To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, ALFRED A.. JANnnr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montgomery, in the county of Mono gomery and State of Alabama, have invent' ed an Improvement in Radiating Fire- Boxes for Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to o-pen lire places for dwellings and'other buildings, and more particularly to a box so constructed as to device of this character which is designed to be placed in the ordinary open fire place without the necessity of changing the construction thereof.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, some of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, are shown in the accompanying drawings; but it is to be expressly understood that the particular constructions shown in the drawings are used merely to facilitate the description of the invention as a whole, and not for defining the limits thereof, reference being had to the appended claims for this purpose.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a preferred form of lire box, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 2, showing the same applied to a lire place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fire box shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the sections of thel box. Fig. L1 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form` of the invention. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another modification of the invention, and Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view taken 0n the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 the-rof, the numeral 10 indicates an open lire place of usual construction formed in the wall of a room and having the hearth 11 in the bottom thereof.
The box which comprises the essential feature of this invention includes a. plurality of superimposed metallic sections 12 substantially of U-shaped formation, as shown in Fig. 8.
The rear fire wall 13, formed by the sections 12, is inclined upwardly, for a portion of its height, toward the front of the lire place whereby the heat from the lire in the grate over the hearth 11 isrthrown toward the front of the re place. The lowermost section 12 which rests upon the hearth 11 has detachably connected thereto at each side thereof the fresh air inlet pipes 14 which extend upwardly through the bottom of the fire place and hearth 11. The top wall of the lowermost section is provided with the U-shaped opening 15 having the upstanding flange 16 arranged along the edges thereof.
The next succeeding superimposed section of the box is provided in the bottom thereof with an openin 16 similar to the opening 15 and of su cient size to permit the insertion of the flange 16 thereinto so as to prevent relative movement'between the sections. The top of the second section is also provided with a flanged opening 15 similar to the one formed in the top of the lowermost section, the flange 16 of the second section being adapted to engage an opening 16 formed in the bottom of the next superimposed section. Similarly the top of the third section is provided with a flanged opening 15 for engagement with an opening 16 formed in the top 17 of the box. It will thus be seen that fresh air entering the lowermost section 12 through the pipes ll will pass upwardly through the openings l5 in the different sections and will be thoroughly heated by the heat radiating from the walls of the different sections of the box.
The top 17 of the box is provided toward the front thereof with suitable partition walls 18 to form a flue, the rear wall of which forms a continuation of the fire walls 13 of the different 'sections 12, said flue communicating with the chimney opening 1S to permit of the escape of the products of combustion. The top of the section 17, rearwardly of the flue therein, is provided with a hollow projection 19 in which is mounted an outlet pipe 19 connected to one end of a discharge pipe 19 having a lateral opening 20 which communicates with an outlet 20 formed in the wall of the room. The heated air will, therefore, pass up through the dierent sections into the outi let pipe 19 and thence through the register into the same room, or room above.
Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5, it will be seen that the box is of the same U-shaped formation, the lowermost compartment having the fresh air inlet pipes 14 leading thereinto. In contradistinction to the construction shown in Fig. 1, however, the box is divided into a plurality of super-imposed compartments 21 formed by the horizontally arranged partitions The lowermost partition 22 is provided on one side thereof with an opening 23 while the next succeeding superimposed partition is provided with a similar opening 23 on the opposite side thereof. It will thus be seen that the openings are arranged in staggered relation and that, therefore, the air entering the inlet pipes 14 will be circulated around the box between the partitions thereof so that it will become thoroughly heated by radiation from the heated walls of the box. The top 17 is also provided with a hollow projection 19 extending from one end thereof and having a. pipe 19 mounted therein.
In Figs. 6 and 7 there is shown another modification of the invention in which the box is of substantially U-shaped formation and has connected to the bottom thereof, the inlet pipes 14 similar to those shown in the other modifications of the invention. In this modification the box is not made in sections nor is it providedwith transverse partitions, thus permitting an unobstructed upward passage of the air from the inlet pipes, said air being heated during its upward course and passing around the walls 18 of the flue and thence through the outlet pipe 19 to the register. 'Ihe fire wall 13 of the box is also inclined upwardly toward the front of the fire place in order to direct the heat outwardly, the rear wall 18 of the flue being in direct alinement with said lire wall.
I claim 1. In combination, an open fire place, a metallic box mounted therein and comprising a plurality of superimposed U-shaped sections, air inlet pipes connected to the bottom of the lowermost section, the top of the latter section being provided with an opening, and a flange surrounding said opening, the next succeeding superimposed section being also provided with an opening for receiving said flange to prevent relative movement between the sections, a top section overhanging the space between the sides of the lower sections and having a flue therein, and an outlet pipe connected to said top section.
