To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM SAMUEL DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middleton, in the county of Hardeman and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Stamp-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is a case for stamps, tickets and the like, wherein the stamps or tickets are in the form of a strip adapted to be wound upon a roll to be successively drawn from the case and torn off as desired.
While the invention is susceptible as a ticket case, its uses will be hereinafter referred to more particularly as a stamp holder and dispenser.
The invention aims to provide means to conveniently store postage and other stamps, and to facilitate their carriage about the person or in the pocket without liability of having the stamps adhere by the softening or dampening of the mucilage applied thereto. I
A further purpose of'the invention is to provide a device wherein stamps of different denominations may be held in compact form, protected from injury and thereafter fed from the receptacle one at a time without danger of tearing or mutilating the stamps to be used or other stamps in the strip.
The invention contemplates also novel means to facilitate the charging of the re ceptacle by providing removable rollers and clips to engage the roll of stamps, which may be quickly and easily actuated.
Broadly stated, the invention comprises a casing of one piece having removable ends to provide a substantially water proof structure, associated with which are a plurality of rolls mounted within a carrier frame which permits of the ready insertion and removal of a roll, and coiiperating with each roll is a resilient roll engaging clip which maintains the strip of stamps in engagement with the surface of the roll and assists in directing the feed of the stamps from the roll through suitable slots in the casing.
While the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings is now selected as a preferred construction, it is to be understood that the right is reserved Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device disclosing the slidable feature of the stamp control bar for removing the stamps from the individual compartments. Fig. 2 is an end view of the carrier frame showing one roll positioned with its trunnions engaging the side members of the frame, while another roll is forwardly directed to facilitate its removal from the frame. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the casing illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. d is an end view of the device with an end plate removed. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the interior face of the end plate. Referring to the embodiment of the invention disclosed in the accompanying drawings, the casing 1 may be of any suitable material such as metal, celluloid and the like, and is preferably of one piece with the ends brought into juxtaposition as in Fig. Secured to one of the ends is shown an anguiar member 2 which has a depending inwardly directed section 3, said section 3 forming a slot between itself and a part 4 of the casing. One end of the casing may be curved as at 5 in an upward manner, while the other end may be curved as at 6 inwardly toward the end 5, such deflected ends 5, 6 cooperating with a closing bar 7 which is shown wedge-shaped in cross section, which bar 7 is slidably mounted by the lug 8 between the ends 5, 6 to expose the discharge openings to the chambers of the receptacles, indicated at 9 and 10 in Fig. 1. This bar 7 is so mounted between the ends 5 and 6 that it'will form a substantially water proof joint therewith to prevent the ingress of water at that point of the casing. The ends of the casing 1 are shown closed. by removable end members/l1, 12, the end member 12 having an extension 13 provided with an aperture through which the rod 7 passes, and said extension 13 serving to engage the lug 8 to form a stop to the further movement of the rod 7. The other end 11 may be provided with some similar form of stop to limit the movement of the bar, and each of the ends 11, 12 is shown provided with a thumb nut 14: which has a spindle 15 extending through the end, which spindle is provided with a key 16, said spindle being headed or otherwise secured, as by the washer 17, to retain the thumb nut 14 in position. The end members may be secured to the casing 1 by any suitable means. One means is shown in Fig. 7 as a resilient bar 18 having a depending end 19 to engage one of the ends such as 11, while the other depending end 20 with its inturned portion is designed to engage the other member 12. The inturned ends of this bar may engage suitable kerfs or slots in the heads, or any other suitable means to secure the resilient member 18in place.
Removably mounted within the casing l is a carrier frame which is shown comprising a resilient member 21 and a plurality of plates 22, 23 secured to the member 21. The plates 23 are shown positioned parallel to each other, and may be united as at 24 to secure the same in spaced relation to each other. Each of the plates 22, 23 is provided with a substantially central aperture to receive the trunnions 25 of the stamp rolls 26, to serve as journal bearings for said rolls.
