My improvements relate to the class of resonators in which a diaphragm is vibrated bv means actuated by electro-magnetism. as for instance in connection with horns for directing sound warnings. or for analagous purposes. the object being to render the device simple and compact in its construction and arrangement of parts. and to eliminate all but the essential elements, at the same time rendering the device durable and ef 'fect ive.
The invention consists in the novel features described and claimed specifically. a distinctive feature being the utilization of the electro-magnet itself. particularly one member thereof. as a base or foundation plate upon which all-the other parts are mounted and supported. this basic member being dish-shaped, and accon'nnodating between it and the other member of the electro-magnet the electric. coil. and also the condenser when used in conjunction therewith. as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In my concurrent application No. 710.676, tiled July filth-1912. I show a somewhat similar construction of electrt'i-magnet. but in that application I confine myself more particularly to the antisparking means, method of winding. &c., whereas in the present case I seek to cover more particularly the mechanical construction and arrangement. of parts. Of these the more important is the magnetic member It. which to all intents and purposes practically constitutes the base or foundation plate upon which the rest of the structure is built up and supported. Thus closed. the current energizes the magnet B, D. which deflects the armature causing the latter to strike the plunger and transmit the movement to the resilient diaphragm R.
The deflection of the armature A. allows the interrupting spring 1'. to break away from the contact screw 1'. and open the circuit. it being understood that said elements 2'. i. are included in the normal circuit. The opening of the circuit. thus effected. of course cuts oil the current from the coil the members B. D. are thereby demagnetized. and the armature A. is retracted by its spring support (1. carrying the plate 1". back into electrical engagement with the contact 5. and again closing the circuit. when the cycle is repeated so long as the battery circuit is maintained closed by means of the push button or equivalent device This is esentially theoperative method of most devices of this class, a feature of novelty in the present connection being the inclosure of the coil C. within the dish-shaped member B. of the magnet, and between said member and the disk-shaped member D. of said electro-magnet. as shown symbolically in Fig. 2. of the drawings. 'here a condenser is used in conjunction with the coil (7. interposed in the. usual manner in the spark gap. said con denser may be arranged at the side of the coil C or otherwise related thereto. Said condenser is also included between the magnetic members B. D. and like the coil connected up in a manner well known in the art,-my present invention as before intimated not relating especially to the'electric system. but rather the mechanical arrangement of parts.

The horn H. may be mounted on the cap L. which latter atlords the usual resonance chamber 7 in front of the diaphragm R.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that my device is unique in structure in that the magnet itself atlords isolation and support for the coil and condenser. while performing the function ot' a base on which all other parts of the device are mounted either directly or indirectly. Other advantages are. economy of construction: and efticiency of magnetic field. since all parts of the coil are in proximity to the magnetic current. Furthermm'e the armature and the pull thereon. being central. even and uniform action on the transmitting plunger is attained as compared with the use of the old form of two-coil electro-magnet and armature acting on a pin or stud attached directly to the diaphragm.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In an electroanagnetic resonator of the character designated. a two-part electro magnet consisting of a dish-shaped member formed with a central opening and a disk member titted within the dish-shaped memher and having a central projection opposite said opening, said members being arranged in close proximity to each other, an electric exciting coil positioned between them and inclosed by one of said members, a resilient diaphragm supported on the outer peripheral flange of the dish-shaped member, a retractile-armature supported at the rear side of said dish-shaped member and having a portion extending into said opening. and aplunger loosely seated inthe disk member and interposed between said diaphragm and armature for direct engagement with both. i
2. In an electro-magnetic resonator of the character designated. a two-part electromagnet consisting of a dish-shaped member formed with a central opening and a disk member fitted within the dish-shaped memher and having a central pole boss coincident with said opening, an electric exciting coil disposed between said members. a resilient diaphragm supported on the peripheral flang of the dish-shaped member. a retractile armature supported at the rear side of the dish-shaped member and formed with a part disposed opposite said opening. and loosely mounted means directly engageable with said armature and diaphragm.
3. In an electro-magnetic resonator of the character designated. a two-part electromagnet consisting of a dish-shaped member formed with a central opening and a disk member fitted within the dish-shaped member and having a central pole boss coincident with said opening. an electric ex citing coil disposed between said members. a resilient diaphragm supported on the peripheral flange of the dish-shaped member. a retractile armature supported at the rear side of the dish-shaped member and formed with a part disposed opposite said opening, loosely mounted means directly en gageable with said armature and diaphragm. and a current interru1')ter to the rear of said armature.
4. In an electro-imignetic resonator of the character designated, in combination. a two part electro-magnet consisting of a dishshaped member formed with a central opening and a disk member fitting said dishshaped member and formed with a central pole boss coincident with the central aperture in the latter. an electric exciting coil positioned between them. a resilient diaphragm supported on the peripheral flange of said dish-shaped member. a retractile armature supported upon the rear side of said dish-shaped member and formed with a part protruding into the central opening in said dish-shaped member. and means interposed between the resilient diaphragm and the said retractile armature for .transmitting the motion of said armature to said diaphragm. tor the purpose described.
In an electro-magnetic resonator of the character designated. in combination. a two part electro-magnet consisting of a dishshaped member formed with a central opening and a disk member fitting said dish shaped member and formed with a central pole boss coincident with the central aperture in the latter. an electric exciting'coil positioned between them. a resilient diaphragm supported on the peripheral flange of said dish-shaped member. a retractile armature supported upon the rear side of said dish-shaped member and formed with a part protruding into the central opening in said dish-shaped member. a plunger loosely seated in the central boss on said disk member and interposed between the resilient diaphragm and the said Ietractile armature, and current interrupting means also supported on the rear side ofsaid dishshaped member. for the purpose described.

In an electro-magnetic resonator of the character designated. an armature. :1 diaphragm. a two-partelectro-magnet consisting of a dislrshaped member t'orming the base and having an opening therein. and a disk member disposed within said dislrshaped member and having 2 portion extended toward said opening. and forming with the walls of said opening the poles of the magnet and means independent of said armature and diaphragm and movable axially through the disk member for direct contact with said armature and diaphragm.
8. In an clectro-magnetic resonator ol' the character designated. an armature. a diaphragm. a two-part electro-magnct consisting of a dish-shaped member forming the base and having an opening therein. and a disk meinber disposed within said dish-shaped member and having a portion extended toward said opening and forming with the walls of said opening the poles of the magnet. said members being arranged in proximity to each other and a coil surrounding said portion and means: independ- -ent of said armature and diaphragm and movable axiallv through the disk member for direct contact with said armature and diaphragm.
