INVENTOR) 1 ALFBED`RALPH JOHNSON, 0F GLOVERSVILLE.'NEWv YORK.
GAS-COCK.
l Application filed June 22. 1915. Serial No. 35.586
-To lll who-1n 'it may concern Be it knownvthat I. ALFRED RALPH Jouxsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and S- State of Ne York, have iuventeda new and useful Gas-Cock,`of'which the following is a' specification.
This invention relates to improvements inv gas cocks, andthe obJect 1s to provlde a locking means for lthe same which will render impossible the accidental opening of the cock, after being `shut. off. thus preventing the escape of the non-ignited 'gasthe said means also'acting as a lock for the turning plug of the cock in open position to maintain a steady, full ow of gas to the burner, and to provide against the accidental cutting oli of the gas supplv when it is desired to leaveithe saine in'full How. To accomplish these' results a simple means is applied to the stem of the turning plug of any ordinary gascock, said means being almost conipletely `housed within a slot or recesspro vided in the stem, land having no projecting parts to be accidentally caught by the sleeve or otherwise to-cause the opening or closing of thefcock, it being only necessary in order to move the plug from an open ora closed position, to press' the -upper end of the locking meansby the thumb while the fingers of the. same hand*Y graspl the usual turning handle of the gas cock.
A full? and complete. understanding of the vinvention may be obtained fromfa careful consideration ofthe following detailed description, taken in conjunctionwith the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification; itv being understood that whilethe drawing shows a practical form of the invention, the latter is not confined to strict conformity therewith, but may be changed or modified, as long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the-salientfeatures of the invention, as specifically pointed out in the claim heretoappended.4
In thek drawing, y characters designate'corresponding parts in each Lof the severalgures, Figure 1 is a perspective view `of ay gas cock of the ordinary type, having my improved lock applied thereto. Fig. 2is a* vertical longitudinal sectional view V.ofthe same. Fig. 3 is avertical sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isa horizontal sectional View on the line elf-f4, Fg.fp2.
Specification of Iietters Patent.
in which like reference y v Patented May 2,1916.
The usual vertically disposed tubular casmg 1 has a tapered longitudinal bore 2 in whlch 1 s seated the valve plug 3 of the ordinary construction. and adapted to be mainvalves of this type. In addition tothis, the tubular casing( is provided withthe oppositelyk disposed integral nipples 8 and 91arranged intermediate the top and bottom of the'caslng 1 and forming inlet and outletfopenings respectively which, as is customary, may bel connected with any suitable source of gas` i supply on the one side and any style of gas burner on` the other, the usual yhorizontal bore l0 being provided through the turning plug 3 in a position to register with? the bores, provided in the' nipples 8 and 9,-*in order toprovide an uninterrupted passage-y way through the sainer whenv the plug is turned to an open position, orto be entirely i out ofi' when the plugis given a one-quarter turn in the usual manner. The tubular casing is providedat its top edge with a cutaway portion l11 extending preferably,
though not necessarily, from a point directlyv over the longitudinal central line of the inlet .nipple 8 around to oneside a distance equal to ninety degrees, and provided at its terminals withseats or ldepressions 12 and13 which are slightly deeper than the arcuate cut-away portion 11.
The turning plug k3 is provided with the* n usual upstanding stem 14, andthe laterally projecting handleL 15 for turning the plug at right angles to the axis of the laterally projecting handle 15; a slot 16, extending from topy of the stem to a point considerably below the. top' edge of the casing'2. The
slot I6 is formed intermediate itsends with a counterbore 1'?, 4which is of a, somewhat larger diameter than the width of said slot and extends from theouterface ofthe stem 14 to a point slightly beyond the bottom or inner wall of the slot. A locking lever 18 .from a closed to an open positlon, .or vice .y versa, and said stern k15 has formed therein.v
is adapted to lit the slot 16 and conforms approximately, on its outer edge, to the contour of the stem 14, and on its opposite or inner edge with the inner wall of the slot and is formed of suitable metal of a thickness slightly less than the width of the slot. The lever 18 is provided at its lower: end with an inwardly extending eye 19, through which passes a pin 20 which pivots the lever within the stem 14, and said lever is further provided at its lower extremity with an outwardly extending lug or nose 21, which is adapted to enter one or the other of the depressed seats 12 and 13 during the operation of opening or closing the valve. In order to insure the positive entering of the seats by the lug 21, a coiled spring 22 is introduced into the counterbore 17, said spring having oneend bearing against the end wall of the counterbore and the other end entering a recess 23 formed in the inner or rear edge of the lever 1S and acting to maintain,
at all times. an outward lpressure upon the lever and a consequent downward tendency to the lug 21. By this construction it is impossible to dislodge the spring 22 from its proper position.
Assuming that the gas cock is in its closed by releasingthe handle the spring 22 forces the lug into the opposite seat 13 and the device is locked in the open position. The same operation, as will be seen, takes place in the opposite movement of the handle. Then the lever is forced outwardly by the spring, it extends but slightly beyond the edges of the slot and thus there .is little lYhile the device of the present invention has been shown and described as applied to a gas cool; of an ordinary construction, it will be understood that the same is capable ofuse in controlling the plugs of valves for other purposes.
What is claimed is ln combination with a casing, a turning plug, a stem provided on the plug-in aline ment therewith and projecting from the casing and having an operating handle, a slot formed longitudinally in the stem from the casing to the outer end thereof at right angles to the handle. a'locking lever exteriorly conforming to the Icontour of the stem and extending within the slot and pivotally mounted at its inner end adjacent to the casing, a spring for exerting an outward pressure on the lever to cause to project partially from the slot, said spring being applied beyond the pivotal point, said lever having an outstanding lug adjacent its pivot, a cut-away portion provided on the adjacent end of the casing and extending around a portion of the circumference thereof, said cut-away portion terminating at each. end in locking seats,'said seats being adapted to be entered by the outstanding lug on the lever to lock lthe same, together with the valve plug, in open or closed position, said lug serving to limit the 'movement of the turning plug in either direction.
In testimony, that l claim the. foregoing as my own, 1 have hereto affixed my s1gna ture in the presence of two witnesses.
' ALFRED RALPH JOHNSON.