The outer plates 22 are secured at 27 to the resilient member 21, and said resilient member permits of the endwise movement of plate 22 to facilitate the insertion or removal of the roll 26 into its respective compartment 9 or 10, as will be clearly understood from an inspectionof Fig. 6, such compartments being formed by the plates 22, 23. It is obvious that any number of these compartments may be formedby using a plurality of the carriers, such as disclosed in Fig, 6, within a casing. The end plates 22 may be provided with guard flanges 28 to protectthe trunnions and to properly space the ends 11 or-12 from the end plates 22. Moreover, the resilient member 21 extends beyond the end plates 22 as at 29, if desired.
The plates 22, 23 may be cut away as at 30 to facilitate the insertion of the carrier frame into the casing 1 and to permit the depending section 3 to rest against the plates 22, 23 and thereby prevent rotative movement of the carrier frame within the casing.
The rolls 26 may be of any suitable material, and as previously stated are provided with the trunnions 25, one of which is slotted as at 31, to be engaged by the key 16 of the thumb nut 14 for thepurpose of rotating he mile 26 i h ir. hamb rs? 91' .lQ-.,...T.*3a =h of the rolls is provided with a suitable device for engaging and retaining a strip, indicated at 32, Fig. 11, and also a strip of stamps or tickets, to retain the strips in engagement with the roll. One form of such device is shown as the key rod 33 which may he slid endwise out of its kerf to permit of the end of the strip 32 and the strip of stamps or tickets to be inserted into the kerf and to be locked therein by the key 33. The strip 32 may be dispensed with, but it is employed to serve as a register for the stamps carried by the roll. The strip 32 is shown divided into a plurality of spaces,
each being numbered consecutively so that as the stamp is removed it will automatically show how many stamps remain upon the roll. For example, the strip is wound with the numeral 1 nearest to the roll and the other numerals progressing toward its free end. The removal of the first stamp, if ten should be on the roll, would expose the numeral 10, whereupon the operator would be given notice that nine. stamps remained upon the roll, without further calculation. Moreover, the strip 32 serves to separate the stamps into layers and thereby prevents the adhesion of one stamp to anotherin layers. The strip of course, may be of any suitable material, such for example as paraffin covered fabric, to prevent the adhering of the gummed material to the strip.
Pivotally mounted between a plurality of plates 22 and 23 is a rollcarrier frame 31, which is shown provided with trunnions 35 which are adapted to extend through suit able apertures in plates 22' and 23 to permit of the pivotal movement of the roll carrying frame with relation to said plates. This frame may be of any preferred form, but for the sake of lightness and economy it is shown in the form of a bent wire. Secured to each frame 34 is a roll clip 36 which is also shown in the drawings as composed of wire, the wire being bent so that one end is secured to the 'frame3 1 near one side thereof, then bent into circular form to surround a roll, is then bent angularly at 37 across the roll with a finger engaging tip 38, andthence back around the roll to permit its other end to be secured to the frame 34;. This roll clip is preferably made of resilient material, and the material is'bent upwardly from the frame 34 as at 39 (Fig. 6),. and this, upwardly bent portion. 39 is adapted to engage the resilient member 21 and operates, when the end plate 22 is moved outwardly, to release the roll truned 9; and. t fi f li ilitlig25-19% re t is th recesses 30 formed in the end plates 22, 23. The frame 34 being pivotally mounted between the plates 22, 23, permits of the roll being moved to a position above the resilient member 21, whereupon the roll may be removed laterally from the clip frame 36, and can then be recharged and reinserted in the clip. The clip frame is shown provided with a resilient retaining finger to which serves to frictionally engage the material Wound upon the rolls to prevent the unwinding of the material. This finger 40, it will be observed, does not extend into contact with the end 37 of the clip, thereby permitting the end of the clip and the strip of stamps to be fed from the roll at the space formed between the end 37 and finger 40, through the slots in the casing 1.
The device is particularly adapted for use by rural mail carriers who are frequently required to sell stamps on their routes. In inclement weather, the stamps, when carried in an ordinary box, are liable to become lost or adhere to each other, causing loss to the carrier. The casing is, therefore, made of a single piece of material with inclosing end members, so that the flanges of said members cover the casing and thereby serve to prevent the ingress of moisture to the interior of the casing to affect the stamps.
