WILLIAM S. TROWBRIDGE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEXV JERSEY.
DRAFT-ARM.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916.
p Y Application led November 29, 1915. Serial No. 63,933.
-. fication.
My invention relates to car underframes, and has particular reference to a novel sillstrengthening device for wooden center sill cars.
y It has been found in practice that cars constructed with wooden center sills are often damaged, due to the weakening or breaking of the center sills ata point contiguous to the body bolster. Many e'ective devices have been suggested with the object in view of overcoming this difficulty, the present improvement, however, relating `to, a modification in which rolled metal, shapes are utilized to 'a large extent, tothe end that the costof construction may be cheapened and a construction provided in which the effective resistance is secured in metal having the desired characteristics.
It is well understood that at points likely to receive shocks and blows a cast metal of massive form is most e'ective, but that a construction including rolled metal beams isbetter adapted to resist bending strains without breaking. To this end the draft arm 'of my invention comprises a construcs tion including cast and rolled shapes, all riveted together to form a substantially integral structure.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 41 is la side elevation of a draft arm constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2' is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig.
'2, and Fig., 4 is a sectionv on the line 44. f Fig. 2.' i
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that I have indicated, in Figs. 1 and 2, the sills in dotted lines. The end sill is indicated at 11, and a`sub-sill at 12. Extending alongside the center sills and rigidly secured thereto by'suitable bolts, are rolled metal beams in the form of bulb angles, these beams having a vertical web 13, and a horizontal web 14, the vertical web terminating t in a bulb 15. These beams extend from the end sill 11 to a point a Substantial distance to the rear of the body bolster. The body bolster is not shown, but is intended to occupy the space lettered 16 in the drawings.
The beams are united at their forward end by a transverse vertical web 17, at an intermediate point by the plate 18, and a point at the rear ofthe body bolster by a transverse angle19, the vertical leg ofwhich acts as an abutment for the sub-sill 12 and also for the body bolster. The beam is suitably secured to the wooden center sills by means of transverse boltslocated as shown in Fig.
'1. Secured to the horizontal leg of the angles, asbest shown in Figs. 1 and 3, are draft rigging supporting plates 20 and 21 having thereon the usual stops against which the draft rigging followers may abut. To the upper edge of these plates is secured an angle 22, whichunderlies the wooden center sills and may be suitably bolted thereto. as shown by the apertures v23 in Fig. 2. rllhis rolled metal angle, as best shown in Fig. 1, extends forwardly to a polnt outside of the deadwood 24, beingv stepped down, or deflected vertically, to accommodate the end sill 11 and the deadwood.. The lower edges of the plates are likewisestiifened by-a rolled metal angle 25, bent upwardly at the-:forward end into engagement with the end portion of the angle22. The rolled metal shapes are securely riveted to the castings and become in effect an integral part thereof. The rear ends ofthe plates 20, 21 are united by the cross plate 26, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be noted that when the parts are combined as shown and securely riveted together, that a substantially integral structure is produced in which the metal is properly disposed to best withstand the shocks and strains of service.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pair of rolled metal beams of angular cross section and extending rearwardly from the end sill and terminating at the rear of thev body bolster, a pair of cast metaljdraft rigging cheek plates secured to the horizontal flanges of said beams, and a rolled metal angle applied to the upper edge of each of said cheek plates, a horizontal leg of which angleis adapted to underlie a car sill, substantially as described.
' sill and a buffer block,
2. Ina device of the class described, the combination of a pair of rolled metalbeams of bulb angle cross section and adapted to lie alongside the longitudinal wooden sills of a car, means "uniting said beams to each other, and a pair of draft gear supporting plates rigidly united to said beams through the horizontal flanges of the latter, and angular rolled metal shapes secured to the upper portions of said plates7 the forward ends of said rolled metal shapes being stepped down to provide a seat for an end substantially'. as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pair of longitudinally eX- tending rolled metal beams of bulb angle shape, a vertical web uniting said beams at Copies ofthls patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the their forward ends, anda horizontal web unlting the same at a point near their rear end, a pair of cast metal-draft gear supporting plates rigidly secured to said beams through the horizontal flanges of the eastings and beams, and rolled metal anglesV secured to the upper and lower edges of said castings, the upper 0f said angles providing a horizontal flange adapted to lie beneath a wooden center sill, thel forward ends of said u per angles providing a seat for a ear end)sill, substantially as described. f
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 22d day of November, 1915.
