in the State of New York, have invented 'al certain new and useful Improvement in Fire-Boxes, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact descrip tion thereof.
My invention relates particularly to loco` motive lire-boxes and especially locomotive fire-boxes adapted toutilize `tubes for the;
transference of heat to the water around the fire-box." v
The object of my invention is to provide a fire-box equipped with water-tubes, which is so arranged that 'the expansion and contraction of the various parts will not loosen the tubes in their sockets; In order to carry out this portion of my invention the tubes are preferably curved at least in part whereas the ends of the tubes are connected to portions of the fire-box which are rigidly supported in a pedestal-like manner at'the front and rear of the fire-box'v by substantially vertical plates.
Another object of my invention is to provide a. ire-box, and especially a fire-box of the above type, which is so arranged that a man can readily enter the interior of the water/space so as to inspect, clean lor wash the interior, or to make repairs either to the tubes or other portions of the crown and roof sheets and the staying means attached thereto without the necessity of disconnecting any of the parts other than the man* hole covers provided for this purpose.
A' further object of my invention is to provide a tire-box with tubes so arranged'that they effectively confine the flames and heated gases within the Iire-box so as t secure a maximum of heating surface'and of transl ference of the heat to the water.

The back-head 12 has at either theirv upper edges with the U-shaped sections 1 and at their lower edges with the U- shaped sections 7. The connecting sheets 21 are connected at their rear ends with the semi-circular extensions 16 on the back-head and at the front ends with the throat sheet 3. At each side of the fire-box aseries of "watentubes 22 are ends sn'aged provided having their down and welded 1n holes passing through the connecting sheets 21. As
