardly bent portion contacts with the portion left standing, thereby producing a substantially V shaped pocket of suitable capacity for receiving the sand discharged through the opening 29. A wheel constructed according to this method is cheap and simple and can be quickly and easily struck up from metal or any other suitable material.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that I provide a toy of the kind described which tageous features of construction, operation and manufacture hereinbeforev referred to. Having thus described my invention, what claim is:-
1. A toy of the kind described comprising a casing, a sand wheel journaled therein, oblique partitions crossing each other, a tubular member at the junctions of said partitions; a valve located in said tubular member, and openings produced in said partitions as set forth.

A toy of the kind described comprising a casing having a transparent front, a shaft journaled in said casing and having figures on the end of shaft, a sand Wheel mounted on said shaft within the casing, a hopper above and a hopper tubular members in the bottom of each hopper, a ball valve engaging each tubular member each ball valve having a retaining device, each hopper `having a discharge opening for directing the sand to the wheel, said sand passing through the opposite tubular member to the opposite hopper.
6. In a toy of the kind described, a sand wheel formed from a single piece, and comprising a disk, the edge of which is'slit radially inward, then circumferentially and then radially outward a distance less than the first named slit, the free end being bent upwardly and thenradially as set forth.

In a toy of the kind described, a casing having a hopper at leach end, and a sand wheel journaled in the casing between said hoppers, each hopper bottom having an opening for the discharge of sand upon the wheel, each hopper bottom also having an opening for the escape of the sand operating the wheel, a ball valve located within each hopper to close said escape opening, the stem of said valve passing through said escape opening and a retaining device upon the opposite end of stem.
