Application filed August 12. 1915.
lie it known that 1. Jon); \Y. l1:ot"ru.\N.a eitixen of the t'nited States. residing at ladueah. in the eountv of )leCraeken and State of l\'entuel\' v. have invented new and useful lmprovements in tarousels. of whieh the following is a speeilieation.
The invention relates to a earousel. and more partieularlv to the elass of undulating roundabouts.
The primary objeet of the invention is the provision of a roundabout wherein the *ars or earriers simulate boats \vhieh have the merry-gt)-round eharaeteristie. and when traveling have undulating motion. thereby giving pl asure to the use and rendering it attraetive.
Another objeet of the invention is the provision of a roundabout of this eharaeter wherein the eonstruetion is novel in form to assure the perfect working thereof and safety to the users.
A further objeet of the invention is the provision of a roundabout of this eharaeter whieh is simple in eonstruetion. reliable and etlieient in operation. strong. durable. and inexpensive in manufacture.
'ith these and other objeets in view, the invention eonsists in the eonstruetion. combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter full v .deseribed. illustrated in the aeeompanving drawings. and pointed out in the ela'ims hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-l igure l is a side eh vation of a roundabout eonstrueted in aeeordanee with the invention. Fig. 2 is fragmentarv top plan view thereof. Fig. is a vertieal longitudinal seetional view. Fig. l is an enlarged side elevation of one of the ear-riers or ears. Fig. 5 is a seetional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. (3 is a seetional view on the line t3(3 of Fig. 5.
Similar referent-e eharaeters indieate eor responding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail. the roundabout eomprises a pluralitv of foundation timbers or beams 10. \\'lll('l] are eonneeted at their inner ends to a renter bed plate 11. the timbers or l aims being extended radially therefrom. and in this plate 11 is journaled a vertieal shaft 1;. \vhieh is also journaled in a boxing l spat-ed a distanee i above the plate ll. and is formed with downwardlv divergent braees l-l \Yllit'll at their lewer ends are fixed to the foundation tnn Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 45.171.
bers or beams I and in this manner the said shaft 1; is rotatablv supported in perpendieular position. Supported upon the tim bers or b 'ams ll) of the foundation eoneeir trieallv with respeet to the shaft 12 are series of trestles 13 of varying heights with respeet to eat-h other and arranged at intervals in a eirele and radially to the same. lhese trestles 13 form a support for a eireular undulating traek it) upon \vhieh travel the wheels 17. preferably rubber tired. of ears or (illriers l8. ttlt'll simulating a boat. and have arranged therein seats for aeeommodating passengers. Fixed to the-shaft l! are upper and lower disks 15) and 20. respeetivelv. to the former of whieh are seeured a pluralitv of radial arms 21 supporting a top or eanopv frame 22 from whieh depend at intervals hanger rods 23 supporting a eireular plat: form 24 and a guard rail 25, the platform being designed for use by an attendant for eolleeting fares or tiekets from the passen gers in the -arriers or ears during the rota tion of the roundabout.
Extending radiall from the lower disk and ('onneeted thereto through the medium of universal joints 23 are sweep arms Lti. the same being also eonneeted through the medium of bolts 27 with forks 2h liXed to the bottoms of the carriers 18. while seem'ed to the disk 30 nearthe peripherv thereof and at opposite sides of the'sweep arms 2 are substantially V-shaped braekets having e ve terminals ll) in whirh are loosely engaged the inner hook ends ii of pull rods 212. whieh have their outer book ends ill loosel engaged in eves l-l at the outer free ends of the sweep arms i so as to braee the latter during the rotation of the roundabout.
Fixed to the shaft 1; eontiguous to the bet plate 11 is a beveled gear 21.3 whieh meshe with a pinion Zlti fixed on a driving shaft 33 suitabl v journaled upon one of the timbers or beams i and is adapted for eonneetion in an v suitable manner with a driving lilo tor or power transmitting meehanism for operating the roundabout.
(onneeted with the respeelive forks 2* are safet) ehains whieh sustain the ears or earriers l at equal distanees apart during the travel thereof on the trat'k. it will be noted-that the ars or earriers are permitted to follow the eurvatures of the traek b rea son of the Ilexible eonneetion therebv not in any way interfering with the undulating ltatented Ma1v2.ttitti. I l
- nals arranged between the disks for slidable movement in the guidewavs and also for free vertical swinging movement. wheeled carriers movable over the track and having connection with the sweep arms. a top fixed to the shaft for rotation therewith, and a circular platform suspended from thetop.
2.111 a carousel, a foundation, a vertical shaftcentralljv of the foundation, a circular undulating track on the foundation and concentricallv of the shaft, spaced disks fixed to the shaft, sweep arms having slidable and vertically swinging connections between the disks, wheeled carriers movable over the track and having connection with the sweep arms, a top fixed to the shaft for rotation therewith, a circular platform suspended from the top, and brace rods loosely connected with the disks and with the outer ends of the sweep arms.
I"). In a carousel, a foundation, a vertical shaft centrally of the foundation, a circular undulating track on the foundation and concentl'itall of the shaft, spaced disks fixed to the shaft. sweep arms having slidable and vertically swinging connections between the disks, wheeled carriers movable over the track and having: connection with the sweep arms, a top fixed to the shaft for rotation therewith. a circular platform suspended from the top, brace rods loosely connected with the disks and with the outer ends of the sweep arms, chain connections between the carriers. and means for rotating the shaft. 7
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
