Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 5, 1915. Serial No. 43,823.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mrs. Nn'rTIn MAY SUTGLIFFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sunshade- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sunshade holders and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a holder adapted to be applied to the body of a wearer and which is provided with means for adjustably supporting a sunshade in order that the shade may be properly positioned over the head and body of the wearer. With this object in view the holder includes a rod having angularly disposed ends. A fitting is adjustably mounted upon the upper portion of the rod and is provided with ratchet-teeth. A socket member is pivotally mounted upon the said fitting and carries a spring pressed collar having lugs adapted to engage in the spaces between the teeth of the fitting. A set nut is provided upon the collar for holding the same in a fixed position with relation to the socket member. The said socket member is provided with another set screw adapted to engage the shaft of a shade whereby the shade may be held in position in the socket member.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side view of the holder with part in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
The shade holder includes a rod 19 having angularly disposed end portions. The up permost end of the rod is provided with a socket 20, and a set screw 21. A fitting 22 is mounted upon the upper end portion of the rod 19 and is provided with a set screw 23 which holds the said fitting at an adjusted position upon the said rod. Dentate segments 24 are mounted upon the fitting 22 and a socket member 25 is pivoted be tween the segments 24. A collar 26 is slidably mounted upon the socket member 25 and is provided with lugs 27, adapted to engage in the spaces between the teeth of the dentate segments 24. A nut 28 is screw-- threaded upon the socket member 25 and engages the collar 26 whereby the lugs 27 are held in engagement with the teeth of the segments 24. A coil spring 29 surrounds vopiea of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
the lower portion of the socket member 25 and bears at its lower end upon the pivot which connects the socket member 25 with the segments 24 and at its upper end bears against the lower edge of the collar 26. The spring 29 is under tension with a tendency to lift the lugs 27 above the upper ends of the teeth of the segments 24 when the nut 28 is moved in an upward direction on the socket member 25. The socket member 25 may receive the end of the stafl of a sunshade (not' shown).
By loosening the set screw 28 the collar 26 is moved in an upward direction under the influence of the spring 29 whereby the lugs 27 are carried above the teeth of the segments 24. hen the socket member 25 has been thus released from the segments 24, it may be swung in a forward or rearward direction and when the shade is at a desired position, the collar 26 is moved in a downward direction against the tension of the spring 29 so that the lugs 27 engage between the teeth of the segments 24 and the set screw 28 is then tight whereby the parts are held in the adjusted positions.
From the above description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that a shade support of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same is susceptible of a number of adjustments in order to properly position the shade at desired points.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A shade holder comprising a rod, a fitting mounted on the rod and having a dentate segment, a socket member pivotally connected with the segment and adapted to support a shade, a collar movably mounted in the socket member and having a lug adapted to engage the teeth of the segment, a spring located in the socket member and bearing at one end against a fixed part and at its other end against the collar and means mounted upon the socket member for holding the lug of the collar in engagement with the teeth of the segment.