To charge the rolls with stamps, the end 11 or 12 is removed from the casing 1, the roll carrying frame is removed from the casing, the end plate 22 moved outwardly permitting the roll and the roll carrying frame 34 to be moved forward toward the bearing, whereupon the roll may be moved sidewise from its roll carrying frame. The strip of stamps may be wound on the roll, being retained thereon by the key 33, and after the roll has been charged by the stamps, the roll may be returned to its carrying frame 3 and placed in position between the plates 22, 23, whereupon the frame may be re turned to the casing and the end replaced. The ends, as previously stated, may be locked to the casing by any suitable means, such as the resilient member 18. Should it be desired to dispense a stamp from one of the compartments, such as compartment 10, which we will assume contains two cent stamps, the bar 7 may be moved to the left by means of the lug 8 to expose a slot in alinement with the roll of stamps, and the turning of the thumb nut 14 will cause a stamp to pass through the slot of compartment '10, whereby the stamp when it has been fully exposed, may be torn off from the strip without iniury to the remaining stamps on the strip. The stops 13 of the end plates prevent the accidental removal of the bar 7 from the casing, and by having the ends of this bar 7 extend beyond the casing, the slots will not be carelessly left uncovered.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a casing, a carrier frame removably mounted in said casing, a roll having an axle for rotative movement in said frame, and means carried by the frame to support said roll for oscillating movement when the axle of said roll is released from engagement With said frame.
2. In a device of the class described, a
casing, a carrier frame having a demountable roll, means to retain the roll in one position within the frame, and means to support the roll in another position exterior of the frame.
3. In a device of the class described, a casing, a removable carrier frame having a demountable roll, and means to support said roll in a plurality of positions with relation to said frame.
a. In a device of the class described, a casing composed of a single sheet of material having its ends brought into juxtaposition to form a slot, removable end members for said casing, and a slidable bar controlling the passage from said casing.
5. In a device of the class described, a casing provided with a discharge slot, a slidable tapered bar fitted within said slot, means to actuate said bar, end members in said casing, and means carried by each of said end members to limit the slidable movement of said bar.
6. In a device of the class described, a casing composed of a single sheet of mate rial formed to have its edges terminate in juxtaposition to produce a discharge slot, a depending member secured to the under face of the material at the slot to extend into the casing substantially parallel with the other end thereof to form a guide passage adjacent the discharge slot, and a dispensing roll mounted in said casing and provided with a material engaging finger to direct the material on said roll into engagement with said depending member and through vthe slot formed by the ends of said casing.
7. In a device of the class described, a casing, a roll carrying frame removably mounted therein, a roll revolubly mounted within said frame and provided with a slotted axle extending through the frame, end members for said casing, each of said end members being provided with a rotatable device having a key adapted to engage the slotted axle of said roll for the purpose of rotating the roll within the frame and casing.
8. In a device of the class described, a frame comprising a plurality of plates united by a resilient member, some of said plates being united in parallel relation, while others of said plates are capable of endwise movement, and dispensing rolls journaled between said plates.
9. In a device of the class described, a frame comprising a resilient member and a plurality of plates secured thereto, a dispensing roll having trunnions adapted to be mounted between said plates, means whereby said rolls may be rotated, and a removable key rod carried by said roll to retain the dispensing material on the roll.
10. In a device of the class described, a casing, a removable frame including a plurality of plates, a dispensing r011 journaled between the plurality of plates of said frame, and a roll carrying frame pivotally mounted between a plurality of said plates, said roll carrying frame having means to engage the surface of said roll.
11. In a device of the class described, a casing, a frame removably mounted therein comprising a resilient member and a plurality of plates secured thereto, a roll carrying frame pivotally mounted between said plates, a roll adapted to be journaled between said plates and to be removably Copies of this patent may be obtained for mounted in means carried by said roll carrying frame, said means comprising an open framework which extends from the roll carrying frame around the surface of the roll for a part of the circumference thereof, and a resilient finger cooperating with said means and also engaging the surface of the roll. 12. In a device of the class described, acasinp; having removable end members, a frame removably mounted therein, said frame embodying a resilient member having a plurality of plates secured thereto, material carrying rolls removably mounted for rotative movement between said plates, and a guard flange on a plate of the frame to engage an end member of the casing to maintain the rolls in operative position within the frame.
