To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RANDOLPH E. BARRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evergreen, in the county of Conecuh and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Twisting Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool which is used for securing a wire around a package such as a bale and theprincipal object of the invention is to provide the tool with improved means for holding and twisting the wire and for cutting the wire before twisting the ends of the cut piece together to hold the wire about the bale.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that a wire may be drawn from a spool and carried around a bale and after one end has been connected with the improved tool, the wire may be grasped by a second gripping jaw and held while being cutofl.
Another object of the invention is to provide the tool with an improved type' of head with which the gripping pawls or jaws are connected.-
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved manner of mounting the cutting device which forms part of this invention.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved tool; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but looking at the opposite side of the tool with the head .shown in section; F ig. 3 is a side view of the improved tool; F g. 4 is an end view of the improved tool.
The body portion 10 ofthis tool is provided with a reduced neck 11 which terminates in an enlarged head 12 having a diagonal slot 13 formed therein and communieating with a housing 14 formed in the head 12. This slot also communicates with an inlet opening or mouth 15 provided to permit one end of a wire to be passed into the housing 14 where it mav be engaged by the pawl 16. This pawl 16 is pivotally mounted by means of the pin 17 and is normally held in an operative position by means of the spring 18 mounted as shown in Fig. 2 with one end positioned in the seat or pocket 19 of the pawl 16 and the opposite end mounted in the seat or pocket 20 of the head 12. A double-faced jaw 21 fits upon the neck 11 and is secured to'the same by means of the rivets 22 and extends beyond the neck as shown at 23 in Figs. 1 and 2 to provide a cutting edge 24, the object of which will be hereinafter brought out. A second jaw 25 which is similar in construction to the jaw 16 is pivotally mounted upon the pin 26 and is normally held in an operative position by a spring 27 having its end portions mounted in the pockets 28 and 29 of the pawl 25 and head 12. r
A handle 30 is secured to the body portion 10 by means of the screws 31 and has one arm shorter than the second arm as shown in Fig. 3, thus leaving space upon the body portion 10 to permit the cutting tool move into operative relation to the cutting edge 24 of the jaw 21 when the handle 35 is moved toward the body portion 10 and thus cause a wire to be cut.
After a. wire has been unrolled from the reel or spool it is passed around the bale or other package which it is desired to secure and the end of the wire is passed through the mouth and inlet opening 15 and passed between the jaws 16 and 21. The wire is then drawn as tight as possible and passed through the slot 13 and between the jaws 21 and 25. When this is done, the wire will be held tightly around the bale with the wire passing along the side extension 23 of the jaw 21 between the cutting edge 24 and the cutting tooth 37. The handle 35 is new pressed toward the body portion10 and this will move the tooth 37 to an operative position with respect to the cutting edge 24, thus cutting the wire. The tool can now be turned and this will cause the wire to be twisted and securely held about the package. After the ends of the wire have been twisted together the pawls 16 and 25 can be moved to an operative position against the tension of the springs 18 and 27, thus releasing the ends of the wire and permitting the tool to be withdrawn.
I have therefore provided a device for securing a wire around a bale or other package, the device being so constructed that the wire can be drawn tightly into place and then cut and twisted.
What is claimed is 1. A tool of the character described comprising a body portion having a head at one end provided with an inlet opening communicating with a housing formed in said head and with a diagonal slot extending from said inlet opening across said head, a doublefaced jaw secured to said body portion and extending into the housing of said head and having its outer end portion extending beyond one side of the body portion to provide a cutting edge, jaws pivotally connected with said head within said housing upon opposite sides of said jaw, means yieldably holding said last-mentioned jaws in an operative position, cutting means carried by said body portion and adapted to move into operative relation with respect to the cutting edge of said first-mentioned jaw, and means for yieldably holding said cutting means in an inoperative position.

A tool of the character described comprising a body portion having a head provided with an inlet opening communicating with a housing formed therein and with a slot communicating with the housing, a sta tionary jaw carried by said body portion and extending into said housing, movable jaws connected with said head and yieldably held in an operative position with respect to said stationary jaw, the outer end portion of said stationary jaw bein provided with a cutting edge, and mova 1e cutting means carried by said body portion and adapted to move into operative relation to the cutting edge of said stationary jaw, and means for yieldably holding said cutting means in an inoperative position.
3. A tool of the character described com prising a body portion, a head having a housing formed therein and provided with an inlet opening communicating with said housing and with a slot communicating therewith, a stationary jaw extending into said housing, and movable jaws mounted in said housing upon opposite sides of the inner end portion of said stationary jaw and yieldably held in operative relation to said stationary jaw.

A tool of the character described comprising a body portion, a stationary jaw carried by said body portion and having its rear end portion provided with a cutting edge, movable jaws carried by said body portion upon opposite sides of said stationary jaw and yieldably held in operative relation to said stationary jaw, and movable cutting means carried by said body portion and adapted to move into OPGIfliTlWi relation to the cutting edge of said stationary jaw.
5. A tool-of the character described comprising a body portion, a handle carried by said body portion and extending upon opposite sides thereof with one arm of less length than its second arm to provide a seat upon said body portion, a stationary jaw carried by said body portion and provided upon opposite faces with gripping teeth, movable jaws carried by said body portion and having their gripping faces provided with teeth, means for yieldably holdingsaid movable jaws in operative relation to said stationary jaw, said stationary jaw being provided with a cutting edge, and cutting means mombly connected with the seat of said body portion and adapted to be moved into operative relation to the connecting edge of said stationary jaw.
